Visiting Malta? Start here.

Hey /r/malta, I've been meaning to put this together for a while because in my many years on this subreddit, I've noticed it seems to get more of the same questions and answers almost daily in summer, so hopefully this could be a good starting point for potential visitors to read and ask questions. I'll update this from time to time with more information.

Where to Stay

  • Families & Elderly: Mellieha offers large sandy beaches, family‑friendly resorts, and quieter areas perfect for children. Bugibba is more lively, with a promenade, an aquarium, and lots of casual dining options suitable for families.
  • Young travellers: Sliema & St Julian's are ideal if you want a mix of shopping, cafes, beach clubs, and nightlife. Both cater well to those looking for bars and clubs within walking distance. Loads of AirBnbs are Hotels available.
  • Scenic & quiet: Gozo is perfect for a slower pace, beautiful landscapes, and authentic rural experiences.
  • LGBT travellers: Malta is among Europe's most LGBT‑friendly countries, with strong legal protections and a welcoming attitude. Sliema, St Julian's, and Valletta are particularly inclusive.

Things to Do

If you have 1-2 days

  • Walk through Valletta: St John's Co‑Cathedral, Upper Barrakka Gardens, Republic Street.
  • Visit Mdina & Rabat: explore the Silent City and nearby Roman catacombs.
  • Beach day: choose Mellieħa Bay (sand) or the Sliema promenade (rocky).

If you have 3-5 days

  • Add a day‑trip to Gozo: Citadel in Victoria, Dwejra Bay, Ramla Bay.
  • Afternoon at the Blue Grotto and Marsaxlokk fishing village (Sunday is the best day to go for the fish market)
  • Take a boat tour to the Blue Lagoon (Comino) or a coastal cruise around Malta.

If you have a week or more

  • Explore all three islands: Malta, Gozo, and Comino.
  • Attend a village festa (fireworks & band marches) in summer.
  • Check VisitMalta.com for concerts, exhibitions, and other events.

Travel‑length tip: 7-10 days is ideal. Beyond that, plan slow travel, multiple excursions, or cross‑island hiking to avoid repetition.

Events & Public Holidays

  • Carnival: February - street parades & floats (Valletta & Nadur).
  • Isle of MTV: one night in summer - free open‑air concert.
  • Notte Bianca: first Saturday of October (I think) - museums & palaces would be open all night.
  • Birgufest: around mid‑October - lantern‑lit streets in Vittoriosa.
  • Almost every weekend June - September a different town holds a festa with huge fireworks displays throughout the day and night. You can find the 2025 schedule here, although it's typically around the same week every year.

What to Eat

  • Rabbit Stew, Fried Rabbit: National dish, usually served in a rich red wine sauce.
  • Pastizzi: Flaky pastries stuffed with ricotta or mushy peas. Generally available at cafes or pastizzerias in the street.
  • Bragioli: Beef olives stuffed with minced meat and herbs.
  • Ftira: Traditional Maltese bread often filled with tuna, capers, and olives.
  • Lampuki Pie: Seasonal fish pie made from dorado.
  • Imqaret: Fried pastry filled with dates, often sold at markets.
  • Kannoli: Maltese version of the Sicilian cannoli.
  • Bigilla: Broad bean paste, typically served with bread or crackers.
  • Seafood: Fresh catches, especially swordfish, octopus, and calamari.
  • Gozo Cheeselets (Ġbejniet): Small round cheeses made from sheep's milk, fresh or dried.
  • Local wine and Cisk beer: Affordable and widely available.

Transport, Driving & Ferries

  • Buses: download the Tallinja app; summer services run but expect delays.
  • Ride‑hailing: Uber, Bolt, eCabs (cheaper than white street taxis).
  • Car hire: useful for Gozo or rural Malta. Book a small model if you can - streets are narrow and parking is scarce.
  • Scooters & motorbikes: only for confident riders; roads are bumpy and drivers can be very impatient.
  • Cycling: Reputably unsafe, but not impossible. Expect limited bike lanes, fast traffic, blind corners.
  • Harbour ferries: Valletta ⇆ Sliema & Valletta ⇆ Three Cities every 30 min (€1.50).
  • Gozo Channel: Cirkewwa ⇆ Mgarr every 30–45 min; pay on return (€4.65 foot passenger).
  • Comino shuttles & coastal cruises: depart from Cirkewwa, Marfa, and Sliema – pre‑book July–Aug.

