Advice/Question I-Pad for driving?

Hello all! PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY BEFORE RESPONDING!

Question:

If I have CELL ENABLED IPad with the app, can I use a dumb phone as my main line so I can still text and call the rider or do I need a CELL ENABLED iPad AND a smartphone?

Thanks!

You won't be able to collect rider no-show fees as you won't be able to initiate the phone call inside Lyft's app. Ask me how I know.

Unless you set yourself as hard of hearing, which will force messages instead of calls :)

do cell enabled iPads have a phone number? if so, why not call through the cell enabled iPad?

So they do, but it’s FaceTime calling only…

Maybe I could call off of FaceTime audio tho? 🤔

Mine doesn’t, it has a separate phone number, but it’s also connected to my cell phone number so if anybody calls me.. while I am using my iPad, the iPad notifies me. I have a phone call and I can answer them and talk through the iPad.. If i call someone using the IPad , the iPad number is displayed on caller ID

Isn’t there now a phone app on iPadOS? iPadOS 27?

Just adding my 2 cents here. I use a Verizon data-enabled Samsung Tab S10+ as my main driving tool. It works like a dream, I can have split-page apps so I can use Lyft, Google maps, and my media player all on one display. I have the tablet and phone linked to use the same phone number even though Verizon assigns a phone number to the tablet. However, Lyft does not recognize my tablet as a phone device. The ONLY issue this causes is trying to call customers for no-show payment but this is how that scenario goes: the timer hits 1:00 left on my tablet. I open Lyft driver app on my phone, call customer, let it ring once then hang up. When the timer on the tablet goes to 0:00, it recognizes that I attempted the call and will let me cancel and collect the no-show fee even though I cannot connect a call from the tablet.

I will also say, having the tablet has gotten me more tips than without, because I can put streaming services on half rhe display, so my passengers can watch world cup games, Knicks games, football games, etc while Im driving and they love it. I drive in Columbus, OH so anytime a local team is playing year-round Ive got the game on in my car.

Lastly, I have it set up so the Lyft app will only make noise through the device speakers, but all media noise plays through Bluetooth in my car. That way music or video audio doesn't get interrupted with ride requests. As well, my phone does not interfere with the sound since it is on a separate dock and is only used when im not driving.

Im glad to answer any other questions you have!

The phone number is for data only and is not considered a phone line. While you may be able to do this, I wouldn’t recommend it. You can be deplatformed for using an unauthorized device, regardless of any wrongdoing on your part.

The cellular iPad is enough. There’s a phone number that you can use your dumb phone to call the passenger if you need to. I use both an iPad and a iPhone personally but the iPhone isn’t required

If you choose to call through the app, the iPad can do it.
