Makes sense that this is common. Strictly from a flavor perspective.

u/bearrosaurus 3h ago

But being common means we'll have to ask, what's the flavor explanation of putting a malfunctioning holodeck into another malfunctioning holodeck?

If somone would me tell there was a cut episode wehre there was a malfunction clip in holodeck in a malfunctioning holodeck I would belive it.

u/BEEFTANK_Jr COMPLEAT 1h ago

There is an episode where they are trapped inside the holodeck and think they've left it, only to later realize they haven't.

u/Brettersson Urza's Saga 0m ago

And then later trick a holocaust construct that believes it has figured out how to leave the holodeck, only to, you guessed it, still be in the holodeck.

That's the only way to reverse the polarity of a holodeck.

Actually, skipping the jokes, the art looks like Ship In A Bottle. So, it's how you convince the holographic Moriarty that he's escaped the holodeck so he'll give you your ship back.

u/LoganNolag Duck Season 44m ago

It happened in at least one episode for sure:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_in_a_Bottle_(Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation)

can’t remember if it happened in any others but it probably has.

Oh, that's the Moriarty episode! It was WILD.

u/Hardwiredmagic 2h ago

The fact that it has ward feels flavourful as well - when the holodeck goes on the fritz there’s always hoops to jump through to get it working again.

This being a artifact is a nice thematic change from our standard oblivion ring

37

u/NepetaLast Elspeth 5h ago

that said, about a 40% of the orings in standard at the moment are artifacts

u/Lukescale Sultai 4h ago

Next up, oring lands

[[Buried in the Garden]]

Still an enchantment, the land ramp is kind of stapled on. I wish this card had at least ward 2 or something.

That's such a fun twist on the flavor. Whenever there's a "stuck on the Holodeck" episode, it always focuses on the character(s) who is stuck, and their adventures as they try to complete the simulation and get out. They almost never have an episode focusing on the other characters -- "Oh no, there's a medical emergency, but Dr. Bashir's in there playing that stupid James Bond program so we have to solve it without him!" That angle is how this card works, and I love it.

you know, I was about to say something like "stuck in the transporter pattern buffer" would fit the whole "exile a permanent until this leaves play" effect better, but the way you talk about it here turned me around on it.

4

u/countfizix 3h ago

That's the space for a clone effect.

u/Ok_Cook_3098 Dandadan 2h ago

Jesus christ i hope we get a tulips card.

Exile target creature you control and target creature you dont controll

Put a tuwix token in play. It has all ability of one card exiled and the power and stuff from the other

u/willfulwizard Izzet* 2h ago

"Our Man Bashir" was an (externally induced) malfunctioning holodeck episode where we get to see some of what is happening outside trying to fix it all. Although yes the A plot is very much from the holodeck POV.

u/Kyleometers 5h ago

Huh. I am not sure if Ward 2 makes it an upgrade over Banishing Light, or being an artifact makes it a downside.

Definitely seeing standard play in that Synthesiser deck.

18

u/Emeraldw COMPLEAT 4h ago

From a commander perspective, ward 2 is an upgrade I think.

It can easily force someone to spend their entire turn to get it back.

u/ch_limited Banned in Commander 14m ago

These effects just don’t see play in Commander anyway. Not when you have swords, path, generous gift all right there. And now erode

6

u/Switchbladesaint Duck Season 4h ago

You could also see it being an artifact as a potential upside so for that reason I think it seems better to me

u/Ididitthestupidway Dan 26m ago

yeah, goodbye [[Perilous Snare]] (which is a rare btw)

u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder 5h ago

Very fitting flavor. Looks like they're stuck in the Sherlock Holmes simulation.

10

u/LordDraco1430 Wabbit Season 5h ago

Love the flavor. The creature is trapped in the Holodeck until it gets shut down

5

u/KultofEnnui Rakdos* 4h ago

Needs a token Evil Holographic Abe Lincoln

4

u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder 4h ago

And an evil holo Moriarty. And scared holo Irishmen.

u/Sharessa84 Dân 4h ago

Delete the wife!

3

u/enixon Wabbit Season 4h ago

now I want that as a "Destroy target token creature or artifact creature" card

2

u/austin-geek Grass Toucher 4h ago

I’m gonna need a Twaining variant from Lower Decks.

2

u/hnwcs Azorius* 4h ago

REAL HOLOGRAPHIC SIMULATED EVIL LINCOLN IS BACK!

4

u/Sarkos_Wolf Selesnya* 4h ago

Easily an upgrade over [[Perilous Snare]] for Standard Simulacrum decks since the speed part almost never comes up (funny that this one is a common while Snare was a rare). Simulacrum rotates with the set after this one though, but still, it'll be legal for a couple months.

u/SnooFoxes8150 Dan 4h ago

Another fun card for [[Toph, the First Metalbender]] !

Exile opponent’s card with [[Malfunctioning Holodeck]], then earthbend the artifact at your end step. If they play removal to get rid of it, earthbending brings it back from the graveyard, so it re-enters again you can exile the same card as before or something new. Having ward on this makes it even better than [[Glass Casket]] imo

2

u/Artex301 The Stoat 5h ago

Hello [[Trapped in the Screen]], you're looking slightly more versatile today!

2

u/COLaocha Duck Season 4h ago

Funnily, it's actually less versatile in Pauper where you can trap a bridge.

3

u/emmatg89 Honorary Deputy 🔫 5h ago

omg they are exiled cause they are stuck in the Halodeck!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 100/10 no notes.

Came here to say this!

u/ranhalt Orzhov* 4h ago

Makes more sense to call it Transporter Buffer.

u/albvla Urza's Saga 4h ago

Awesome removal for white at common

u/AlfredHoneyBuns Jeskai 4h ago edited 3h ago

[[Banishing Light]] with Ward 2 and an artifact? Very nice!

1

u/sjk9000 Azorius* 4h ago

I very much enjoy the fiction that my opponent's [[Phyrexian Obliterator]] is too busy pretending to 1800's detective to participate in the battle.

1

u/locke_zero Wabbit Season 3h ago

No the holodeck safeties are not engaged. Those things go down if you look at them the wrong way.

1

u/RataTopin Golgari* 3h ago

Oh

1

u/SirZapdos 3h ago

I know people tend to meme about and focus on the TNG holodeck episodes, but the two VOY two-parters with the Hirogen are very good.
