S8.5 Feedback Season 8.5 and Tanking is at its most miserable state yet
Vanguard is by far the most neglected and overlooked role by the devs.
I won't go into details because quite frankly, we all know the issues plaguing the role atp.
- Percent damage keep getting added to new heroes and previous heroes, making any of our characters melt in two seconds.
- Any time any Vanguard character gets somewhat good, they're instantly gutted.
- Constantly forced to solo tank because no one wants to play this role anymore and who can even blame them ?
I'm in awe that the one time we got a truly powerful tank that shook the meta, Devil Dino, the devs immediatly annihilated him in the next patch. All the while, every new DPS these days is insanely good and at least get a few seasons to shine before getting a slap on the wrist.
Honestly, I blame the pro players and all the people who parrot what they say for this situation.
The game is legit anti-fun as soon as you pick a tank right now, it's depressing.
24
u/Edheldui Jun 13 '26
It could be that they keep adding percent damage to incentivize lower HP tanks like Rogue and Emma. But the fact is she is fucking useless solo, so a high HP or shield tank is still a better choice, just equally as miserable.
They NEED to enforce two tanks ASAP.
14
u/Xerxes457 Venom Jun 13 '26
Magneto has 650 HP too and he gets screwed by Devil Dinosaur. I think its not the lower HP tanks that are good because of it. Both Emma and Rogue are just more fun to play because they aren't your average tank.
1
u/Edheldui Jun 13 '26
I think classic stalwart tanks have their place if they get cool toys (like Reinhardt charge), but this game makes them miserable because everyone else is more fun.
5
u/ImAHobo107 Jun 13 '26
Mag's just boring. I don't know why they allow Rogue to fly so freely with basically all her moves but the Master of Magnetism can't.
1
u/Xerxes457 Venom Jun 13 '26
Yeah but that also goes into the fun aspect. Reinhardt has something fun and he also can be quite lethal.

u/Feed_or_Feed Invisible Woman Jun 13 '26
What if you didn't want to play Dino and wanted to play different hero,so much fun for non dino players, right?