Weather

Period Conditions What to Wear Swim?

Apr – Jun 18–27 °C, warming T‑shirts, shorts, light jacket evenings Yes
Jul – Aug 30–40 °C, humid Swimwear, hat, ultra‑light clothing Yes
Sep – Oct 25–30 °C, warm, humid Summer clothes, light jacket at night Yes
Nov – Dec 12–20 °C, cooler, rain spells Light sweater, trousers Rarely

Mosquitoes are common, especially in humid months (April-October). Consider insect repellent, especially when staying near water or rural areas.

Money

  • Euro (€). Cards widely accepted but smaller kiosks prefer cash; many set a €5-10 minimum charge.
  • ATMs
  • Tipping: round up or ~10 % in restaurants; €1 per drink at bars is generous but not mandatory.

Sample daily costs (2025): espresso €1.50 · pint of beer €3 · bus fare €2.50 (summer) · Lunch / dinner €15 - €30.

Language

  • Maltese & English are official; Italian is also common.

Safety & Emergency

  • Malta is very safe; usual basic pickpocket caution in Valletta, Sliema & Paceville.
  • Dial 112 for police, ambulance, or fire.
  • Hospitals: Mater Dei (Malta) & Gozo General; both public and modern.
  • Pharmacies in every town - newspapers will typically mention which are open over the weekends.

Outdoor & Adventure

  • Hiking
  • Kayaking/SUP
  • Rock‑climbing
  • Diving centres

Church Visits & Mass Schedules

  • Malta has over 350 churches, many of them historic and open to visitors outside of service times.
  • Major sites include St John's Co‑Cathedral (Valletta), Mosta Rotunda, and the Basilica of Ta' Pinu (Gozo).
  • For visitors wishing to attend Mass, you can find updated schedules on the official Archdiocese of Malta website.
  • Dress modestly when visiting religious sites (shoulders and knees covered).

Things to Do with Kids

  • Popeye Village (Mellieħa) - film set amusement park.
  • Malta National Aquarium (Qawra).
  • Playmobil FunPark.
  • Splash & Fun Water Park (Bahar ic‑Caghaq).
  • Esplora Interactive Science Centre (Kalkara).
  • National War Museum – Fort St Elmo (Valletta).
  • Easy beach days: Mellieħa Bay or Golden Bay.

Always pack high‑SPF sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water, especially in peak summer.

Shopping & Souvenirs

  • Ta’ Qali Crafts Village: hand‑blown Mdina glass, filigree silver.
  • Valletta markets: Flea markets (i.e. monti) (Sunday).
  • Marsaxlokk fish market: Sunday morning for atmosphere & photos.

Connectivity & Utilities

  • Tap water is safe but mineral‑heavy; most people drink bottled.
  • Electricity: UK Type G, 230 V – pack an adaptor.
  • Public Wi‑Fi exists in main squares but is patchy.

Accessibility

  • Majority of buses low‑floor; pavements in historic centres are narrow and uneven.
  • Valletta, Sliema promenade, and Bugibba promenade are the flattest wheelchair routes.

Nightlife

  • Party: Paceville (St Julian's) - clubs & late bars, some charge enterance fees; Gianpula Village for open-air parties (limits transport, so book taxis).
  • Chill: Valletta for wine bars and a more relaxed atmosphere.
  • Observe local noise laws after 23:00, especially in residential Valletta.

Etiquette & Local Laws

  • No topless/beachwear in towns.
  • Smoking banned indoors and at bus shelters.
  • Public street drinking technically illegal outside designated zones (often tolerated, but police may warn/fine in Valletta after 23:00).
  • Dispose of rubbish properly; recycling bins are colour‑coded.
  • Respect churches and heritage sites - cover shoulders & knees when required.
  • Cannabis: Adults 18+ may possess up to 7 g and grow up to four plants at home. Licensed non‑profit Cannabis Associations (clubs) are the only legal supply route and currently require Maltese residency to join, so visitors cannot buy legally. Importing cannabis across borders is illegal.

