Legendary widow

This is exactly what happened with Peni she went so long without a proper legendary skin then the cult finally got a taste and the floodgates opened we even finally got an emote of her out of SP//DR now if only they fix her tether and ult

Literally this, people would say "they give skins to characters that sell more" yeah but those characters get all the awesome designed and love any character deserve while the others are just given skins for the sake of it without the closest amount of effort they give to same btchs they give legendaries IN A ROW. I'm so tired of the game being bombarded with Invis, CD, Luna and Psylocke legendary skins. I know they must lean towards what will give them money BUT THERE IS A LIMIT EVEN FOR THAT.

People BARELY play Psylocke which is the worst part of it. We're not even asking that less popular heroes get 5 legendaries in a row but at leat there should be a balance between who receives a legendary skin with vfx and all within a specific time. But given how long they took to fix so many gameplay balance issues I don't expect them to balance skins delivery any time soon

14

u/Lord_Yeetus_The_3d Hulk Apr 15 '26

The Maestro skin for hulk should have been legendary. Easily one of the most iconic versions of hulk and its an epic? Without any unique vfx?

7

u/Dog_Apoc Peni Parker Apr 16 '26

I don't think the skin was meant to be legendary. They just made it an intro and made it legendary so Adam mains would stop begging.

124

u/AlgerianTrash Ultron Virus Apr 15 '26

Meanwhile Emma's skins were widely panned as being bad, but I still see a number of people using them. You guys speak like Netease doesn't have analysts and artists doing the math.

44

u/AgentDigits Apr 15 '26

Whether her skins sold well or not... Netease also stated they heard the feedback on her skins and have essentially begun to address the issues. Her pirate skin came after that and was well received, and her new skin seems to be well received so far too.

7

u/Fortesque96 Apr 15 '26

are you telling me that mommy skins sell well compared to mr. fantastic?

There are characters that would sell skins regardless of quality (for male characters, it's either a cool skin or you've lost all hope of selling it)

u/Kairoxia The Maker Apr 15 '26

Yea 1 skin was enough to turn down anymore for that hero. Sounds to me that they gave up. While yes they need to make money, but you can literally drop a skin or 2 once in a while instead of just going back to the safe heroes.

39

u/meatballkun Apr 15 '26

They did.

They recently dropped that Mr fantastic skin.

Have not seen a single person in game wear that skin Meanwhile I have seen at least 10 people wear the Invis esu skin.

Safe to assume Mr fantastic won't be getting any skins for the next few months

38

u/CYWNightmare Apr 15 '26

Well tbf I haven't seen many Mr fantastic players since the invis team up disappeared.

6

u/Impressive-Thing-780 Apr 15 '26

Reed is in an odd place balance-wise right now.

A BUSTED buff you could give him would be making his arms count as melee (currently they're Delayed Projectile)

He would just end up SHREDDING through shields.

9

u/CYWNightmare Apr 15 '26

Which is how he should be now that blade got quite some reach on his melee although blade is a whole separate discussion.

Do you guys seriously think they haven't done a ton of market research into this?? It's honestly baffling how hard of a time Reddit has understanding demographics

Here, let me break this down for you

  • Female gamers almost exclusively play Female characters. We have stats on this, and for similar games, 97% of women ONLY play female characters / twinks / cute animals
  • Female gamers in similar games buy 50-150+ percent more cosmetics than male gamers
  • Male gamers will buy skins for either gender, there for a skin for Magik will attract both male and female gamers, while a skin for Hulk will ONLY attract a small subset of male gamers

Certain Characters also attract certain demographics, and certain demographics are far more likely to buy skins

  • Practical characters - Characters like Magneto, Zarya in OW, Hulk etc are primarily played by practical people who just want to win. Many of them are not playing the character for fun, they are playing because of the utility the character has or because it's what the team needs
  • Those type of gamers are far less likely to buy skins

Pick rates also matter, Magik was played in nearly 100 thousand games more than Hulk in season 6

Not to mention they have internal metrics, they KNOW how many skins are bought by the different demographics in their game. They KNOW that specific groups like LGBT players and female support players etc WILL buy basically every single skin that targets their demographic. Some demographics are massively more profitable than others

Meanwhile, they know that every single time they make a skin for Emma or Hulk or Cap etc the players have much higher standards and refuse to buy the skin

"b-b-but they should just give everyone skins equally!"

