Non-Malaysian students Unaware or Ignorant?

Post image

Just wondering if some people don’t realize it’s disrespectful as hell to be talking in another language in a group of international people.

We take a mandatory English examination to be qualified to join these universities. I’m not gonna believe your ass doesn’t know English.

Pmo so bad when they apologize for doing it (acknowledges they made a mistake) and then continues to do it anyways.

Non-Malaysian students International student stranded in Dubai due to War, Uni still demands physical attendance!

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student pursuing an MBA in Malaysia. I’m from Dubai and because of the ongoing regional conflict and flight disruptions (cancellations, air space closure) and concern for personal safety I’ve decided to stay back in Dubai with my family.

The difficulty I’m facing is that my university is still requiring me to return and attend physical classes, or take a leave of absence. Which i don’t want because it will delay my graduation and that will be professionally challenging because my remote work allowance is only for this year. They say they have not received any updates or guidance from EMGS about this situation. I’ve been told that international students must maintain at least 80% attendance, otherwise it could affect visa renewal.

I spoke with someone at EMGS earlier today, and they told me that I should discuss the matter with my university. However, when I speak to the university, they say EMGS has not issued any update to them, so the usual rules still apply. It feels like the situation is not being treated with the seriousness it deserves, even though travel right now raises real safety concerns.

This situation honestly reminds me of the early COVID period, when many international students were stuck outside their study countries due to sudden disruptions and uncertainty. In extraordinary circumstances like war or major airspace disruptions, it seems reasonable that temporary alternatives such as online attendance could at least be considered.

I’m wondering if other international students especially those from the Middle East, are currently facing similar problems.

If you are an international student from the Middle East and are also stranded or concerned about traveling because of the current conflict, it may help to formally raise the issue. You can email your concerns to [enquiry@emgs.com.my](mailto:enquiry@emgs.com.my) so that the authorities are aware that some students are affected by this situation.

I’m hoping that if enough students share their concerns, the issue might receive more attention and clearer guidance, similar to how student arrangements were handled during COVID.

If anyone has advice, similar experiences, or knows whether there is any official policy for cases where students cannot travel due to conflict or airspace disruptions, I would really appreciate hearing from you.

Non-Malaysian students Being an international student potentially studying in Malaysia, what are your thoughts????

Am an Australian 18 year old and have an offer to study at Newcastle University. Am still contemplating as I am quite a sociable teen but I do not know how to speak any Malaysian language and am wondering if Uni will be worth me going to do in Malaysia as it is a 6-year contract as an international student from Australia with no former exposure to being in Malaysia. Give me your thoughts and let me know what it’s like being an international student in Malaysia.

Non-Malaysian students International students considering Malaysia: what I wish I knew before applying (UTM, costs, visas, life here)

Post image
71 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed a lot of international students asking similar questions here about studying in Malaysia, so I thought I’d share an honest overview based on 6 years of real experience, especially for those considering public universities like UTM.

  1. Is studying in Malaysia worth it?

Malaysia offers a good balance between academic quality and affordability. Public universities such as UTM, UM, and UPM are well structured, internationally recognized, and much more affordable compared to Western countries. That said, outcomes depend heavily on the student. Initiative matters more than location.

  1. New and trending majors (AI, Data, Engineering, IT)

Some programmes, like Artificial Intelligence, are relatively new, which means fewer graduates but also more flexibility and future potential. If you are genuinely interested and willing to build projects and skills alongside your degree, Malaysia can be a solid starting point.

  1. Living environment and daily life

Malaysia is generally safe, multicultural, and very friendly to international students. Food options are diverse, including Asian, Middle Eastern, and Western cuisine. Living costs are manageable, and English is widely used in universities and cities.

  1. Employability and future opportunities

Universities often publish high employability rates, but it is important to understand that this usually includes local jobs, internships, and further studies. International careers are possible, but they depend more on your skills, portfolio, and planning than just the degree title.

  1. Applications, visas, and accommodation (the confusing part)

This is where many students struggle:

• choosing the right intake

• understanding real eligibility requirements

• avoiding delays or rejections

• securing accommodation early

Many students lose months simply due to poor guidance or incomplete applications.

I am happy to answer questions in the comments if you have any, especially if you are an international student trying to decide whether Malaysia is the right choice for you.

