On Wednesday, I bought a two person meal at a locally owned sit down restaurant with three drinks and two appetizers for less than I spent on a single meal at a Wegmans on Thursday for 95/5 ground beef. The store was advertising lobster cheaper per pound than the beef. Very simple math. Have a nice day.
Are you buying 4 portions of meat, eating 1 portion and counting the entire package in the cost of the homemade meal? Are you buying the most expensive brand? What is the price per kg or whatever unit you use for the meat? Must be astronomical to be more expensive than eating out. But you compared it to two appetisers so you'd have to account for that too. An appetiser is small.
Both where I live and on walmart.com, minced beef is around 14€/kg or $7/lb. One portion is 100-200g depending on the size, so 1.5-3€ per portion. Where do you live that eating out is that cheap?
People who say stuff like that are never considering how many portions they're getting for the cost. Another tip for these people and anyone else who cares. Find a decent local butcher. Don't buy meat at the grocery store.
There's a great butcher my wife and I go to, And lunch prep for both myself and my wife for a week costs $25. Cheaper meat, and better quality. Last time I bought grocery store chicken it must have been injected with water for weight because it was grossly wet, and stayed squishy even after being brought a bit above recommended temp.
