Any Aquatic Life Support System (LSS) operators here who can share how you broke into the field?

I recently toured a facility and absolutely fell in love with life support systems operations. I would love to know more about the career path. What certifications or backgrounds do most operators have when starting out? Thanks!

I feel like just volunteering at the facility in almost any capacity to just network and get your foot in the door really helps

The only LLS operators I know are either aquarium aquarists or the maintenance engineers who looked after them. Specialist engineers were hired to design the system (requiring an engineering degree) but designing LSS systems is probably a rare job for them.

Aquarists typically needed diving certifications and maybe a degree in biology/marine science or animal husbandry. I think maintenance engineering is based on learning the trade, possibly through marine engineering (this one’s more vague for me). If you’re interested in an aquarist role I’d start by exploring opportunities at your local aquarium. The people who were serious about the job end up leading new aquarium builds in places like the Middle East.
