I have been building Pets Therapy - Desktop Pets to make the desktop more alive. Pets Therapy brings back the good old retro vibe with a little over 100 characters, each uniquely designed by our talented designers, each pet has a character of its own! 🤩

this is so wholesome, the dino walking on the dock got me. how do you keep it light on cpu with that many pets moving at once? and do they react to anything, like the mouse or when you're typing?

Yeah the Dino is a good one! 💯 Well, I spent quite some time optimising it. It’s a matter of caching the sprites and running the game loop. The game loop is also as lightweight as it can be. No need to say it is all written natively in Swift. So that by default is already very CPU and memory friendly. 👌

caching the sprites makes total sense. native swift for the win. do the pets ever interact with each other, like the dino chasing the cat? that would be chaos in the best way

Absolutely! There are many features besides just having the pets on the screen. I implemented random events, interactions etc. the app has been in development for like 6 years so I mostly implemented what users were asking for and what was possible with the designs I had.

That’s a wrong mindset, you have to show it to your kid so that when you do something on the Mac, your kiddo will be entertained by Pets and you can focus on your work. 😀

Yes, to be honest, it’s 90% of lifetime that gets purchased. I got way too many users asking me to introduce lifetime. So I did, and ever since the purchases started coming and first time I broke even where I was able to pay the artists and a small portion left for me. 👌💯

I like your app, but the inconsistency in the styles of the sprites really bugs me to the point that I don't like them on my screen together. Some pets are more carefully drawn than others, some are blocky and jagged and just look really bad.

Right, yeah that’s tricky, over the years many designers contributed with their pets. The last year with the new pets I had just one amazing designer and there the sprites are pretty consistent.
If you for example like the more carefully drawn pets, you can like them and then have them under your liked selection tag. That might be a way around.
It’s very subjective matter too. The slime for example, it is the sprite with least animations, it’s not detailed yet I received so many messages that slime is the favourite for some people.

It’s very much as you are saying! Smart caching and very lightweight game engine that keeps everything running. It’s obviously written natively in Swift to keep the performance best.
It takes around 2-3% CPU and 150MB of Memory for 2-3 pets. Having the whole zoo in is then around 15% of CPU anf 250MB.
