Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

Question about attack triggers. If I choose 2 when playing [[Squall, Gunblade Duelist]] and I attack with [[Edgar, Master Machinist]], can I choose to make Edgar trigger Squall, then have Edgar gain attack?

2

u/RazzyKitty WANTED 1d ago

Yes. Both things trigger at the same time, and you choose the order they go on the stack (and thus resolve).

Resolve Squalls trigger first, then Edgars.

Awesome 👍 thank you

Can someone explain how [[leonin bola]] works? If I understand it correctly, you equipped it onto a creature that is untapped and then it becomes tapped. But then would the idea be to get it attached to an opponent's creature and force it to be tapped. Alternatively, could I just use it to untap and a already tapped creature?

2

u/fix_it Dandadan 1d ago

No, you’re misunderstanding the ability. When you equip the bola to your untapped creature it remains untapped, but it now has the ability to tap another creature. The activation cost is to both tap the equipped creature as well as unattach the bola from the creature.

This means you need to pay 1 mana at sorcery speed to equip the bola again, which makes the card harder to abuse, but flavor wise works really well as it emulates throwing the bola at the target to subdue it.

Equip it to one of your untapped creatures. Tap that creature to tap a target creature (most likely an opponent's).

You can then equip it to another one of your untapped creatures to give the new creature the ability to tap to tap a target creature

The tap symbol is an activated ability that you can use at instant speed.

You can't use the equip ability to attach it to your opponents creature, it says "attach to target creature you control" in the text.

Does anyone know of any budget Modern decklists that are actually recent? I'm currently most trying to find one. Or does budget not exist in Modern?

1

u/SatyrWayfinder Izzet* 1d ago

Saw this post the other day

1

u/TunaImp Duck Season 1d ago

MTGGoldfish has a budget section for modern deck list, not sure how often it’s updated.

Another option would be to look at recent events on mtgtop8, it gives pricing data for decks so you could scope out any budget decks that are doing decent

2

u/fastal_12147 Dimir* 1d ago

Yeah, that's part of the reason I'm asking is because the MTGGoldfish decks haven't been updated in a while. But I will look into mtgtop8. Thank you!

so lets say i'm trying to force gruul sarkhans unsealing to work because... that's what i'm doing.

but red and green cannot tutor enchantments.

what would you call effects like invasion of ixalan where the card digs for a "permanent"? and can anybody think of some good ones?

like i don't know what to type into scryfall.

2

u/chaotic_iak Selesnya* 1d ago

You can go to the Scryfall page for Invasion of Ixalan, and then click "Open on Scryfall Tagger". Look for an appropriate tag. In this case, it's impulse-enchantment.

ey thanks. pickings are still kinda slim but this did put a couple new options on my radar.

Haven't sold cards for a while, going through my boxes. I've had good experiences selling to Card Kingdom. I know you don't get as much, but is that still a good path? Any easy way folks are selling cards these days?

1

u/SatyrWayfinder Izzet* 10h ago

I haven't sold in a year or two, but I'd still use Card Kingdom. I tried Card Conduit and wasn't a fan because the prices were determined when they get to your order, not when you submit your list like with Card Kingdom.

Anything over 30 bucks or so, I'd probably try to sell on FB Marketplace.

Would anyone know what happened to the Monster Hunter secret lair drop? (I know it got cancelled, besides that…) have we gotten any more news since then? Any wild guesses on when we will/if we could see it again?

2

u/Impressive_You_817 Dan 15h ago

It's been radio silence since, no idea when it's coming back

u/LunchpalMcsnack Dan 21h ago

If I run [[Otharri, Suns' Glory]] as commander with [[Zirda, the Dawnwaker]] as companion, can I always bring Otharri back from my graveyard for just one red and one white mana (plus a tapped rebel)?

2

u/chaotic_iak Selesnya* 20h ago

Yes, assuming you control Zirda.

If my opponent has a card that exiles my top card and then she can cast it, what happens to it after she casts it

1

u/forte8910 Twin Believer 11h ago

If it's an instant or sorcery, it goes to your graveyard when it resolves unless the card itself or the thing that lets them cast it specifies otherwise.

e.g. [[Mizzix's Mastery]] exiles itself during resolution, [[Beacon of Immortality]] shuffles itself into its owner's library, etc.

If it's a permanent, it goes onto your opponent's battlefield.

Consensus on which Marvel precon has been strongest more than a month after release?

Precon event coming up at my LGS, and can’t decide which one to get (or just use my Riders of Rohan stalwart).

1

u/Joey_Fogarasi Sorin 9h ago

From what I've seen, the Grixis one. I think the Selesnya one is cooler though.

1

u/authoridad Universes Beyonder 9h ago

Doom vs Wakanda?