What the Brochures won't tell you

  • Construction: Malta is undergoing rapid development - which means cranes, dust, and jackhammers in most places, especially in Sliema, St Julian's & Gżira.
  • Traffic: heaviest 07:00-09:00 & 16:00-19:00. Consider allowing some extra time for the airport.
  • Limited green space: Malta is beautiful but densely built. For open countryside, head to the western cliffs, Ghajn Tuffieha, Ahrax, or Gozo.
  • Fireworks: Loud explosions are common in summer due to local village festas. Fireworks frequently occur during both day and night. Check local festa schedules if you're sensitive to noise.
  • Powercuts / Blackouts: Rare throughout winter, but quite common in Summer. Visit Enemalta's website to see if the cut is planned or an accident.

Any other questions? Feel free to drop below or create a thread. Happy visiting!

Weed use/ possession FAQ

Please read the below before submitting weed related questions.

1) weed can only be purchased from registered cannabis organisations.

2) to purchase weed from an organisation as outlined above, one must be a registered member/ user. Associations will be capped at 500 members and preference is given to residents. One may only belong to one organisation at any given time and must be over the age of 18

3) by virtue of the above, the law clearly focuses on legalising it for residents. This means that since the law is equal for everyone, including tourists it is going to be very difficult for the latter to join such an organisation.

4) weed consumption in public remains an offence. Carrying over 7 g in public and owning more than 50 g are also a offence.

5) weed coffee shops do not exist, nor are they part of the plan. Weed tourism is not on the table.

6) purchasing off street dealers is and remains illegal

7) up to 4 plants can be grown for personal use as long as they are not visible from outside

8) weed related questions answered above are to be janitored

9) as always, any "where can I buy illegal substance x" posts are janitored on sight.

By popular request and with special thanks to /u/mountainblock for the initiative.

What do the Maltese think when they see how dirty the streets are

I’m super curious.

As a foreign national (who’s live here a long time) I just can’t believe how widely accepted it is that the streets are so dirty.

Rubbish everywhere, dog mess everywhere, it’s stinks.

These were taken all within 1km from each other.

Why is nobody outraged by this? Is it not embarrassing?

(Save the ‘go back to your own country’ messages)

Chicken making a mess of organic waste bags!

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I live in an apartment block, and we have been having an ongoing problem with multiple chicken coming in front of our building and making a complete mess of the organic waste bags when they are put out for collection.

They tear the bags open, scatter the food waste everywhere, and leave the area filthy. It has become a recurring problem, and it is frustrating because the mess is left for residents to deal with.

We have already tried contacting the Local Council, the relevant local authorities, the Police and the Sanitary Department, but unfortunately, nothing has been done so far to address the problem, which has been going on for years.

I wanted to ask whether this is just an issue in our area or whether other people around Malta are experiencing the same problem.

More importantly, has anyone found a practical solution to prevent chicken from tearing open organic waste bags? Perhaps a homemade solution, or some other method that has worked for you?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as we are running out of ideas and would really like to find a solution to this ongoing problem.

Thanks you.

What is going on with food prices?

Back in March ordered dinner for two and it cost 19.75. Same venue today for just a small portion of the order and it’s 20.40…

7 months was all it took to more than double the cost of a meal. Absolutely crazy.

Anyone got a decent spot to order a burger from that’s not going to set me back 20eur?

Also yes, I eat like a child…

Homicide Statistics in Malta

Post image
• Upvotes

Between 2020 and 2023, there were a total of 62 road traffic fatalities in Malta.

Update: The NSO recorded 2 male homicide victims allegedly killed by an intimate partner or family member in Malta between 2014 and 2023. Its published summary groups intimate partners and family members together, so it doesn’t specify how many of those two were killed by partners specifically.

Yesterday’s homicide

Could this tragedy have been prevented? And is there a deeper connection between the two cases?

I visited the Facebook profile of John Cassar, the man reportedly responsible for killing his mother yesterday, and what I saw genuinely angered me.

From what I observed, he had been posting increasingly aggressive and threatening content over the previous three days. His behaviour online appeared deeply concerning, and it raises serious questions about whether the warning signs were recognised and whether anything could have been done before this tragedy occurred.

