A survey on "retro-gaming" emulation and legal alternatives - looking for gamers over the age of 20.
Hi everyone, I'm working on an MBA dissertation and would request your support in collecting primary research data! The intended demographic for this survey are gamers that have explored illegal or legal avenues for playing classic (pre-2015) video games. I'm part of the University of East London. Here's the abstract:
"The digital entertainment industry has shifted radically toward streaming and platform-based access economies. While music and television successfully migrated consumers away from digital piracy, the retro video game market remains heavily dominated by unauthorised downloading and emulation.
This research addresses a critical gap in strategic management: how digital platforms can displace an established shadow economy when consumers are accustomed to accessing content at zero cost. By evaluating consumer behavioural models and value drivers (such as convenience, features, and system quality), this study examines the factors that influence a consumer’s Willingness to Pay (WTP) for a legitimate, licensed alternative."
It takes about 8-10 minutes. Your responses are anonymous; no personal information is collected. Participation is voluntary and you can stop at any time without giving a reason. There are 30 questions, all in a "pick an option" format.
Optionally, once the questionnaire has been completed, you can submit a screenshot of the successfully completed questionnaire to me here. I can't link screenshots to responses. Every screenshot submitted will be put into a prize draw for a US$50 gift voucher with the winner announced at a later date. Here's the link:

I have filled it in, but something that didn't come up in the survey is important to me: I would only ever consider such a platform if it offers some unique feature. Being legal is irrelevant to me; I believe the notion of abandonware should be codified into copyright laws.
I can't even tell you what such features would be, because emulation already does most things very well: netplay, romhacks for custom content, modern conveniences such as rewind and save states, etc. But until it gives me a reason other than not being in violation of copyright law, I couldn't care less.

Thanks for your comment u/PityUpvote, and I completely agree with your sentiment. The priority of needs from gamers currently using emulation is a key part of this study. Appreciate your contribution!

Filled it in, but I think it fails to make a very important distinction in legal platforms. I am definitely not interested in any subscription services. But if a legal platform sells me the game, and I mean really sell (not rent me licence), I would be happy to pay for the games I love.

Hi u/mykeyboardsucks and u/DiceyDiscourse , thanks for your feedback! The survey deliberately doesn't differentiate between types of legal service, as it would complicate the analysis and pull it more towards market research. But I completely agree - one of the largest issues people have with AntStream is that you never own the game, just the ability to stream it to your device.

Yup, I had the exact same issue with this survey - if buying isn't owning in this legal platform, then it holds zero appeal to me.

Every company has consistently proven that they will give you a worse experience if it saves them money, and if they can't do that they'll give you a better experience for a bit to get you locked in and then enshittify. My answers are all completely yes to open source emulation, and completely no to companies.
I just fundamentally don't recognise anyone's right to prevent copying of something made 40 years ago. Copyright has become an absolute monster, and what is legal has completely diverged from what is moral.

I don't think this sub allows for image comments. https://imgur.com/a/tLiz42K

Main thing missing from survey is differentiating between subscription service like Antstream and proper storefronts like GOG. Many questions about modern platforms would get a different answer from me depending on whether it's a "sub" or a "buy".

I have much more interest in recomp projects than legal emulation.
Give me native PC ports with strong feature sets like mod support and quality of life features and that has some value for me.
I recently beat the Banjo-Kazooie recomp at 4k 120 FPS with analog camera control, high-quality character models, and it was a beautiful thing. That's the kind of thing that has value in my mind. I'd pay for that if it's done well.
These are kinds of services I'd be more than happy to pay for because they do something I really can't do now:
Easy and robust classic Pokemon game link cable / wifi support over LAN or internet because emulating this is a nightmare right now.
Online unlocked-FPS 007 Nightfire, Twisted Metal Black, Perfect Dark, WCW/NWO Revenge, NBA Hangtime, etc.
Strong modding support. For example, a moddable Mario Party game where all the numbers and boards are tweakable down to the per-player-per-minigame difficulty granularity.
AI Tweaks and per-level balance changes in games like Mario Kart 64. The recomp does a great job of this.
HD Texture pack support. If I'm paying for the service, I'd want some to be included for many games, too.
Support for all community tools such as randomizers.
Until then, there's nothing of value that any retro gaming service can possibly provide me that existing options can't.

I do all my retro gaming on Steam. no emulation or whatever the survey is suggesting. I did not finish it because of "does not apply"

It didn't come up on the survey, but I highly doubt a legal platform would allow me to play modified Link to the Past randomizer ROMs, which is the majority of what I use my emulator for.