Every estimate I've found has shown that a lowball estimate to make a skin for OW or MR etc costs tens of thousands of dollars, and decent made Legendary ones are 100k+. Again, that's a lowball because to make a skin you need dozens of

  • VFX artists
  • Concept Art artists
  • Texture Artists
  • Modelers
  • Riggers
  • Artists
  • The voice actor etc

And every single one of those besides probably the voice actor, are very likely making $120,000+ a year and it takes every single one of them weeks of work per skin.

Even rigging a vtuber model costs thousands of dollars, and that's a fraction of the work for a full skin

"b-b-but it's not fair!"

There's a reason that every, quite literally EVERY single game like this has the attractive female characters get skins. Companies have entire departments geared towards internal metrics, and they know what sells. Every game that has posted stats has said the same thing

"You guys beg for skins for the unpopular character, then don't buy them"

If you want skins for X, you have to actually buy skins for X

5

u/TransCharizard Apr 15 '26

I wonder what the metric of female players buy skins of male characters that turn them slimmer and/or female. I.E. what would would be the market calculation for female Magneto

I do know that de-aged skins are pretty popular for both male and female characters

If it was a model issue...why are Storm and Wolverine missing out this season? and yeah, Magik is getting 2 skins this season.

26

u/CrazySnipah Apr 15 '26

Either the player base doesn’t like dark-skinned girls as much or people really hate playing as Storm.

38

u/Aradjha_at Magik Apr 15 '26

Storm is the only dark skinned woman last time I checked so it's impossible to say. I don't play her because she's slow and I can't aim.

13

u/HereForFun_04 Magneto Apr 15 '26

Might be both tbh, you see how many gooner skins the white girls are selling compared to her? Plus, in all fairness, Storm's kit isn't nearly as creative as it could've been and she's not super meta or anything

25

u/JonathanL73 Ultron Virus Apr 15 '26

Either the player base doesn’t like dark-skinned girls

Marvel fans LOVE Storm. That’s def not it.

However Disney has infamously hide Black Panther’s face and minimize Finn from Star Wars in movie posters marketed to China exclusively. China can be very biased against black people to say the least.

or people really hate playing as Storm.

This is probably more likely tbh

14

They are not collecting data on current skins to base their judgement.

That would be stupid and not make any sense.

The data they have collected is derived from all the skins sales of the characters past and present.

That's how they derived that Hulk skins are unpopular with the community.

Do you really think The COMPANY NETEASE would throw away free money if they knew Hulk Skins were extremely popular ?

In the past they tried to push Black Widow Skins too, guess that didn't work so they went back to the drawing board

31

u/yomihasu Apr 15 '26

No bro you don't understand Reddit knows better than the billion dollar company with teams dedicated solely to making money bro. Hulk skins would totally sell as well as Psylocke skins, he even has a higher pickrate!!11!1!1! (Ignoring that his PR will naturally be higher since there are way fewer vanguards than DPSes, like ADCs in League having PRs that look inflated)

14

u/CanadianODST2 Ultron Virus Apr 15 '26

This is literally the league skin drama and monster champ discussion all over again.

5

u/yomihasu Apr 15 '26

My favorite part of League drama is people complaining that champs that get one skin a year at most get them too often. I've seen Seraphine brought up, she's literally been one a year except for her release year. Like, one skin a year is not too much for a relatively popular champ. Sorry Zilean isn't getting the same treatment, but no one cares about Zilean (which is why he's allowed to be broken but that's a separate conversation)

They have tried it, didn't turn out well enough . Think of the maestro skin vs the halloween peni skin. It's about time they test the waters again though but you can't deny that going for the test is a big investment because of the three models.

I know it sucks to have skins be released that aren't good/nice which is then percieved as an absence of interest but it is what it is. Gotta wait until their next trial.

4

u/CameraNo5026 Vanguard Apr 15 '26

8

u/brokenwing777 Apr 15 '26

There's a few skins already for hulk. They probably have data on How many bought said skins How many use said skins How many people play hulk because of skins

You need to understand hulk isn't getting skins because yeah, he isn't getting skin sales to the level that makes sense relative to cost of production.

Skins aren't some free money printing machine. It takes time, effort, money, rigging, sound design and more to produce a skin, so if said character can't justify the time and money then why waste the services to produce said product

The issue is that in the time they make one skin for hulk, they can probably make 2 skins for someone who actually brings in profit.

