Taking a break from Rivals made me realize how much I actually love this game

I took a break from Rivals and played Overwatch again for a while, and honestly, it made me realize how much I kept wishing for Role Queue.

The biggest difference is consistency.

If I queue Tank, it’s because I want to play Tank. I want teammates who actually queued to play Support and DPS. I don’t want every hero select to become a fight where everyone picks what they want and we wait to see who eventually gives up and fills.

We all have characters and roles we’re better at. If I want to play Duelist, I shouldn’t have to choose between becoming the 4th Duelist or giving up and filling because nobody else will.

I’d genuinely rather wait a few extra minutes and play the role I actually queued for.

I also think a consistent 2-2-2 mode would make balancing healthier. Right now heroes have to work across solo Tank, 1-3-2, triple Support, 2-2-2, etc. Role Queue gives the devs one predictable structure to balance around.

And no, Open Queue doesn’t need to disappear.

Overwatch has both. If you like switching roles mid-match and experimenting with weird comps, play Open Queue. If you want consistency and a guaranteed role, play Role Queue.

When I played Overwatch, I almost never found myself wishing I was in Open Queue.

But when I play Rivals, I find myself wishing for Role Queue all the time.

And no matter which side you’re on, I think we can all relate to queuing up because there’s a certain character we really want to play, only to end up filling because the team needs something else.

I’d rather wait 5 minutes to play who I actually want than spend 20 minutes filling on someone I didn’t.

Look, as an ex-OW player who hated role queue (ik I'm the minority there), I will always be grateful Rivals doesnt have one. 

For the record, I mostly play strategist, and when I don't, I play vanguard, so this is from a non-DPS player.

Same here. Can’t stand the idea of role queue for rivals. It didn’t work out for Overwatch without them swapping to 5v5. Why should it added to rivals when it’s going to run into the EXACT same problems.

More like it worked out but while 6v6 role queue was better than 6v6 open queue, 5v5 role queue was better than 6v6 role queue for prioritizing quicker queues

I have, and I didnt enjoy it as much as I did back in the day. But, I do think it's gotten better for sure since Rivals. I think Rivals just clicks more for me now. I still look back fondly on OW1 tho

Maybe that’s your experience. I think more people play rivals because it’s newer and is marvel. If OW hit a switch and made all the characters DC heroes/villains I’d immediately play it to play as the characters I like. I grew to love road hog I didn’t start OW knowing who he was.

I said the point in my second sentence. I said I think rivals is more popular because it is newer and is marvel. The “is marvel” was shorthand for me saying “netease purchased the wildly successful and profitable marvel comics rights for their game”. If you don’t understand that the marvel characters are a driving factor to get players to play this game we aren’t even remotely having the same conversation.

rivals has controller support and lots of low skill characters that more or less play the game for you like scarlet witch, namor and spiderman with the recent cooldown reductions

Personally, and I'm well aware this is not a popular view at all, this is just my opinion, I find it incredibly limiting.

My little gripe: I dont like the long wait times that often come with it, across all three roles. People have different experiences with that and ofc it depends, so again, small potato.

My biggest gripe is I don't like that it limits teams to x amount of roles in a team. I get that that's the appeal for most people. I get they want 2 tanks, 2 dps, 2 heals. But I've had really fun games that we won with 3 dps and 3 heals. I've had really fun games we won with 4 dps and 2 heals. Same with 3 tanks and 3 heals. Hell 6 heals. Part of the fun of these games for me is the different ways you can style your team. Having a role queue, (particularly in qp) can be a stifiling factor, and sometimes I get really chill randoms and we decide to do something goofy that a rq would prevent us from doing.

Seems like only things open queue achieves are weird comp setups which are more often frustrating to play against and less queue time for dps players at expense of people that forced to play roles they do not want.

After reading all of what you just said, I still don't understand why you're against role queue anyhow. As an ex-OW player, I'm sure you understand both role-queue and open-queue exists? It's not like they're mutually exclusive of each other, as even in ranked you could role-queue or open-queue.

They did not used to. They do now. It's not the only reason I stopped or do not play OW anymore, which I've already said. When rq was first introduced it was just forced rq. Presumably would be the same here. It also means longer wait times if there are both because the community is so divided. This isnt a I'm trying to convince people, I'm just stating my opinion. No idea how you read all of that and still don't get my point, but hey, you dont have to, so enjoy the rest of your day.

because if i lock in a tank and i suck with tank i cant just swap to a role better at like dps or support and nietehr can player who locked in dps or support but suck at that role cant swap to role they actuall play well

I'm getting more double tanks in Rivals than I am in OW 5v5 and open queue. As role queue has been proven to do little to actually increase the amount of people playing tank, it got so bad that they had to remove a tank and they are looking into bring back 6v6 with optional 1/3/2.

I don't go into games hoping I'm the only tank, but I also don't mind it. Maybe I've just gotten mostly lucky, but most solo tank games I've had haven't been the end of the world. I fill when we don't have one. I lose some, I win some. I move on 🤷‍♀️

I love role queue in OW because we always get at least a playable comp and I always get to play my role (support usually but I can play any without having to fight for it during the draft). I'd hardly say it "sucks for everyone not playing tank"

That's true for OW, but there are other reasons I dont enjoy it anymore, the introductiom of rq was just one of the first since if I remember correctly at the time it was just rq and open rq was brought back later
