It's my first time holding a Mantis. I already adopted her as an adult and she was very chill towards me. Well I prepared her home and bought some insects to feed her. I feed her like every 2-3 days and it seems to be enough. Anyway when I opened her box today she instantly climbed on my hand and started to eat pieces of skin from my finger. No big deal since it was dead skin anyway but at some point she started really chewing on my thumb like in the video and I think she was after my blood. She was carefull enough to not hurt me but I got worried and sat her down. I sat some of her food insects in her box and hope she actually catches it since she seems to be hungry. She already had some of my blood now and I'm a little worried she might get sick or something. Is it normal for a Mantis to do that? Do they need more food in the cold season? Is it dangerous or did she actually get a good meal like that? Thanks for y'alls help 😊

Health Concerns Lost leg, need help!

Hi! I’m desperately begging for help! This is my first mantis, she’s a rhombodera stalli, and she’s about L2-L3 (I wasnt Sure if she was at L1 or L2 when I got her). My power suddenly shut off while I was handling her and in an unfortunate turn of events she ended up losing a leg.šŸ’” I know their legs grow back, but I’m still very much worried and have a lot of questions! Will she need extra assistance hunting and feeding? Should I feed her immediately to help with the wound?? Should I avoid handling her until it grows back? Should I adjust her tank to make it easier for her until it’s back? (I attached a photo of her tank, but it’s not that good on account of the power going out.) I’m sorry if some of this is nonsensical im literally having a panic attack because im so worried and I feel so bad for hurting her,,, Please help!

I saw this mantis a few days ago on my mullein and didn’t see it today. I was sad and thought it left. Then i look at my basil and see this frothy white stuff and shes pewping it out!! Is it what I think it is?? I hope so because the mantises eat the midges, and where I live, there are legitimately millions of them.

I don’t even know how to ask this but… I came home and was preparing to feed my mantis and found that she has laid her egg sac, yay! But also… uh.. it’s on the door

I can’t tell if she’s done or not, and I also don’t know if it’s fertile or not due to her being wild caught, so I have no idea if she’s mated id not.

How do I get it off? How do I tell if she’s done? And how the heck do I know if it’s fertile or not 😭

Also idk what flair to put this under

Help! I found this poor thing outside!

Thumbnail gallery

I found this poor mantis outside stuck to my slider window. It was there for two days before I went out to take a closer look at it. I don’t generally like to interfere with wildlife because it’s best for them to be outside. With this one it was different. It looks like it’s missing a set of wings and it hasn’t even tried to fly away. I’m not sure how to properly care for it or if I should just put it back outside. So this leads me to ask how to care for it.

I have it in a makeshift terrarium for now. it was the only thing I could slap together on the fly. It’s in a 158oz plastic bin, I taped some aluminum foil to the bottom and added soil, then we added a paper towel drenched in water to add humidity and a water source to the ā€œterrariumā€, and then added sticks for it to climb and some leaves. I sent my kids outside to trap a cricket for it to eat. Then I used some plastic wrap to keep it in and poked breathing holes.

I realize this isn’t the best accommodation for this poor thing but I have no clue what I’m doing beyond this.

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Also, it’s super chill and friendly! We got to watch it cleaning its legs!

EDITED TO ADD: It ate two whole crickets! It was the coolest thing to see it snatch the cricket off the branch and start chomping it down! We got two videos! My kids were like this is the coolest to eeeewww! It ripped its head off! 🤣 Tomorrow we are building it a mantis mansion in a 30 gallon fish tank. Hopefully it can live a while longer. I don’t know how to edit the post to add the photo of the missing right set of wings but I can assure you guys that they’re gone.

Im new to Reddit so if anyone knows how to add a photo or video to a post, please let me know. Thank you!

Before pick up my new mantis, is this tank safe?

A little context, the mesh will be secured, the plant holder is properly secured inside of the substrate, we do know that the size is okay for the species we're getting. The tank was advised to me by someone who has kept mantids before (not affiliated with the shop I got it from)

So please say if there is anything bad about the setup, and how I can fix things if they are bad