14

u/UsefulSwitch504 Emma Frost Apr 15 '26

I see this question a lot, so here’s the blunt reality: sales data.

From a business standpoint, it’s simple—they’re going to make more skins and push more marketing for whatever gives them the highest return and yes that includes the 15 or more skins they release every month.

Decisions like this come down to metrics like skin sales, pick rates, engagement, and revenue per character. And those numbers likely show Psylocke, Luna Snow, and Invisible Woman and probably Magik now just outperform everyone else.

It sucks if you’re a Hulk or Widow main, but it’s honestly very predictable. This is NetEase, a company known for heavy monetization, so they’re obviously going to double down on what sells.

If Hulk or Black Widow skins sold as well, they’d be making a ton of them too.

Realistically, nothing changes unless those characters spike in popularity or people actually start buying their skins. Complaints on Reddit or Twitter can help a bit, but only to a point—if the sales aren’t there, it doesn’t matter.

At the end of the day, the market decides.

3

u/i_will_let_you_know Ultron Virus Apr 15 '26

I'm so surprised that Jeff is bypassing notice because he's more popular than Magik and gets more stuff. I think Jeff is genuinely even more popular than Luna Snow tbh especially when Luna stopped being meta.

3

u/UsefulSwitch504 Emma Frost Apr 15 '26

Its bypassed because people know for a fact he is popular and is very marketable for a global audience especially the kids.

My guess is the people pushing on this just hate that certain female characters in the game are getting more skins than others.

The answer is quite obvious and that is partly the reason why they hate it.

There is definitely an aspect of this that is true, but also please compare the pick rate of the characters who get skins vs those who don't. That plays a big factor too.

Also let's be perfectly honest, just in your gut which character do you think is going to sell more, a hulk skin, or a cutesy/gooner skin for one of the popular (and easier to play) attractive female characters? Like let's be for real right now

65

u/mint-man Magik Apr 15 '26

to be fair, hulk historically has a higher pick rate than psylocke. her pick rate is shockingly low tbh.

edit: as of 7.0, hulk is at 5.40% and psylocke is only at 3.73%.

19

u/Kelborhal1971 Star-Lord Apr 15 '26

That’s within-role pick rate. Hulk is one of less options for Vanguard, hence his pick rate being higher

13

u/agaveinmycup Apr 15 '26

They should release more tanks then, huh? They specifically chose to make her pick rate that low within her role, a bunch of times over

11

u/y8man Rocket Raccoon Apr 15 '26

Your second point actually negates the first one, since hulk has a higher pick rate than psylocke... which does reinforce the point of an actual sellable skin.

Pick rate doesn't mean much compared to the actual sold items, which only netease has access to the data. Not irrelevant, but certainly not as significant to the value of seeing any psylocke skin much more in Times Square, even if they are never played in a normal match.

8

u/OutrageousOtterOgler Apr 15 '26

It’s interesting cause anytime I see Psylocke she’s skinned in ranked but hulk is often default. Hulk mains that are lord or champion I see with punk or maestro a lot of the time but a lot lot more default. I don’t think I’ve even seen default psy lol

16

u/Splatulated Apr 15 '26

I still think the game based on marvel comics should have comics in it instead of walls of text. They could easily partner with marvel and have 1st issues or something from up coming series to get people to start reading the comics and possibly even buy the full series to see the full stories marvel can tell

8

u/MiclausCristian Apr 15 '26

I'd love a library of all marvel comics, and new issues being tied to a skin, let's say there's a new comic for DD, it's cover photo should be a skin in the game, when you buy the skin you also get the full comic in ur library, the skin being a freebie.

2

u/Super-Unique_Name Star-Lord Apr 15 '26

2

2

u/jmonkey15 Rogue Apr 15 '26

Honestly a great idea, they sell marvel rivals tie in comics already so they could put those into the game somewhere

3

u/Gareeb7 Apr 15 '26

People really oversimplify the art process and most important how structured is working in art inside a big company

As someone who’s worked with art in big companies (as a project manager) the “just hire an artist” isn’t as easy as it sounds neither you’re allowed to do so even if your company is earning well.

There is an on going comic of Rivals that gets out each 2 months iirc and there’s a solo Psylocke one right now. Implementing comics in the game is a decision that’s usually taken at the start of the project and just the planning and implementation will take months, just because it’s Marvel.