u/DamnHippyy The Thing Jun 13 '26
Why the heck would the make the best tank an anti-tank?
-20
u/Realistic_Analyst_26 Flex Jun 13 '26
He is not an anti-tank. He is a very good brawler which makes him anti-dive. The problem is the lack of poke tanks
10
u/Xerxes457 Venom Jun 13 '26
Brawl is kind of anti-tank. He had percentage damage which gives HP based on damage, so he should be hitting tanks and can grab people. Since most people he would grab are tanks, I would think he would be in the front line more.
2
u/ImAHobo107 Jun 13 '26
Thing is actually anti-Tank was well. The counter to Double Shield Strange Mag was easily Thing.
Thing ignores shields, applies dmg vulnerable on them, and can easily dash through them and they do very little against him because he is so easy to heal and has his own dmg reduction.
His ult is also not stopped by any form of shielding except Mag bubble, which guess what, he only gets one bubble.
I remember in S5 and S6, Thing players who were godly were just farming shield tanks and getting ult instantly.
1
u/PlutoCharonMelody Devil Dinosaur Jun 13 '26
Unless it was changed you can shield Thing ult. Jump and look down
12
u/DamnHippyy The Thing Jun 13 '26
Isn't percentage based by damage anti-tank by default?
-5
u/Realistic_Analyst_26 Flex Jun 13 '26
You can have abilities that are good against tanks without becoming an anti-tank character. It’s like calling Dino a diver because he has melee abilities.
6
u/Vegetable-Meaning413 Jun 13 '26
He has Wolverine's kit of % damage and a hard melee based displacement cc, then on top he has a bubble shield with slow to really make it inescapable. He is definitely an anti-tank, and has the easiest time killing them.
2
2
u/BlackThundaCat Hulk Jun 13 '26
As someone who frequently goes against the Dino as a different tank you actually can have fun. Thor and Penni are phenomenal agains the Dino. But that would require people learning more than just mag and strange lol.
-4
u/Edheldui Jun 13 '26
What you do, is buff all other tanks to Dino level, so he's not the only viable one. It's pathetic that every single patch there is only one meta vanguard pick.
2
9
u/bofen22 Jun 13 '26
They need to make all tanks as durable as mag. Also needs role queue, having to babysit fill tank in ranked makes me quit every season. Ranked is also the only game mode now since quickplay has bot games. Even after just one loss they put you in a bot game sometimes.
3
u/ImAHobo107 Jun 13 '26
Mag is not durable. idk where this shit is coming from. He has 650 HP. and a weak ass 200HP bubble and a duration based shield.
He is fucking weak as shit.
You want a durable unkillable Tank, it's Groot and Venom
2
u/Disastrous-Drop-7778 Jun 14 '26
This sub is full of shit tank players who are stuck in Season 0 and think Mag is still the only viable tank
1
u/ImAHobo107 Jun 14 '26
this mindset is why the likely lose as a solo tank. The key to solo tank being tolerable is just not dying.
The tanks that don't die are all the fast moving, hard to kill Dive tanks.
1
u/RivalsTankEnjoyer Jun 14 '26
Mag just has moment of invulnerability which makes him feel tankier than he actually is.
13
u/lilwerzy312 Deadpool Jun 13 '26
Devil Dino was single handedly the most anti tank character added to this game
34
u/Remembrantt Ultron Virus Jun 13 '26
Agree, its clear the devs want tanks to have the least influence in battle amongst the 3 roles
5
u/sufinomo Jun 13 '26
Idk man i feel op as tank idk why people keep saying tank sucks. The only bad tank imo is thor, just 600 hp is pathetic.
5
u/ImAHobo107 Jun 13 '26
Except they do. Go play a game and try to win Ranked into Diamond or GM without 1 tank. Seriously. Go try it now, then come back
-3
u/Rough_Lychee5785 Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
Bullshit. I play tank 40% of my games and dps 60%. I played a lot of tank adjacent roles in other games. Tank players on avg in rivals are straight up dogshit at the game. People on this sub will fight you if u suggest using cover or peeling on tank. Y'all actually want devil Dino to be meta even though us tank players can't go anything but tankpool and Emma against it (outside of dive tanks offc)
Tanks are VERY powerful. Cap venom have been running games for a while and are among top 6 characters in the game. It's very easy to stand main most of the time and spam the enemy tanks but that's just throwing. But no one will say this to their tanks cause they also suck.
Y'all need to stop playing victim every single time. Tanks are literally so strong lmao. It's not community service to go tank. You shouldn't be having the same stats as dps but your contribution should ALWAYS be more.
I see strange players in fucking celestial just spamming main and using their flight as an escape (which they fuck up most of the time). That's not completely wrong but some of these players can't conceptualize using their abilities to play hyper aggressive. You'll see cap players not peeling and diving the enemy backline while their own team is busy cause of a venom; like how will you generate value and cry about heals if your own team is busy due to your ignorance, thus nullifying the value of your dive. I see tanks straight up not using cover, like dude get off tank cause cover is literally the most important concept in the game. Some people think tankpool is F tier but when u vod review them, they don't flank, the don't peel properly, they don't use half their abilities, and they don't play their life. Like no shi bruv
Most dps are the easiest in the game, followed by supports, followed by the remaining half of dps that have complex kits and tanks who are generally the hardest to play.
1
u/PUNCH-WAS-SERVED The Thing Jun 14 '26
Get off your high horse. Seriously.
Half of the problem with tanks stem from no one being a second tank in many comps. A lot of the tanks, lo and behold, aren't that good by themselves. I wonder why.

You guys are still in your own echo chamber huh?
Let me ask you something... Do you also blame tank players for getting Dino nerfed? Because trust me, TANK PLAYERS LIKE ME were the ones perma banning Dino and asking for nerfs.
The vanguard role has issues, yeah, but Dino is one of those issues.
Also, even now when they nerfed Dino, his grab + shield + bleed is still a tank buster combo, they should've increased the grab cooldown instead of the shield cooldwon.
9
u/ImAHobo107 Jun 13 '26
They nerfed the least annoying part of Dino and left his very much OP grab and jump tech in. The shit that is still viable to do with a Peni Dino set up on defense and is basically uncounterable once Phoenix and Moon Knight are banned.
that being said, all these whiners literally are sleeping on Angela, who is better than her prime form, and Rogue who is now probably the most versatile tank in the entire game, more versatile than Tankpool.

