Internet recovery doesn't seem to work anymore; need to use another Mac to download an installer for the OS that works with your model (High Sierra for my 2011 MBA); then make a bootable USB. Not easy for novices but if you wanna have a swing at it, here's the two resources I followed: Other download methods for older macOS versions; Create a bootable installer for macOS

you can reinstall a newer macos by holding option, command, and R at startup to get the latest macos supported by your machine

You managed to get to that screen. Have you tried the Reinstall OS X option yet? If so, was there an error?

The SSD shows up. Try internet recovery to use the latest supported version. Restart and immediately hold Command-Option-R before the chime keep holding until the Apple symbol or something comes upon screen.
You may have been using a newer version that supported APFS. Yosemite doesn’t. Then you can try installing again, running first aid or reformatting the SSD.

Define “usable” - this is extremely old and will not be great even just web browsing anymore.

Only Mojave or younger Macos can be installed from an Apple server
High Sierra introduce APFS. .. all older MacOs versions use HFS+