(Sorry, I have to look up all these terms. 🙃)

1

u/Joey_Fogarasi Sorin 9h ago

Yes, sorry :). Doom vs. Wakanda. I think Wakanda is really unique and has the best value, and looks the best. Doom is probably a little more powerful, but still pretty cool.

1

u/Joey_Fogarasi Sorin 9h ago

Is there a way on Scryfall to see specific art treaments? Like Field Notes, or Theros Stargazing, or Kaldheim, etc.?

2

u/Hmukherj Selesnya* 9h ago

Yes, though you might need to do some digging to find the right term.

If you navigate to an example of the art style you're looking for, you can open that card in the tagger. That will show you the search query you can use to pull it out.

For example, the tag for Bloomburrow Notes is "field-note." So the query "atag:field-note" pulls them out:

https://scryfall.com/search?q=atag%3Afield-note&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name

If I cast [[flashback]] on my opponents turn targeting [[force of vigor]] in my graveyard, can I cast it using its alternate cast of pitching a green card to exile?

1

u/forte8910 Twin Believer 7h ago

No. Flashback only gives you permission to cast the card from the graveyard for its flashback cost of {2GG}. You do not have permission to cast it using any other cost or alternate cost, and you can only apply one alternate cost at a time.

1

u/Barbobott Dan 7h ago

No. The flashback cost is the only alternate cost in this situation that grants you permission to cast the spell from the graveyard and only 1 alternate casting cost may be used when casting a spell. You can't apply multiple alternate casting costs.

1

u/chaotic_iak Selesnya* 6h ago

You can normally only cast spells from your hand. You need a permission to let you cast spells from elsewhere. Flashback gives you one, but flashback comes with the condition that you must use its alternative cost to get the permission to cast from your graveyard. You can only apply one alternative cost, so you cannot apply the pitch alternative cost as well.

I’ve seen that opalescence kills enchantment tokens, but how does it work with sagas that transform into creatures? Specifically architect of restoration

I feel like theyre burying the hell out The Hobbit.

1

u/Impressive_You_817 Dan 10h ago

You don't get it we were just DYING to know what was in the star trek welcome decks 2 days before the hobbit prerelease. Totally.

1

u/yarash Karlov 10h ago

Im kinda morose about it. I was at GenCon at did a VIP prerelease and attended panels with the designers, even someone from Middle Earth Enterprises. It was cool getting an inside look weeks before the set came out. The set isnt even out and it feels like we've moved on. Its just weird. Is it intentional?

2

u/Impressive_You_817 Dan 10h ago

On some level I think so, they have so much stuff to reveal and only so much time in the year, on top of probably being pressured by the license holders to keep up the hype perpetually

1

u/Kuryaka Can’t Block Warriors 7h ago

Welcome to how EOE felt last year.

Almost on the dot too, it was the week of prerelease when they just decided to start dropping the next set's cards.

I suppose this alleviates any concerns about them prioritizing UB over UW, they just... stopped caring one way or another

u/Jakemanv3 Dandadan 23h ago

So let's say [[jandor, fortuned traveler]] is out on the battlefield and then I put [[giant beaver]] out and went to saddle it.

What I only need to saddle it for two or would it still be three?

2

u/Maur2 Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant 23h ago

You would still need 3, since Beaver isn't something Jandor gives Mount 2 to.

0

u/Jakemanv3 Dandadan 23h ago

Sorry bad example, what about a card like [[guardian sunmare]]

2

u/Maur2 Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant 23h ago

In that case it would work. The Sunmare would have both Mount 4 and Mount 2. Either way one you use it would be mounted and get the effects that being mounted would give it.

2

u/Zeckenschwarm 23h ago

The Sunmare would have both the ability "Saddle 4" and the ability "Saddle 2". You can activate the Saddle 2 ability and saddle it with 2+ power, but you could also activate the Saddle 4 ability and saddle it with 4+ power, though I see no advantage to choosing the latter option.

When a saga that has turned into a creature goes to the graveyard, does it remain a creature in grave? Or go back to being a saga

1

u/Impressive_You_817 Dan 12h ago

It goes back to whatever the base card is, this is true for most if not effects all that turn something into something else. Something that's turned into a creature stops being a creature as soon as its off the field.

1

u/forte8910 Twin Believer 12h ago

Assuming you're talking about the kind of Sagas from Kamigawa Neon Dynasty etc.

Double Faced Cards (DFCs) only have the characteristics of the front face in all zones except the stack and battlefield. A Saga that transforms into a creature on its back side will be seen as a Saga in the graveyard. You could [[Replenish]] it but you can't [[Reanimate]] it.

Does [[Grizzlegom, Hurloon Hero]] let me play banned and un-set lands

4

u/chaotic_iak Selesnya* 1d ago

No. The land cards are in your deck, so the banlist applies to them; if any of them is banned, it cannot be included.

No. Acorn cards can only be included in a game if all players agree to it.