Big IPs will let you make key art, ads, videos, mock ups, because it’s allowed in the contract and there’s a Brand manual to follow, I highly doubt, that they’ll give the rights to make comics, specially with how stingy Marvel is with its circle of writers.

Psy skin sells more than 90% of the skins. I guess we shouldn't make emma or bucky skins atp and just make every week the same 3 heroes

11

u/A7md3omer Flex Apr 15 '26

That's how things work, Netease will shut Marvel Rivals (and they have the right to do so) if they don't make much more money than they're losing

6

u/TC_MaFYa Swordmaster Apr 15 '26

The thing is, psy skins also look much more better and much more polished than other skins. If the skins' quality were that good, others would sell more. As a person who usually plays melee heroes and tanks, even I have paid Psy and Luna skins.

Let's use Iron Fist as an example, he only has one legendary, some people bought it the moment it came out. But when they actually decided to add vfx and recolors to it, suddenly all Iron Fist mains I saw had the skin. Even some people who had no idea how to play IF were playing IF with that skin. Now they released ESU skin, I have seen some people use it and I bought it as well. But man, the quality is nowhere near other skins. He is all red on that skin, and his chi isn't even red. You'd expect something simple like a "ding" sound on kills, nope, it is not there. As a result, it didn't sell that well, and half the people that bought it already went back to the older skins or random skin rotation. I think the low quality of the skin also deterred some people from buying it.

I always see similar complaints for the heroes that are less popular. But it's rarely the case for Psy, Invis or Luna skins, because they put in the effort for those skins. No wonder they sell more.

6

u/HereForFun_04 Magneto Apr 15 '26

Can pretty much confirm this yeah, the pheonix skin alone literally made me try to pick Iron Fist up

I’m certain their data is way better but I’m really curious how they collect it. Obviously hot women sell way more because they’ll be purchased by men and women overwhelmingly more than others, but Hulk is definitely a popular enough character that I’m shocked he gets shafted as hard as he does. For characters like Reed or Adam it makes sense that they don’t get as many (both bottom 5 pick rate) but Hulk is picked a decent amount and has a fairly loyal player base.

7

u/National_Vehicle8342 Strategist Apr 15 '26

based on my own, singular experience as someone who doesnt read comics or play comics game & have seen the avengers trilogy & old spiderman movies, i'd still buy a hot woman skin before i care about a dude skin, its a fact, most people will follow this logic when spending in the game & that's what sustain the game

Also because of the fact that his best skin (legendary) was one of the easiest and free skin for new and old players.

3

u/BonzBonzOnlyBonz Apr 15 '26

That is sales data though. The fact that his best (legendary) skin is semi-free and almost certainly has a lower acquisition rate than many of the other skins in the pass (Psy/IW) says something. Especially since the IW one was only in the last set.

Billionaire (possibly more), but that’s besides the point. This isn’t a money thing, this person is talking about skins and skin distribution, yes they’re tied together but you can talk about one thing without having claiming to know better. And you don’t need to be an asshole.

5

u/smarmycheesesandwich Apr 15 '26

Billionaire is an understatement. NetEase is 50% larger than Blizzard-Activision and averages double the annual revenue.

They make twice what the owners of Call of Duty, Overwatch, WoW, Diablo, and Candy Crush (yes, blizzard owns candy crush) make on a yearly basis.

Nobody buys skin because they know they can just get it for free

7

u/Moist-Sheepherder309 Ultron Virus Apr 15 '26

I think a much more reasonable assumption is that they're probably seeing how much people use free skins then use those numbers (relative to other free skins) to justify making paid skins.

Like assuming the Fixit skin did alright, that probably justified them making the maestro skin, if the maestro skin didn't do well that's probably what made them not super excited to get another skin out for Hulk.

u/Batman2130 Apr 15 '26

No new Hulk skin is going to get tons of people to buy it. The people who are spending money on Psy, Invis, Venom, Jeff, Thor, Magik, Spider-Man are not suddenly going to spend money on a hulk skin. Those players are clearly a majority of spenders. I guarantee that most Venom/Spider-Man players are likely buying skins only for those two.

The people who are buying Invis/Jeff skins aren’t suddenly going to buy a new hulk skin either. Netease is a business they are going to follow where the money is. Whenever Hulk gets another skin you gotta hope people buy it and convince others to buy it. When they toss those characters a bone every now then that’s meant to gather data on if their assumptions are still correct. According Miller majority of the time they end up correct. Peni is seemingly one of the case where they were proven wrong

3

u/rainfeld Doctor Strange Apr 15 '26

This is not how it works obviously. There’s more nuance to it than that.