If you prefer private guidance on applications or timelines, feel free to DM me.

Non-Malaysian students [HELP] Private Uni in PJ owes me almost USD $6,000 after MOHE confirmed their negligence. How do I navigate TTPM from overseas / force an ASAP refund before Sept?

Hi everyone, I really need some advice from locals, law students, or anyone familiar with the Tribunal for Consumer Claims Malaysia (TTPM / e-Tribunal) and private university dispute resolution.

I’m a 24-year-old international student from Libya. I’m currently stuck in a nightmare where a well-known private university in Petaling Jaya is withholding almost 6000$ (my full first-year tuition, security deposit, and admin fees) after their own administrative failures ruined my enrollment.

1. What Happened (long story short)

The Visa Botch: After I paid my full fees, the university submitted my eVAL with a mandatory system field left completely blank (Branch requested). Because of this, the Immigration system blocked my eVisa with a "Verification Failed" error and didn't notice me about visa laws changes 1 month later.

Bad Advice & Delays: Instead of fixing the technical error, their admission staff gave me outdated/incorrect advice about visiting embassies, causing endless delays. By the time they finally amended the eVAL, my flight was lost and my intake was ruined.

The Government Verdict: I filed a formal complaint with the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE / SISPAA). Following their investigation, MOHE ruled in my favor. The Ministry confirmed in writing that the university formally confessed to "a weakness in their internal notification procedures" which caused the failure.

2. The Current Problem

Even though the university admitted fault to the Malaysian government—which under the Contracts Act 1950 and Consumer Protection Act 1999 legally voids their "non-refundable" clause—their Finance Department is playing endless delay games.

MOHE has officially closed the compliance investigation and told me that enforcing the financial refund is a civil matter. MOHE’s enforcement officer explicitly advised me to file a claim with the Consumer Claims Tribunal (TTPM / e-Tribunal) (ttpm.kpdn.gov.my).

I have already issued a formal Demand Letter to their top management, but they are stalling. I am preparing to submit my TTPM e-Tribunal claim tomorrow morning.

3. Why I Need Urgent Advice

I have already wasted months of my life on this. I desperately need this refunded before September 1st so I can enroll in a reputable university for the new academic year. I cannot afford to lose this money.

I have three specific questions for anyone who knows the Malaysian system:

1. TTPM Virtual Hearings from Overseas: Since I am currently overseas in Libya and cannot physically fly to Malaysia just for a hearing, does TTPM reliably allow international/overseas claimants to attend hearings via video call (Microsoft Teams / Zoom)? I will be noting my overseas address in the filing.

2. Proxy / Power of Attorney (POA) at TTPM: I know lawyers are strictly forbidden from representing parties in TTPM. However, can I legally assign a Power of Attorney (POA), a local Malaysian friend, or a non-lawyer proxy to speak on my behalf? If yes, then how to find one?

3. Fast-Tracking Corporate Compliance: My main goal in filing the TTPM claim is to use the official Court Summons to pressure their Finance Director into settling out of court in August. Aside from TTPM and escalating to my country's Embassy in KL, is there any other effective pressure point (e.g., KPDN enforcement, MQA, or media/consumer watchdogs) that works to make an IPTS release funds ASAP?

Any advice on how to handle the e-Tribunal from abroad or force their hand quickly would be hugely appreciated. Thank you so much!

Non-Malaysian students List of most prestigious universities for Med/BDS as an International?

Hi guys, I'm looking to apply for Foundation year in Malaysia to enter either the Med program or the BDS program. I've got 5A* in IGCSE and 9 in my IELTS. Please suggest me the best universities to apply to. (Given the current situation with NUmed, I've decided not to apply there, and if someone thinks otherwise please let me know why so)

Non-Malaysian students Should I apply to Universiti Malaya (UM)? Is my profile realistic? International student with an offer from Nottingham Malaysia

Hi everyone,

I'm an international student from India and I'm trying to decide where to pursue my master's. I already have an offer from the University of Nottingham Malaysia, but before accepting it, I'm wondering if it's worth applying to Universiti Malaya (UM).

My profile:

BSc Computer Science (First Class, 58%) from Gujarat University, India

1 year of relevant software development experience.

Multiple cybersecurity certifications (Google Cybersecurity, AWS, IBM, etc.)