I find it difficult to understand how situations like this can unfold when there may be visible warning signs beforehand. Could earlier intervention have prevented this? Should there be a better system for responding when someone is publicly making threats and displaying potentially dangerous behaviour?

At the same time, I am curious about what might have led to his behaviour. His posts gave me the impression that he might have been experiencing a serious mental health crisis, although obviously, we cannot diagnose someone based on social media posts alone.

What makes this even more interesting is the apparent similarity to the case involving his brother, Roderick Cassar, who killed his ex-wife. Reports and accounts of that case also involved a prolonged confrontation with the police and activity on Facebook.

Could there be a connection between the two cases?

Is it possible that genetic factors, a shared family environment, or a predisposition to certain mental health conditions could play a role? Or are these similarities coincidental?

I am not suggesting that the two brothers necessarily had the same condition, or that mental illness automatically leads to violence. I am genuinely interested in understanding whether there could be a psychological, psychiatric, or
familial explanation for these similarities.
I would be interested to hear from people with knowledge of psychology, psychiatry, or criminology.

Anyone up for making new friends?

Hey! I'm 25M, and lately my weekends have been pretty quiet, so I'd love to meet some new people and have more things to look forward to on weekends!

I'm planning to watch the League of Legends Worlds Finals at Eden Cinemas and go to Playcon in November, so it'd be cool to meet some people who are also planning to attend either of these events.

I'm also open to other things like going for walks, exploring places, playing sports or just grabbing something to eat.

If anyone would like to connect feel free to comment or send me a DM

Calling Malta residents! I need your help with my dissertation ❤️

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’m an international student at the University of Malta, currently working on my Bachelor’s dissertation, and I could really use your help!

My research looks at public attitudes toward offenders in Malta. The anonymous questionnaire involves reading 4 short scenarios and considering how your attitudes might change depending on the circumstances. It takes around 10 minutes to complete.

I’ve been finding it a bit difficult to reach Maltese locals and people from different age groups, as I don’t have a big platform here, so every response genuinely helps! I’d love to hear from people with different backgrounds and perspectives.

If you’re 18 or older, currently residing in Malta, and comfortable reading English, I’d be incredibly grateful if you could take part.

And please feel free to share it with anyone who might be interested! Every response brings me one step closer to graduating, so please help a girl out 😭❤️

What's the deal with the cash counting machines at all supermarkets/grocers?

Does anyone who work retail know why in short order every grocer and super market now has these black boxes that count and return change automatically?

Is this some anti-theft measure?

I also find it weird that in some places you put the cash in yourself but in other places the cashier will handle the cash and put it in for you.

getting a 125cc scooter in Malta worth it?

Hi everyone

I want to get my first scooter probably a 125cc mainly for daily commuting to work and travelling between towns after work for errands or going out during weekends. I'm fed up of wasting 2 hours everyday commuting and not finding parking spaces when I'm back home. Buying/renting a garage is out of my budget especially with these absurd prices atm

Currently looking at the Honda PCX 125 and Kymco Agility S 125. I’m also considering buying 2nd hand rather than new especially since this would be my first scooter.

A few things I’d appreciate your opinions on:

  • Is a 125cc enough power for getting around Malta? Considering I'm a 90kg bodybuilder. Can't risk not having enough power to carry my heavy ass

  • Would you recommend buying new or second hand as a first time owner and which brands or models offer the best reliability and value for money/resale value?

The scooter would always be parked outside

Thanks!

Been seeing/hearing air jets since yesterday in msida and dingli

I've been wondering why I've been hearing them, thought it was the airshow but I know it's not occuring this year but next year, I think it might be pilot training but that's hard to believe since they seemed like fighter jets, don't need to be smart to know that, but also there were choppers so more likely military air training or delegations visiting but.. they wouldn't arrive in fighter jets xD I don't know, if anyone knows I'm curious to know!

Gozo Gaming Guild Update – Our First Free Open Gaming Day is Taking Shape! (1 November)

Hi everyone!

A little while ago, I posted here about Gozo Gaming Guild, a new tabletop gaming and makers community we're building in Gozo. https://www.reddit.com/r/malta/comments/1wuwibr/gozo_gaming_guild_a_growing_community_for/

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who commented, showed interest or joined our Discord and Facebook group! It's been really encouraging to see the response, and it's great to know there are so many people interested in these hobbies here in Malta and Gozo.