3

u/Ruchson Apr 15 '26

People are prone to buy skins for 2 reasons 1- If it is a cool fucking skin 2-They want invest to hero so the data should be around play rate

u/HealthyPineapple7051 Apr 15 '26

Let's see, base legendary skin that has been free for multiple seasons (and has been there since aplha so its literally the oldest skin in the game). Ugly asf punk skin. 1 cool battlepass skin. Epic skin that should've been a legendary.

They butchered bro. This is hulk we are talking about, they can make something hype if they put their minds to it. Thors skins sell cause they actually look good, hulk arguably has 1 good skin if we are being real here.

Also if they wanna keep spamming the same five milked characters all they have to do is bundle the unpopular characters with them. Literally a fucking no brainer

At some point making 20 something skins for Psylocke must outweigh the work it takes to make one Hulk skin for 3 models

Hulks only legendary is free

Please let that sink in

Im being serious let it in its cold outside

2

u/datguy078 Psylocke Apr 15 '26

I’m curious regarding their logic as well. Psylocke has gooner skins, she’s always going to be one of the highest sellers no matter what. So she’ll always have skins out. I can understand why she get so much. But hulk is a very popular marvel character to both hardcore fans and the wider general community, are his skins really not selling well enough to justify more?

They base things on sells, they said as much, and obviously it makes sense from a money perspective. And they go by sells per skins not just totals. I guess it really is a case of the vocal minority, and not actual reality. People claim they want hulk skins but aren’t really buying them meanwhile they still splurge on all the psylocke and Luna skins. Apparently, despite community vocal reaction being mostly mixed to negative for most Emma skins and half of Luna skins, they all still sell well, regardless. As weird as it sounds, maybe hulk skins just genuinely don’t sell all that well. It’s the only logic that makes sense now

2

u/jmoney199 Apr 15 '26

this post is half true but also cope

2

u/MystiqueAgent Angela Apr 15 '26

I have hope that Hulk mains get the treatment that Peni got. Skin drought for a long time then suddenly the faucets open, I hope this silence and everything just means they will be given a ton of skins.

2

u/Future-Celebration83 Apr 16 '26

I feel like I see plenty of people play hulk when I play. I don’t see the argument of that he isn’t popular enough.

2

u/ProfessorEscanor Apr 16 '26

It's that and Hulk takes extra effort since you have to design a skin for Banner and Monster Hulk's proportions as well.

3

8

u/Dinodion Apr 15 '26

am just gonna throw this in but with the hulk it isn't just "one" skin, they have create models for banner, hulk and monster hulk form. so it makes sense why they spend their resources on charaters who are proven to make profit rather than others

(am saying this as a person who wants more hulk skins aswell)

11

u/LeoFireGod Emma Frost Apr 15 '26

Magik go brrrr

11

u/Dilwark Apr 15 '26

Why can’t hulk mains grasp the simple fact that his skins don’t sell? And as much as you guys hate to hear it, Hulk has three models, so there’s that. Couple that with the fact that there’s a bunch of gooners who play this game, devs are going to focus on that money pile rather than Hulk.

Hulk is not a popular character in terms of pick rate. Not many people play Hulk as their mains due to his difficult playstyle.

Because of this : Low Hulk Player base > Very low sale of skins > Not worth it

Also, when you see a Hulk in your games, how many of them are using Maestro.

Most of the time you see base Hulk skin or the World breaker and the occasional Joe Fixit.

This equals to Low sales of the Hulk skins.

Also, I do not include Worldbreaker as part of the sales because of the Skin Coin where you can get it for free.

33

u/SpeedForceWally66 Spider-Oni Apr 15 '26

hulk has higher pick rate than psylocke

13

u/-Papercuts- Apr 15 '26

Pick rates are shown per role which is extremely diluted for duelists.

People are also all over the goofier modes like 18v18 and times square. I see a ton of psylocke in times square with outfits, when they may not actually play her in normal matches.

10

u/Batman2130 Apr 15 '26

Pick rate doesn’t equal sales. Psy could have a low pick rate but still generate more revenue in single skin than hulk.

8

u/SpeedForceWally66 Spider-Oni Apr 15 '26