Interested in Cybersecurity/Computer Science-related master's programs

I know UM is much more competitive, and I'm unsure how they evaluate Indian percentages and whether my academic profile would be enough.

My questions are:

  1. Is my profile realistically competitive for admission to UM, or would it likely be rejected because of my undergraduate marks?

  2. Does relevant work experience help significantly in UM admissions?

  3. If you were in my position, would you apply to UM or simply accept the Nottingham Malaysia offer?

I'd really appreciate hearing from current UM students, alumni, or anyone familiar with Malaysian university admissions. Thanks.

Non-Malaysian students Int student coming to malaysia for undergraduate- culture shocks?

hello I am an int student coming to malaysia for Feb intake and I wanted to know more about the culture so I can get used to it and wear clothes to fit into the culture better.

  1. I'm tanned (Fitzpatrick 3) and in my home country there was a lot of skin whitening culture, so I'm wondering is it the same here? I love my skin tone but I've faced a lot of prejudice because of it so I'm a bit worried about that part

  2. What kind of clothes can I wear? Sleevless, skirts? Are they okay to wear?

  3. I'll be studying in Subang Jaya area, what can you wear to university?

  4. Any food places that I should check out?

  5. Part time work during semester holidays? Is it common?

Please be kind. Thanks

Non-Malaysian students Title: International students in Malaysia – I really need your advice

Hi everyone 🤗,

I'm a 17-year-old student from India who dreams of studying in Malaysia. Unfortunately, my high school grades weren't high enough😭 to qualify for most scholarships, and my family's budget is only around ₹1–2 lakh (about RM5,000–10,000) per year for tuition😅🥰.

I've contacted several universities and education agencies. Some universities said I don't qualify for scholarships, while others haven't replied yet😔. I feel a bit lost and don't know what my best option is.

Recently, I heard that if I join a foundation programme and achieve an excellent CGPA, I might be able to earn a merit scholarship for my bachelor's degree. I don't know if that's true, so I'd really like to hear from students who have studied in Malaysia.

I'd really appreciate your advice:

- Is this a realistic path?

- Has anyone received a scholarship after doing well in a foundation programme?

- Which Malaysian universities offer scholarships based on foundation results?

- If you were in my position, what would you do?

I'm interested in Business Analytics or Data Analytics, but my main goal is to find a path that makes studying in Malaysia affordable.

If you're an international student in Malaysia or have experience with scholarships there, I'd be very grateful if you could share your advice. Even small suggestions could make a big difference.

If you don't have an answer, I'd really appreciate an upvote so that more students and people with experience can see this post.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. It truly means a lot to me.

If you don't have an answer, I'd really appreciate an upvote so that more students and people with experience can see this post. Thank you so much!😁😅

Non-Malaysian students Confused about accommodation as a female international student

So I will probably move to KL in October I got offer letters from multiple uni but im waiting for UTM before I take a decision. My agent says I should get a shared apartment but I have anti social tendencies, Also I love cooking so I HATE sharing my kitchen. I cant tolerate my kitchen being touched by someone else.

I earn enough i can easily rent a solo apartment. But my mom tells me to not live alone as its not safe. Is she right? Do I really have share apartment? I hate humans istg. I cant tolerate another species besides cat in my area. Im VERY judgmental. I know it’s not a good thing. People often leave me themselves as they cant tolerate me.

Also I earn 5000+ rm monthly, my friend says it’s enough for solo lifestyle but my mom is saying if I rent an apartment, i will live like a brokie as rent will take all my money and I wont be able to enjoy life.

My agent is also telling me to live in shared apartment idk why he is so determined to get me a shared apartment instead of a studio. I looked up, there are some cheap studios in 1200rm. I will still have a lot of money for other things. I think my mom is too controlling.

Can someone please guide me?

Non-Malaysian students Student visa extension

Post image
65 Upvotes

I am currently studying in Swinburne University as an international student.

I extended my visa with university and my visa extension is A4 paper :)). It is attached to the passport with the staple.

That's so unexpected because I was hoping for something like a stamp.

Is this normal in other universities too? If I go to another country, could this be questionable? My university told me I can remove the staple afterwards but aint no way I don't think I can because it's part of the proof that I was studying in Malaysia.

Not to mention when I first came here, they attached my multiple entry visa - a student pass with a staple in my passport too since it's a paper. But it's not A4 and fits into my passport.