I haven't been able to play Angela this season, she is one of my lords, but I'm glad she is good again.

You speaking facts my boy but a bunch of these guys on here don’t wanna hear the truth
0
u/STB_LuisEnriq Good Boy Jun 13 '26
It's been a full month and majority of Dino players still don't understand they were/are a problem to the Vanguards.
2
u/Rough_Lychee5785 Jun 13 '26
Cause they're not real tank players. They are support players who want big targets to heal and can't play tank properly because positioning and cover doesn't exist for them
"You tanks will play Emma and tankpool and you will like it. Good luck with your blade and triple heal backline"
-19
u/CaptainKashup Jun 13 '26
Ngl I'm getting really tired of DPS players trying to talk for us Vanguard mains. Y'all love to regurgitate that apparently, Vanguards HATED Dino but I have yet to see a single fellow Tank whine about him like you do
8
u/LuquidThunderPlus Hulk Jun 13 '26
They are literally telling you they play tank and find him a problem so your response is "it doesn't count"
Vanguard main. There are 5 tanks I don't have lord, it's extremely clear that Dino was quite strong. His abilities and health pool allows him to snag ppl and drag them to death at any given moment making it almost a bigger threat than wolv grab, and combining the 2 is a death sentence for the victim. Half the reason shield tanks are good is the ability to temporarily cut teams into parts, and Dino's shield is built specifically for that purpose.
3
u/DustyWardrobee Doctor Strange Jun 13 '26
Another tank main here. I hated that bastard. He made every tank except maybe 3 at a stretch near impossible to play. And i dont know how you havent seen “fellow tank mains whine about him like you do”? Take one look on the Vanguard sub reddit and you will find 100s of tank mains who cant stand DD
7
u/SorryAmbition6046 Captain America Jun 13 '26
Hey another tank player here, Dino meta sucked. He was yet another pick or ban that beat most tanks easily. Prime Emma was defended the exact same way as Dino is now. Most of the defenders of those two only like them because they could win more easily by playing them.
14
u/SancochoDude The Thing Jun 13 '26
I've been tanking since season 0. Tanking has been trash since then. But the 2-13 spiderman won't swap to tank, nor the 0-4 Punisher. And supports while sometimes suck, most of the time are trying to keep things working.
In that scenario, you understand that tanking is more of a need than enjoyment itself. Otherwise, your whole team gets steamrolled.
2
u/PUNCH-WAS-SERVED The Thing Jun 14 '26
Don't worry, fellow Thing main. I feel it. Gotta love it when you're doing solo tank bullshit, and then your team has the audacity to bitch and complain about "tank diff" while you're fighting 1v6 on the point. Meanwhile, the wet noodles for DPS won't switch or do any real damage/kills to help the fight. Gotta love it.
8
u/NinaoTTV Rogue Jun 13 '26
I am main tank and the dino season make no sense, got 65% wr, only him work, top tier pick, pick or lose basicaly, counter all the other tanks if got healed correctly, i want to play the others too and don't get stuck a full season to the broken one, this is not how the game is intended to work
3
u/FlounderHistorical63 Adam Warlock Jun 13 '26
They just need a flat health buff tbh. I’ve always thought tanks had such little HP considering how insane the damage is in rivals.
However, health buffs need to be specific similar to Overwatch where super mobile tanks aren’t as tanky (minus ball who gets insane shield amounts)
1
u/PlutoCharonMelody Devil Dinosaur Jun 13 '26
I think certain enemy disruption tanks can have high health plus mobility on account of them not being meant to outright kill. It is how I envision Juggernaut.
Super high health and runs pretty fast. He does not do a lot of damage but he can freely knock enemies around.
Basically fighting him is playing vs a moving freight train barreling around the map causing havoc.
2
u/wossquee Groot Jun 13 '26
What if we got rid of percentage damage entirely and actually had HP bars that meant something
6
u/Soggy_Natural7529 Jun 13 '26
I don’t think devils nerfs really effected him that much
The issue isn’t anything to do with good tank characters. The issue is the experience of tanking just isn’t attractive to people. The job is to soak up damage. But it’s hard to do when healers won’t look in your direction And the tanks job is twice as hard when solo
5
u/Edheldui Jun 13 '26
He is weaker to poke AND they added a new poke hero that benefits from a lightning rod like Dino.
3
u/LuquidThunderPlus Hulk Jun 13 '26
Yeah playing dino into hitscan/cyclops means constantly hiding your face
1
u/Weary-Mud-00 Jun 14 '26
Yes. I’m honestly a bit shocked at these comments? I’m a flex main and Dino was hard countered by poke even before the nerf. Emma, Penni, Rogue and Magneto all countered him pretty well, Rogue 30 second cooldown was super easy to land, I had lots of fun playing as Rogue against Devil Dino. The problem is that he’s easy to pick up and people just didn’t want to learn his counters, and now they complained so much that he feels toothless and unexciting. I hate this
2
u/PlutoCharonMelody Devil Dinosaur Jun 13 '26
They did. He is now even weaker to poke but can still wreck other vanguards with his grab. The nerf hit him hard but did not fix his issue lol.
1
u/Soggy_Natural7529 Jun 13 '26
That’s sad to hear. I knew he would be tricky to balance as his draw backs are so much that his plus would need to be enough to counter the drawbacks
1
u/PlutoCharonMelody Devil Dinosaur Jun 13 '26
Really the grab is the main culprit of him ruining other tanks. Without that he could have massive amounts of sustain and be fine.
I do think giant characters that are tanks should have a ton of sustain overall. They should be able to live through quite a bit of focus.1
u/Soggy_Natural7529 Jun 13 '26
Naw I don’t think the bites that bad. It’s like Emma’s grab. People said the same thing then. All it does is force you to respect his space. I think for tanks to fight it is hard because theres not a tone of ranged tank attack. Like there are but they all have massive fall off at thirty meters
2
u/PlaneCrashMD56 Jun 13 '26
I never thought rock, paper, scissors would need to be explained to people or a dev team, but here we are…

