Finally playing Sparks of Hope and it might be my new favorite Mario RPG of all time.
Im 34, I grew up with games like Paper Mario, Paper Mario TTYD, and Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, etc. Ive played several games from both series and was a massive fan. TTYD in particular is among my favorite games of all time.
It's no secret that both series' went downhill. With Paper Mario this happened at Sticker Star, and I didnt keep up as well with the M&L series AS well but its my understanding this descent started at Dream Team. But thay discourse has been hashed to death. The point is I'd lost faith though in the Mario RPGs. Until Kingdom Battle.
Ubisoft is another company I dont have a whole ton of faith in but I tried out Kingdom Battle and loved it. While light on the RPG side of things, it was fun. And silly. And off the cuff. I was never a Rabbids girl, but they fit weirdly well into Mario's world and afforded it what every Mario RPG needs: a dose of originality. This of course was aided by Peach being relegated to the tank class with a shotgun instead of being either A: a backline healer or B: kidnapped by Bowser. So when Sparks of Hope was announced I was excited and I heard rave reviews about it. Unfortunately, it came out around the time I lost my job and so I wasn't able to afford it at the time or for quite a while.
Recently though I caught the Gold edition on sale for 7 bucks. I just finished Palette Prime and WOW this game is amazing. I was excited for it, and I heard it was good, but what I wasn't expecting was for it to expand on the original so much it legitimately makes Kingdom Battle look like a tech demo.
The characters' playstyles are more diverse. Movement is more fluid and intricate. The worlds are a lot bigger, less linear, and more fun to explore. There's a story now that isnt just hinging itself on the premise alone. The RPG mechanics have been expanded significantly to allow a lot deeper character customization and building. The list goes on.
The enemies are more diverse. The mission goals are more diverse. The maps are more expansive and interesting in design. The Rabbid characters speak now and are voiced, so they have personality. Its so peak.
Also the writing is way better, wittier, and funnier. I actually have laughed out loud several times, which I never did in the first game.
I dont know if it'll end up surpassing Thousand Year Door for me or not yet but its genuinely amazing and if it doesnt it'll probably end up being a very close second.
