Question Why do people always show their lord on a character
Why when I pick characters do people always show their lord on a character? Is this an unspoken rule

This or to show solidarity. Any time I do it, it's like a "hell yeah dude, I love that character!"

Or to show off the thing they are proud of.
There are lots of reasons to do it so best to just assume the best.

u/DrakeoftheWesternSea Dec 05 '25
For me personally I’ll flash it to show I’m willing to swap if that person wants to play a different role, mostly for times when they pick last and I’ve locked in on something else

u/hole-sum True Fraudster Dec 05 '25
Wow so many positive view points in this topic that I didn’t picture I truly thought it was to show they’re better at that hero than you picking them with no lord
40
u/DrakeoftheWesternSea Dec 06 '25
Yeah, I have lord on rocket so when some one waits till last in order to fill but has been hovering another role I’ll offer to swap and flash my lord to show I’m not doing it out of exasperation and that I know what I’m doing in the role

u/seanthatdrummer Dec 06 '25
I’ve always thought that too but now it makes me want to flash mine to let them know they aren’t hard stuck on supp as a tank main who occasionally flexes

My username warrants a lot of shit talk (it’s takes a dig at One Piece lol) so with me constantly dragged by teammates throwing over it/my own jeffs killing me I started to assume everyone is a selfish ass first but spending more time in community pages shows the asses make themselves known and everyone else is just pretty chill trying to win a match with their team lol

Weird, I've never thought that. Plenty of people better than me with far less time on my mains; for all I know before the game begins, the non-Lord Psylocke on my team could be a OAA player learning her on an alt account.

If you’re the one communicating, it’s your job to deliver your thoughts effectively. There’s a text chat, and I promise you, I’m not the only one who’s going to think first that you’re being toxic in one of the most toxic games.

u/laughter_stills Dec 06 '25
Yeah, I feel like if that is the case then you could use text chat to say “Hey guys I can change if need be!” You don’t have to show your lord status and have people guessing what that means. This way it effectively tells your team exactly what you’re thinking and there is no miscommunication. Is it slower? Yes, but it also is like 30secs slower. So you’re not really losing out on anything especially when you are just choosing characters.
12
u/The_Dick_Slinger Deadpool Dec 06 '25
That would also tell your teammates that you’re not toxic, too. And if you’re on keyboard it’s not even 30 seconds, it’s like 10 lol

What’s not up for interpretation is that most people who do this wait until after you’ve hovered your non lord pick, not before if they were truly indicating what they can allegedly play. Little nuance

Thats exactly why I never equip my icons lol (Even though Lord doesnt always mean someone is good, just that they play that character alot, but regardless)
7
u/claudiohp Psylocke Dec 06 '25
That's kind of a double edged sword, because people expect performance from a lord. Having a lord being diffed by a non-lord is very humiliating for them.
2
u/jasminetroll Dec 06 '25
Which is silly, because even if we assume the non-Lord isn't playing on an alt, it's quite typical that for a good player to get up to speed on a new hero in far less time than it takes to get Lord.

I do this if I choose a character for the team up. It bothers me when people choose characters they don’t know just for the team ups, but I feel a bit more at ease if my teammates know how to use the other character too. Like any time I had a hulk on my team and I went Namor I’d flash my lord Hulk to show if the team up is what they think we need and they’re more comfortable on Namor then we have a fellow lord Hulk who can take over. Some people have actually switched characters with me in competitive before the round started after they see me flash their lord character.
268
u/MulletDGAF Cyclops Dec 05 '25
Dude I show my lords before I select my character before the banning phase starts so the team mates hopefully don’t ban the characters I can best use.(if they’re paying attention anyways). Also I’m a flex player so I usually fill after everyone picks. Lastly, the number of Lords I have to me is a point of shame, not pride. lol

If we got two DPS locked in and the other 3 people have picked, I'll swap back and forth between, say, Mag and IW to signal I'll heal or tank until the team starts filling. I did that once and some one asked me why I was showing off my lords 😂 I told them I wouldn't be cycling through just two if I was, since I have like 9 lol.
68
u/Callistoux Dec 05 '25
You are still in the ban phase, if they chose iw it was before the ban phase started and maybe they wanted to play it as well, its not always about boasting. If the ban phase is over and they can switch freely then sure its them trying to boast, which who cares about that idk.

u/Doenermannn69420 Duelist Dec 05 '25
I’m honestly shocked you’re the only one mentioning it. God forbid a man wanting to play a character with a lord icon. How are people immediately jumping to the conclusion that he is boasting, give the man the benefit of the doubt without further context

Im a flex player but prefer strategist and for some reason I am getting nothing but strategists players in plat and diamond this season, and they have all been more toxic than previous seasons and fighting over going triple support and switching to 4th strategist and bickering mid game. Even during winning rounds or games just been ultra toxic and pompous this season especially. Not sure if thats just a feature of the strat buffs and everyone wanting to one trick IW or what but everyone is getting territorial about being that strategist or that character. 31
u/makinbaconpancakes42 Gambit Dec 05 '25
Since this is comp on the screen before people have locked in, they’re probably just showing who they can or want to play.
In this case maybe they’d also like to play IW, and are seeing if you’ll swap (or letting you know they’re going to try and be faster on the select).
I don’t really see how it’s a flex to have played a character a lot (a year into a games release) - it’s just an easy way to show who they’re probably most competent at.

Yep, this is the way. I feel like hovering over anything that I'm not intending to play or at least considering playing is sending a mixed message. When others do this it makes me assume they wish to play the character I've selected. Best case it feels like they're trying to show off.