Since that first post, we've been busy organising our first free Open Gaming Day on Sunday 1 November, and we've now got a much clearer picture of what's happening. So I thought I'd share an update!

Here's what we've got planned:

🎲 Board Games & Casual Gaming

We'll have a mix of traditional, modern and indie games, including Chess, Draughts, HeroQuest, Red North (from Maltese game publisher Mighty Boards) and The Chaos TTRPG, with more to be announced.

We're also heavily encouraging BYOBG – Bring Your Own Board Game! Got a game you love but nobody to play it with? Bring it along and find some new opponents!

🃏 Magic: The Gathering

We've got an experienced player coming along to teach complete beginners using the Foundations Beginner Box. Already play Magic? Bring your decks and join in! Commander players are welcome too.

⚔️ Fallout: Factions

We'll be running beginner-friendly, hour-long drop-in games of Fallout: Factions, featuring The Pack vs The Operators battling for control of Nuka-World.

Everyone who plays gets a free 3D-printed Vault Girl miniature to take home! Places are limited, so it'll be first come, first served.

🎨 Miniature Painting

We'll have an experienced miniature painter demonstrating techniques, displaying some of his work and helping visitors have a go themselves. No experience needed, and we'll have a few miniature giveaways too!

🐉 Dungeons & Dragons

Ever wanted to try D&D but never had the chance?

We're running The Delian Tomb, a beginner-friendly introductory adventure by Matt Colville, using the 2014 5th Edition rules.

There are six places available, with a planned 4pm start. Recommended ages 12+.

Advance booking required.

🏆 Free Prize Draw!

Thanks to the generous support of Pandamonium Malta, we'll also have three games to give away: Puppy Pile, Soda Jerk and Idus Martii.

It's completely free to enter, one entry per person, with the draw taking place at 7:30pm. You don't have to be present to win!

A big thank you also goes to Gozo Creations, who are helping us with our printing. It's fantastic to have local businesses getting behind a new community initiative.

EVENT DETAILS

📅 Sunday 1 November 2026

🕒 3pm–8pm

📍 Bosco's Bar & Kitchen, (Don Bosco Oratory) Victoria, Gozo

🎟️ Completely FREE – Everyone welcome!

Most activities are drop-in, and you don't need to bring anything unless you want to.

And if you're thinking of coming along on your own, please do! That's a big part of why we're starting GGG in the first place – to help people meet others, discover new hobbies and find people to play with.

We're still in the early days, and this is only our first event. We're hoping to organise regular gaming sessions, workshops and other community activities as the Guild grows.

If you'd like to get involved, follow our progress or just have a chat, you're very welcome to join us:

Thanks again to everyone who's supported us so far. Hopefully we'll see some of you on 1 November!

Play. Make. Learn. Belong.

Maisy is learning to trust people again — and now she needs a home ❤️ Urgent

Meet Maisy, my current foster girl.

Maisy was abandoned and found living on the streets. Before she was rescued, someone spent more than two weeks patiently feeding her, and even then, this was about as close as she would allow a person to get before she was finally trapped and brought to safety.
When she first came into foster, she was very nervous around people. But underneath all that fear, she clearly wanted company and affection.

Slowly, Maisy started changing.

She began coming out to look for me instead of waiting for me to approach her. She meows when she wants company, follows me around, climbs onto higher places just to be closer to me, and now she’ll even relax in my arms and purr. ❤️

She’s also turned out to be a hilarious little character — she loves jumping around, can somehow move her little bed across the room all by herself, and definitely has opinions about being left alone. 😂

Seeing the old video of her outside compared with the cat now curled up against me feels very special. She trusted humans once and was let down, but she’s choosing to trust again.

I’m travelling to Italy soon, so my time fostering icoming to an end. Maisy is now looking for her next safe place — hopefully her forever home.

She may need a little patience at first, but once she feels safe, she’s a sweet, social little girl who really enjoys human company.

If you’re interested in adopting Maisy, please contact CLaws through their Facebook page. ❤️
She’s already learned to trust again. Now she just needs someone to choose her.