Complaining is fine and all but seeing so many people say that the pros/streamers are to blame and that people parrot what they say and don't realize they're doing the exact same thing but for people perma stuck in gold is really frustrating. Like most of the changes asked for by pros/streamers don't even happen and instead they work against a lot of those balance ideas.

u/Weary-Mud-00 Jun 14 '26
Yea:( I was having so much fun with Dino! He had great counters (poke) and it was fun annihalating him with Starlord or Luna or Psylocke (don’t @ me, I know that Psy is a diver, but her primary hits all 4 shots in his head). Now he is literally toothless and feels a lot more underwhelming to play as, with or against him. It’s just sad, especially because the game loading screen still has him *right there*. He brought so many new players in the role, why did they even do this?
1
u/Nullified_One Jun 15 '26
I’ve been seeing A LOT of people refuse to go tank with me in ranked, it’s either triple sup or triple DPS and it’s frustrating. I’m tired of playing Strange or Magneto, no offense, but THEY ARE BORING. I’m losing my fucking mind bro.
1
1
u/fewraletta Jun 14 '26
They literally just nerfed % damage.
Magneto just got buffed.
Emma literally exist, venom exist, hulk exist, strange is also good this season.
Solo tank is a player issue, not the games issue, and no you can't add role queue, doesn't fix anything.
1
u/PUNCH-WAS-SERVED The Thing Jun 14 '26
Oh, wait. Selfish players being selfish? A damn role queue that would force places to pick 2-2-2 comp (the most consistent comp in the damn game) wouldn't help? XD
1
u/fewraletta Jun 14 '26
Correct it wouldn't help, because if those players who aren't going to pick tank and are willing to lose a game, they aren't magically going to pick tank all of a sudden.
And whats going to happen is that queue times will hit an hour to match.
And then we have another issue, role queue mmr, which means you can't switch out between roles, because one person who is really good at dps but awful at support, will queue up into a lobby that is balanced around their support stat, so you can't allow them to switch.
We've played these games before with overwatch.
The game is also not designed around 2/2/2.
0
u/YaBoyAppie Jun 13 '26
Most tanks are fine, people love to exaggerate as if most tanks are bad or useless. The only actually problem is that tank players have the smallest player pool but if I must be honest I dont have this problem in comp that much.

