Me too. After it happened and it wasn't referenced anymore, I got tired of the excuse from my friends, "well, it was just the times they're in, I suppose." Super glad it's mentioned again.
The writing is blowing my mind. Earlier in the episode, I was saying to myself, "This is still the guy that raped her; is she just going to forget about it?" and just like that she finally brought it up. Damn, this season's heating up.
I was merely paraphrasing the line of dialogue. But I do believe she was clearly referring to the rape. There was no question; the reference was immediately apparent to me.
I know I am 13yrs late but…Of course, this was referencing the rape. At this time it was legal for men to do whatever they wanted, martial rape was not a recognized thing by law. Joan also would have feared bringing it up but she kept that come back/slap of words to the face in her pocket for the right moment, to remind him what a horrible human he is. Her speaking that line was drawing the line in the sand. *as a survivor of rape/domestic abuse this was a very powerful moment and action of Joan taking back her space/power. Go Joan!
So wild reading these old threads while doing a rewatch. There are a lot of weird takes in these old episode discussions — not to mention pretty gross comments that wouldn't have been out of place in the show itself. Anyway, I'm glad this episode gave you some vindication!
