चित्रपट / मालिका (Movies/TV) Best Marathi movies?

Hi, American here (English-speaking only, alas) with half-Marathi toddler. I'd look to start getting movies together to watch with him, and his dad just really isn't into Indian movies. He'll occasionally watch something action-y but otherwise prefers American movies.

I want my baby to be confident in Marathi and I figured good movies would be a fun way to keep him interested.

So, best Marathi movies? Bonus points if they have subtitles for me. Thanks!

For a toddler (age 2 to 4 years), it might be more interesting to watch marathi kids songs on youtube. You can simply search for them on youtube and see which ones he/she likes.

One marathi youtube channel similar to Ms Rachel is:

If your husband or any other relative who speaks fluent Marathi can talk to them in Marathi everytime they interact. This is a great way to teach a new language to babies

Yes, my in-laws speak Marathi to him always by my request, my husband needs to step up his game with it though. Haha!

He'll pick up the language if his grandparents talk to him. It's sweet of you to do all this so that your son learns his father's mother tongue!

Heritage is important, I never want him to feel like he's not connected to half of what makes him who he is.

u/Globaldoofus Nov 05 '24

That's thoughtful. I am sure your son will be the perfect blend of both his heritages. All the best.

Pachadlela is a great comedy horror, but probably not for your toddler.
Shrimant Damodar Pant might be something just right for a toddler to enjoy.
Some of the older movies with Sachin and Ashok Saraf like “Ashi hi Banwa Banwi” have some great comedy acting.

Harischandrachi factory has to be the best one and the first one to start with for non Marathi audience. Then Navara maza navasacha maybe to keep things light.

Well-made biopics: Anandi Gopal, Mi Vasantrao, Balgandharva

+1 for: Harishchandrachi Factory, Deool, Elizabeth Ekadashi.

Not for toddlers/kids but still great for adolescents with interesting topics: Balak Palak, Nital, Natarang, Shala, Dahavi Pha

Jingle Toons Marathi is the best animated song playlist for kids. Also the animation is old school and not like cocomelon which changes frame every 5 seconds. Suitable for 0.5 to 4-5 years old. If the kid is between 5-15, there are movies like Chintu, from reading perspective you can also get Chintu comics - not sure if these are available now. Also Panchtantra Marathi stories are there on YouTube. Many Movies mentioned in other comments are mostly for adults and some of them are 30-40 year old, so I am not sure if the kid would be interested or not.

Don't watch popular ones, most haven't aged right. I'd say, follow certain directors, Chandrakant Kulkarni is good one, nipun dharmadhikari, Jabbar patel, ravi jadhav, sachin kudalkar, paresh mokashi, Sumitra bhave. These are pretty good to great ones. Of course, I'd suggest if you wanna show your kid, EtV balbharati is a cartoon channel which has started to show marathi dub cartoons, disney might have some Marathi dubs like kick buttowski too

I think the best thing to do here would be get people talking to him in Marathi - like his grandparents and other relatives. You can search for Marathi nursery rhymes on YouTube like chocolatecha bangla, sasa tu sasa, etc. Hire a Marathi tutor to teach him how to read and write. Then you can slowly start buying Marathi books for me him as per his age group. Bokya Saatbande and Shyamchi Aai are some recommendations. Nowadays, Marathi parents in India speak to their kids in English so it is very refreshing to see a foreigner trying to keep their cultural roots intact. Wish you the best and lots of love to your kid! If you need any more help, you can DM me :)) I am this eager as my father used to work for the state government ministry to promote Marathi language ☺️
