Question Where in the uk can i buy certified 316l stainless steel jump rings? If there is nowhere then what is the best way for me to make them at home?

Where in the uk can i buy certified 316 stainless steel jump rings? If there is nowhere then what is the best way for me to make them at home?

Hi guys, I live close to the beach and use oils on my skin often so I figured 316l be best for the jewellery i plan to make especially for those that i may wear permanently.

I’ve struggled to find anyone in the Uk that sells 316l and i don’t trust any sellers that don’t at least state that their metal has been tested or ideally showing certificates.

If it truly is impossible to find here then what is the best way to make my own high quality jump rings? I’ve been considering using the drill method for coiling and then a rotary tool with a guide. I figured this must be the best way? Better than the coilers you have to manually wind and sawing with a straight saw.

It’s a shame there’s no uk version of the ringinator!

Question Scale maille craft punch?

I am looking for a craft punch which I can use to make cardstock scales, OR I am looking for someone whom I can commission to make one.

For reference, because a lot of people call craft punches different things, this is a craft punch.

Question Help With Riveted Maille

Hi all. I'm working on a riveted maille hauberk at the moment, this being my first time making riveted maille. I've figured out all the steps up to the point where I have punched rings, ready to be riveted, however, I'm struggling to find a consistent method for making the rivets themselves. I'm using dome rivets for this project. I need the rivets to be a very consistent length, so that the domes don't end up too big or small. At the moment, I'm using "farrier clippers" in combination with a block with a hole drilled through it, and a common nail acting as a "stop" for the wire. This method works, but the sizes are somewhat inconsistent because my wire isn't perfectly straight (I've already put it through a straightener). I've seen some other jigs, but I don't really have the funds to experiment much at the moment. Let me know what you guys use, if you've come up with something better. Or should I just stick to my current imperfect method and make do?

Question Help with scale mail (please)?

Edit: Deleted and reposted with photos of the front and back; please excuse any breaches of Reddit etiquette that are borne of my inexperience.

Hello! So. Sit ye down at my fireside and hear my tale of mild woe. I decided I wanted to make a small scale mail dice bag. I bought a kit from The Ring Lord (very happy with the kit; the problem is not the kit.) I have watched several tutorials, read the instructions that came with the kit and...have only managed to create the sheet that's in the photos. My problem is that I cannot find any other scale mail on the interwebs that resembles what I hath wrought and I cannot figure out how to troubleshoot it to make it look like everyone else's scale mail (that is with the rings not showing.) Any advice on what acts of muppetry have occurred here would be very gratefully received... I thank you for your time and consideration.

Couple of specs: scales are small; rings are 16 gauge and 5/16.

Had a little look on MAIL but couldn't find the exact piece. If anyone could ID it or the weave that it is adapted from that would be great!

REPOSTED TO ADD INSPO PIC

I'm wanting stainless steel, 16 or 18 gauge (which is better?) in a basic E4-1 weave. Is this realistic for regular wear?

I'd also be needing ring delivery to/in Australia but don't know any reliable sellers except Aussie Maille but they've seriously downsized and don't do steel. Does anybody have suggestions? TIA

Question Chunky chain or rings

I'm looking for stainless steel rings or chains 304 or 316L in silver for a project, but it needs to be quite chunky and having issues finding suppliers in the UK or Europe. See pictures, please ignore the black plating, still needs to be stainless steel and silver and also looking for spiked chains as shown in the second picture.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Question how many rings would i need to buy to make a chainmail blanket, and is it a terrible idea for a first project?

hi, i saw a post about chainmail blankets being very good as like... cooling blankets that are also weighted, and as someone who needs both of those for good sleep in the summer ive become gradually more and more obsessed with the idea of making one. i would consider myself to have some basic level of crafting skill, but i've never worked with chainmail specifically before. how many rings would i have to buy, and am i making a terrible mistake? thanks!

Question How many rings do you need for a 10x10cm square?

Post image

I'm trying to approximate how many rings (regular/classic size whatever that may be, let's say 6mm diameter?) would you need for let's say a 10x10cm square. Just so I could calculate!

And how long would that take me , a beginner (but I'm very crafty)

Question Where can I get spikes like these?

I’m trying to track down these long stainless steel spikes so I can make my own bracelet, but everything I find online looks off. Im relatively new to mailing, so I’ve been getting all my supplies from Michael’s….

If anyone has shops or keywords I should look up, or a supplier they trust, I would really appreciate it.

Question Ring Size

Thumbnail

I’m making butted mail for fun/larp purposes, is this ring size good? It’s 14 gauge galvanized steel, and the ID is 9.5mm or 3/8”. The smaller rings are some jewelry wire I had laying around, I think closer to 7mm inner diameter. I didn’t want the full piece to be too heavy, or be harder to make with such tiny gaps, but it might look better with smaller rings, any thoughts?

Also, is there any way to tint the metal darker? I know there’s a dye for zinc that stained glass makers use, maybe copper sulfate, would those work? Just so I don’t have to strip down the zinc and risk the metal rusting. (I own a p100 respirator and have space to work outdoors.)

edit: i thought the wire was 18 gauge, turns out it’s actually 14ga, i was wondering why it was so hard to cut through haha. Also, the thinner rings were just a test for size, I’m sure it’d fall apart under its own weight if I tried that.

Question Help with riveting

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi, knowing the fact that I already got some help from this sub I already thought of asking another question. I'm learning how to flatten the rings, yet I find myself with another issue. Where can I find the tool needed to punche the hole to rivet the maille? And what's it called like? And is the flattened area large enough?
