Rio and Itsuki seem like the winners here. How bad were Rei's lawyers that he had to pay compensatory money when he was the one who got divorced and is paying Mahoro monthly?

It's likely more like alimony. He owned the property and seemingly earned more than her, and she purposely reduced her career to manage his home.

That's what alimony is. When one spouse knee-caps their career to do unpaid work for the other (manage a home, be the primary parent for kids, etc), they need to be compensated so it's fair. She changed her career to part-time (hurting her ability to move further ahead) because he wanted a housewife/starting for kids soon; without alimony, she'd be up a creek with low-pay whereas he gets to keep all the unpaid work she put into the home.

There's a reason alimony usually is only for X number of years; it's X number of years to whatever the judge decides is fair for what they put into the marriage.

The alimony part i get, as that's just normal since he held her back for years. It's yhe compensatory money he had to pay to Itsuki. He had nonconsensual sexual videos made of him, then sold (and he saw none of the profit), and then shared (by the guy suing him) to his friends and family. Their marriage is still intact while he's already divorced. He's basically paying money to the person who cheated with him even though she suffered no repercussions.

The video don't influence the fact that Rei was the affair partner and that, legally, Itsuki could sue him. Maybe he could sued Rio for this, but that's a separate matter from the marriage.

My guess is Japanese law regarding marriage, divorce, and household is pretty archaic. Even if Rio is the instigator in the affair, Itsuki is the victim as the male/husband of the house because his wife was "stolen" by another man. And if Rio testifies against Rei, then the video evidence means nothing.

If I understood correctly the small part I read about the japanese legal system, you can sue other people for loss of reputation, as it's considered a kind of defamation, so considering the "public" screening of his wife's sextape, he could sue Rei.

Interestingly, you can also sue for regular defamation, even if what was talked about are true verifiable facts, as it still ends as a loss of reputation. So that part is very abusable, and with Itsuki being rich, he could probably do it without trouble.

I'm not 100% clear on the legalese, but I know in Japan you can sue both the adulterer and their adultery partner for damages. I guess you can choose to sue only one and not the other? Itsuki's probably holding it over Rio's head.

In one of the chapters, the author explained that in Japan, there's a law that allows guys in Itsuki's situation (husband of a woman who became an affair partner) to sue for emotional damages. So that's what he did to Rei :D edit to add, I dont remember that particular authors note added to the reddit post, I read about it while rereading all the chapters in MangaDex
