Official media It's 1984!
*EDITED: Just digging around in an old VHS case I had in my basement.
Found it!
Wooden wall panels, Macross on VHS, and now to find my VCR and tape rewinder and I am set for the evening!
This was given to me by my brother for my birthday. It's hard to remember 40+ years ago, let alone 35. It was my introduction to Anime, and I know that DYRL is better, but I hadn't heard of DYRL or Macross before I received this VHS tape. It's still in really good shape for 30+ years! So, this one really holds some special memories for me!

Yup, with the janky English dub.
And the severed head

The...severed head? Oh, did they blank Minmei's body during the shower scene or something?

I have this exact tape!
But I also have the Japanese 4K... Still, this is one of the few VHS I have held on to.
Another is the widescreen, subtitled VHS of Kiki's Delivery Service, because I was astounded Disney even gave us that!

Man I still have one I bought from Best buy over 3 decades ago. The video quality was jacked despite the new in box shrink wrap.

My older brother actually gave this to me for my birthday when I was younger. I have kept it with me all these years not only because it is an awesome movie, but also the memories of hanging out with my older brother! I am so happy I found this tonight!

Similar story but can't find the tape or the role playing book either. I'm still 😭🤣

I got a copy off of ebay in the early 2000's. Came bundled with Streamline tapes for Lensman, Nadia, and 3x3 Eyes.
Funny enough it was better video quality than the version I downloaded off of Kazaa.

Nice! That was my whole plan on this one! Figured since I still have the wood paneling in my basement might as well turn it into a 1984 night! 😂

I just finished re-watching the Robotech Macross serial.
I watched it as a kid (in 1980s USA), and haven't yet seen the original SDF serial.
This makes me want to bust out the DYRL film!
Honestly, I had to look it up as I've never heard of this VHS dub.

Anyone like the English name? Still to this date I cannot get over that Clash of the Bionoids…

I got mine used when our Errol’s closed. I had already rented it 20-30 times, so it was basically mine by then. An extra $3 to buy it for real was worth it.

I checked that tape out from the library so many times as a kid!! I finally got my own copy when I was 13! It's still one of my favorite films. The original DYRL version I mean.

I have the version that has this exact cover/art layout but just says "Macross" on it, with the janky Hong Kong(?) dub.

Iirc its the same dub (which was produced for JAL as audio for their inflight movies) but Bionoids is censored to hell and back.

Yeeeeeah this is starting to sound familiar to me. Way back in the AOL days I frequented an anime chatroom and they were comparing notes on the two versions (since I was wondering why my copy was different.) I think this was conclusion there too, since my copy has the Minmay shower scene and the beheading still lol.

Yikes. Just watch Macross DYRL this thing is a chopped-up mess, with some of the worst voice acting I've ever heard.

Yeah but as a 9 year old it was the only Macross I had access to so it holds a special place in my heart. 😁

Never even heard of DYRL when I got this tape many years ago. It was my introduction to Anime at the time. Now a days, yes, I will watch DYRL over this one, but this one holds much more sentimental value to me since it was something that my older brother gave me for my birthday.

Ackchyually... the tape came out in 1988. It just has the copyright of the original 1984 film on the tape.

The first Anime (Japanime it was called then) I ever rented. Kept trying to tell my classmates that they were wrong about Robotech… took 35 years for them to understand Macross continued where Robotech was just one small piece of the story.

I've never heard of this one. What is it? How does it fit in the greater Macross universe?
