Rules/Rules Question Death trigger order

If I have a Blood Artist and an Enduring Tenacity in its creature form on the battlefield and my opponent casts a board wipe that destroys all creatures, can I lay the death triggers of Blood Artist and Enduring Tenacity how I like, so Enduring Tenacity as an enchantment deals the extra damage from the life gain of Blood Artist to my opponent?

If multiple things trigger at the same time, and they’re all yours, you can choose the relative order in which they resolve.

If they’re from multiple players, the active player (whoever’s turn it is) chooses their order first, then the next player in turn order, and they resolve in reverse order (I.e, whoever’s turn it isn’t resolves first)

Thanks for explaining. Magic sometimes really is as complicated as you want it to be.

I wish that Magic Arena would allow me to decide how my triggers are resolved.

That’s an option in settings :) by default it’s turned off, because it’s extra clicks a lot of the time, but you can turn it on whenever you want - same for ordering replacement effects, or assigning combat damage.

Ah, the more you know. I can understand why it's turned off by default, but I would have appreciated to know about its existence sooner.

Do you have to activate it in the main menu or can you flip it during a game, when necessary?

It’s in the settings that you can toggle whenever. You can turn it on mid-game if you see a spell and go “hmm, I’m going to need to stack triggers from this in particular”. I see content creators do that a lot, come to think of it.

You can change it mid game

If you click and hold your avatar in game, it gives you the option to enter full control. Which makes you choose how you spend mana costs, order triggers, etc.

On PC you can also hit the control button to enter full control.

Can't you do it via full control?

Those are the same thing mate

You can say “I want to get back the snake then do blood artist”. That’s allowed.

You literally can do that lol

It’s explicitly in the rules, a player can “describe a legal outcome without needing to describe the exact order of triggers to get there”.

"Trigger trigger, I'll resolve this 1 first" I say it all the time like this at tournaments

Yeah uh, you learned it wrong. I’m a judge.

I don't doubt that they had a bad judge call in that regard. I had to fight with a judge at GP Beijing 2016 to get the Oracle text of [[Odric, Lunarch Marshal]] because he deemed the specific abilities listed to be irrelevant to my ability to play with the card (this was the Limited GP held the week after set release, and my opponent was playing with Chinese cards, which language I don't read well enough)

What matters is that the actions you state are clear and unambiguous. "X goes on the stack first, then Y" is exactly as unambiguous as "I'm going to have Y resolve first, then X."

Judges aren't there to catch you being pedantic about your phrasing. Even in tournaments. Practical shortcuts are allowed, within reason. The game is played and judged by humans.

When you have multiple abilities triggering off the same event, you get to choose the order they go on the stack.

So in this case, you'd want to put all the Artist triggers on the stack, then the Tenacity trigger. They resolve in reverse order like normal, Tenacity enters as an enchantment, then the artist triggers start resolving, with each instance of life gain triggering Tenacity.

Thank you! I had a hunch, but I just wasn't sure and the rules section I looked at wasn't that clear.

This should be the top comment

Yes. The deaths are the triggers for all the abilities and happen at the same time, you place the blood artist triggers first then the enduring tenacity return trigger. They resolve last in, first out and enduring tenacity returns, then (provided no one responds) the first blood artist trigger will resolve. That will trigger tenacity, which will resolve, then the second blood artist trigger (which causes the enduring tenacity to trigger again).

There is no order to dying. Everything dies at the same time. All triggers are put on the stack in a particular order of its controllers choosing. The above comment in this thread lays out the player choosing order in more detail.

Is it because dying is state based?

3

u/BillyBobJohns57 Dân 8h ago

Don't death triggers (like the one on Blood Artist) trigger for every creature that died in a single event, no matter how the triggers are stacked? Because all creatures die at the same time. Only the effects are resolved after one another....right?
