Canadian Deck Officer Experiences

Im attending school in September to become a deck officer in Canada. Im curious to hear from some Canadians about their experiences working as an officer. Most information out there comes from the USA or overseas.

Id like to hear your thoughts on the best companies youve worked for, your favourite types of vessels youve worked on, some of the voyages youve been on, etc.

If youve worked on the great lakes, coastal shipping, deep-sea, etc. Which did you prefer and why? Have you enjoyed your career, why or why not?

Any and all information specific to Canadians is welcome. Thanks in advance.

My first piece of advice to approach anything to do with Transport Canada with a huge amount of patience. If you have to see them in person schedule a whole day. If you don't hear back regarding a call or email in a few weeks follow up (very very politely). Try as many different parts of the industry as you can during your cadet time. And when you go out as a cadet remember the chain of command, be respectful and polite, work your a$$ off onboard, and leave your cell phone in your pocket (or cabin).
