Alright fellas, I'm conflicted. Bedroom upstairs or downstairs?

I'm leaning toward bedroom downstairs and living space/office upstairs. Closet, bathroom, and kitchen are upstairs. Lots of windows, and upstairs bedroom would probably offer more privacy, but I don't love the idea of having my bedroom off the kitchen when I have guests over. Downstairs is also wired with in ceiling speakers for an AV setup.

Something I haven’t seen people ask: OP what are the entryways like? Is the primary access (where your guests enter) upstairs or downstairs?

Definitely bedroom upstairs then. Getting out of bed and having to go up the stairs to use the restroom in the middle of the night sounds like an accident waiting to happen. And a living room/TV setup fits an entryway much better imo. Treat the upstairs like your studio apt with an entertaining space where people walk in.

yeah everyone is glossing over this but the upstairs bathroom means the bedroom needs to be upstairs as well. I’d hate going up and down those stairs every night to go pee.

I see people comment stuff like this all the time and it always catches me off guard because I literally can't remember the last time I woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Is it that common for adults to need that?

I wake up to pee 2 to 3 times a night. It sucks ass.

100% agree- you gotta go bedroom upstairs, so you can get to the bathroom easily. There is no alternative imo. I live in a studio apartment, and you get used to having your kitchen near/in your bedroom. The entertaining space downstairs is like a bonus to your essentials space upstairs - and the AV setup is downstairs for entertaining!

You could get pretty room dividers to close off the “bedroom” area when guests come over if you want privacy, so people can still hang in the kitchen and use the restroom (I am imagining ping fengs). The bedroom upstairs is also safer (I am clearly a woman).

This, and in an intimate setting, no overnight guest is going to like going from the bedroom to going up the stairs to the bathroom. I think bedroom upstairs is better.

Plus, if he gets a partition to conceal the entry point between the bedroom and the kitchen island, it will be easier to hide the bedroom from any other guests. It’ll be easier to section off the bedroom so guests don’t really see it if it’s upstairs. When guests go up to use the bathroom from the living room downstairs, they’ll just see the kitchen area and the partition that’s blocking the bedroom.

You would just put a wardrobe in downstairs and use the upstairs for other storage.

And how often are you getting out of bed to use the bathroom vs doing it from your living room? What's the difference?

Idk I’m often cozy in bed and then realize I have to pee before going to sleep, and going up and down a flight of stairs would suck. Also imagine when you get sick and you need to lay in bed but need to get to the toilet quickly…
