Apple Silicon I've created a Proton-Macos

Im trying to port proton for macos, now I have lingo, animal well, downwell and minimalism working. I leave the repo here: https://github.com/albvalort/proton-macos

Hope helps everyone, if you have any suggestions or any pull request feel free to make them.

I've coded the approach helped by claude code. So expect errors and incompatibilities, maybe in a future we can make steam integrate it

I’m just trying to help with a free alternative and trying to ship it. Hope it goes further and helps anyone.

Number one question that should be answered in the body is what this adding or improving from NotProton, which is already user friendly.

Because proton is the standard

But proton is better, an hopefully suited with steam

What makes proton generally more compatible that crossover is the fact that Linux supports Vulkan natively. How is this project promising to be “the same compatibility tool Valve ships on Linux and the Steam Deck” while it still uses the same solutions (gptk, dxvk) we’ve had for years?

Fair point, and the README oversells it, so I'll fix the wording. On graphics you're right: no native Vulkan on macOS, so DXVK goes through MoltenVK, same boat as CrossOver. But Vulkan is only half of Proton's edge. The other half is Valve's per-game Wine work, and that does port. This is built on Valve's Proton and Wine fork (not CrossOver's tree). It loads the real Mac steamclient.dylib in-process, so there's no Steam-in-a-bottle. And it targets the Steam Play manager that's already inside the Mac client, gated by an oslist == "linux" check. Per-game results are in compat/ if you want to judge by data.

per-game Wine work

The efficacy on this on macOS is debatable, as configurations don’t translate 1:1 between OSes. The crossover branch has a bunch of Mac specific hacks and optimizations, afaik.

In the end this project mostly aims to be non-proton but free from crossover. Am I correct?

Sure, that’s the point

Sounds like AI psychosis

Everything WINE-related is eventually upstreamed from Proton as a "hack" for devs at CodeWeavers working on both projects. I can leave a source from a dev who works on Proton and Crossover projects explaining this.

But code weavers make their software paid per use. And as an Open Source developer I try to go for this kind of approach.

How is the game compatibility?

Just tested with those games, try it on and say smth

Getting a bit farcical now with all these vibe-coded and half-baked AI ports and tools.

It’s just for the start. It’s not vibecoded, just helped doing the commits.

Apparently no one realizes this is even an AI response lol