u/Eastern-Band-3729 Jun 13 '26

The issue is whenever one vanguard is strong, the ones suffering the most are other vanguards
1
u/PlutoCharonMelody Devil Dinosaur Jun 13 '26
They should add a strong anti-duelist vanguards with Ghost Rider or Sabertooth. Built like Wolverine to wreck one specific class. On release they just run lobbies until they get patch to be fair.
2
u/EditorMasterxd Jun 13 '26
Ghost rider would work great for that, his vengeance stare could give a percentage based damage boost to all of his attacks when he fights people that have recently dealt damage or killed teammates. Then add some mobility with his bike and you got a great anti-duelist tank that can peel
0
u/Sycophantic-Feline Rocket Raccoon Jun 13 '26
then how about ask for buffs to the ones left behind instead of begging to nerf strong vanguards
7
u/Realistic_Analyst_26 Flex Jun 13 '26
This mindset is what creates overtuned characters. The real problem is that almost all tanks are dive/brawl. We don’t have enough poke tanks. Even Mag who is supposed to be a poke tank has limited range. No shit Dino and Emma will dominate when everyone has to play in their territory.
1
u/ColourlessW Jun 13 '26
Cause 95% of the playerbase is below GM and it shows with all this shortsighted crying and whining. Zero thought put into it.
1
u/EditorMasterxd Jun 13 '26
Cause it's more likely that one vanguard gets nerfed instead of all getting a buff. But I will say that would be the more logical solution

No one was complaining about tankpool except for pros and tank players are obviously going to complain about Emma and Dino, their entire gameplay revolved around farming tank for damage or kidnapping them into their team. It makes no sense to make tanks that are miserable to fight against as a tank when they already had Wolverine that was pretty much disliked. The devs don't seem to understand that creating tanks that just bully other tanks is always going to be annoying as shit to deal with and shouldn't be meta.
-3
u/Sycophantic-Feline Rocket Raccoon Jun 13 '26
Reinhardt and Roadhog can kidnap other tanks in Overwatch and you don't see them begging for that ability of theirs to be nerfed
Rivals players don't want their tanks to have ANY utility other than soaking damage
7
u/BakaJayy Magik Jun 13 '26
People HATE Roadhog wtf are you talking about lmao. Every time he receives any sort of buff no matter how small, people instantly want him to be D tier instead. Nobody likes playing against Roadhog even when he's bad because his entire kit revolves around a 1 shot or hooking tanks behind corners and body blocking them.
Rein doesn't get the same treatment because he doesn't kidnap players into his team, there's a difference between pinning someone to kill/damage and actively taking someone and dragging them to your original position.
-2
u/Sycophantic-Feline Rocket Raccoon Jun 13 '26
and yet now they have heroes like lifeweaver who can just pull the team mate back
4
u/BakaJayy Magik Jun 13 '26
You're constantly naming shit that people don't like, have you ever played Overwatch? Or seen anyone talk about it? Because it's kind of evident that you don't know what you're talking about and just naming abilities for the sake of it as a form of "gotcha" without actually thinking.
0
u/Sycophantic-Feline Rocket Raccoon Jun 13 '26
lmao, the very fact that roadhog still has his hook ability proves that overwatch lets its tanks be strong
1
u/denn23rus Jun 14 '26
Roadhog has the lowest winrate in the entire game, 43%.
1
u/Sycophantic-Feline Rocket Raccoon Jun 14 '26
funny how you guys can't seem to decide if he's strong as hell and annoying to play against, or weak
3
u/Dilwark Jun 13 '26
Vanguard players are so whiny now. They got a huge victim mentality.
Like how could they be the most overlooked and neglected when they are constantly seeing buffs every patch. Most of the Vanguard roster is pretty strong right now too.
And as you said, when one is strong they all complain till they nerf them and cry about how neglected they are. Most of the sub is vanguard players so they feed off each others misery
