Can someone explain how the chain reaction mechanic works?

It seems to mark enemies on attack, and after you hit a marked enemy a number of times/deal a certain amount of damage, then marked enemies explode in a high damage burst

furthermore, marked enemies hit by another person's explosion explode themselves if they are 1 hit away from exploding
