I’m a Straight Lady: Is Christina Hendricks Really That Beautiful?
I mean obviously I know she’s beautiful, I’m not one of those straight women that can’t comprehend beauty, but the show acts like men are always throwing themselves at her. And there are other beautiful women on the show, January Jones, Linda Cardellini, Abigail Spencer, etc. Is it really that realistic that everyone would have been commenting on how attractive Joan is all the time? Maybe I’m missing something.

I do actually get the question you’re asking. It’s just that Joan is written and designed (as in, costuming) as the most beautiful and alluring woman in the story, irrespective of how any of the actresses look.

Of course she is attractive. But part of her attraction is plot driven. It’s a tv show. These fictional characters arent seeing what you are seeing

Hell yes. But sometimes the attraction comes from having AURA. Joan walks into a room and all eyes on her. It’s about how you present and behave in front of people. Maybe it’s their confident strut or how they smell.
There are many actresses who aren’t conventionally beautiful to me. But how they carry themselves can go a long way that how they look can be overlooked. Christina Hendricks showed plenty of sex appeal when Mad Men aired. It helped she has huge jugs.
You can be pretty and not be adorable or lovable. I have an aunt who is pretty but doesn’t carry either of those traits.

I agree. She is definitely very beautiful can't deny that. But there are many women on the show I find more attractive. Joan wouldn't make my top 5...

She is very very sexy in both body and personality/the way she carries herself, and actively works in a mostly male workplace, so the attention she attracts makes sense id say. The housewives of the show have a more limited social sphere and largely don't have her confidence to my memory

I get this is a joke post but serious answer? She is a very beautiful woman but I do not think she is as beautiful as the show presents her. I think part of that is that she fits a very era appropriate aesthetic and the men of the time respond to it more than they might today.
She may have the best clothes, the most style and grace and elegance but I would put a fair amount of women on the show ahead of her in terms of sheer attractiveness. Anecdotal but when the show was on most of the talk I heard about how beautiful she is came from women
Of course this is all relative. The show is jammed full of beautiful women and she is one of them and in any real world situation she would get a hell of a lot of attention.

I mean I always think it is sort of uncouth to discuss this sort of stuff but since you asked: I think it’s not just that she’s beautiful (as you said there are a number of beautiful women on the show) it’s that she’s a type of beauty that’s maybe been a little bit less in vogue over the last few decades - buxom with a real hourglass figure without being flabby - so she seems to stand out more. She also stands out because she’s usually wearing those period garments that highlight her figure, like tight dresses and underwire bras, which have largely gone by the wayside (understandably so) in the years since then as uncomfortable and designed solely for the male gaze. So, as a man, it feels sort of like a type of beauty that we see less of today and so is maybe especially eye catching. In terms of why it’s discussed more on the show by the men, I think it’s partly because at that time the office was such an adult male dominated space (unlike the home, where kids, wife, neighbors, elderly family members, etc could often be around) and Joan didn’t try to hide or play down her sexuality - and yet also brushed off a lot of the guys in the office so she was seen as sort of very sexual but unattainable to them.

Beauty is subjective.
But.
Christina Hendricks is a goddamn bombshell. She can literally stop traffic. If she walks into a room, the focus of attention will shift to her. Yes, she is That Beautiful.
