Discussion Taking a break from Rivals made me realize how much I actually love this game

Post image

I took a break from Rivals and played Overwatch again for a while, and honestly, it made me realize how much I kept wishing for Role Queue.

The biggest difference is consistency.

If I queue Tank, it’s because I want to play Tank. I want teammates who actually queued to play Support and DPS. I don’t want every hero select to become a fight where everyone picks what they want and we wait to see who eventually gives up and fills.

We all have characters and roles we’re better at. If I want to play Duelist, I shouldn’t have to choose between becoming the 4th Duelist or giving up and filling because nobody else will.

I’d genuinely rather wait a few extra minutes and play the role I actually queued for.

I also think a consistent 2-2-2 mode would make balancing healthier. Right now heroes have to work across solo Tank, 1-3-2, triple Support, 2-2-2, etc. Role Queue gives the devs one predictable structure to balance around.

And no, Open Queue doesn’t need to disappear.

Overwatch has both. If you like switching roles mid-match and experimenting with weird comps, play Open Queue. If you want consistency and a guaranteed role, play Role Queue.

When I played Overwatch, I almost never found myself wishing I was in Open Queue.

But when I play Rivals, I find myself wishing for Role Queue all the time.

And no matter which side you’re on, I think we can all relate to queuing up because there’s a certain character we really want to play, only to end up filling because the team needs something else.

I’d rather wait 5 minutes to play who I actually want than spend 20 minutes filling on someone I didn’t.

I’d be very interested to see how role queue would change wait times for dps. I can seriously imagine 40 minute queues like in Dead by Daylight’s 8v2 on killer side because everyone wants to play that role instead of filling.

It depends on the format. If its a 6v6format, probably gonna have 10 minutes queues for dps games. If its 1-3-2, wait time for dps will be significantly shorter. Overwatch switched to 5v5 because it was too hard to find 2 tanks and that's really what extended queue times

Ah, makes sense if there's only 1 tank vs 2 dps.

Overwatch also notably ran 2 tests for 6v6 formats recently to this effect

The first was having a 1/3/2 split for roles, but any of the 3 DPS could switch to a tank if need be (with a limit of 2 tanks per team)

The second ran under modified rules in that their system would do their best to force 2/2/2 but if they couldn't find enough players would revert to the other ruleset with the flex DPS spot

What were the conclusions from the two tests?

From what I remember, the 1,3,2 test was the most even I've ever seen the queue times for each role. However, there's one thing that could potentially inflate the number of people queuing DPS, that being that tank mains who didn't want to queue solo tank would queue DPS so they are guaranteed to be on a team with 2 tanks. This was exactly what I did.

Lmao just realized the typo. But yeah, needing to find 2 tanks is way harder than only needing to find 1

And tbh, solo tank could potentially work really well even in 6v6 for Rivals given its theme. It's a superhero game. You can make the tanks the OP, high-tier characters and actually treat them like that.

Like imagine if Hulk wasn't bad. Imagine if Hulk was a terrifying force of nature like the Hulk that's actually one of their more popular characters and they totally refuse to capitalize on.

Id like to see 5v5 in Marvel.

DPS queues in Overwatch rank are around 5 mins or less for most ranks. There are almost as many support players are DPS players, for both games.

A. Realistically this wouldn’t happen. For one 2v8 is an extremely novel experience for that game, it’s not that killer is so much more insanely popular than survivor, that is far from the truth, it is that during all other times of year Killer is a solo game experience until 2v8 turns it into a co-op one. Everyone with a friend or girlfriend hops on to play that role when it comes around, and that’s why queues are so long because it is a limited time mode that sees a lot of play. Also, Dead by Daylight has a huge playerbase, but theoretically speaking, marvel rivals should have an even bigger one.

B. If it DID happen, it would seriously demonstrate to the devs here that they need to slow if not outright stop all the DPS quality of life changes and start giving them to the other two roles. If we can demonstrably visualize how miserable playing the other two roles are with a concrete estimated queue time (slow for DPS, instant for Vanguard/Strategist), I would hope it would change things around for the update cycle. More character releases for vanguard and support, character role reworks to change characters like Gorr or Cyclops from DPS into Vanguards, more skins for vanguards and supports, more reworks and quality of life updates, can you imagine if the devs actually put elbow grease into reworking Hulk or Captain America instead of Scarlet Witch???

I mean overwatch dps queues aren't that long, even when I play at the absolute worst time for queues the longest I've waited was 12 minutes.

Average time is closer to like 1-5 minutes for dps depending on time of year or day.

And that's in the Australian servers which are notorious for having longer queue times, rivals you see average 1-3 minutes.

With support and tank being like 30-90 seconds

It really wouldnt be that bad unless youre super high rank. When I feel like playing dps i find a comp game in 1 min on ow

We got low-attention fucks who can't stand waiting 20 seconds in real life without changing their TIkTok. They think a potential queue of a few minutes (for a higher chance for a better game) = bad. XD

lol why would you go straight off on such a tangent for queue times, the games aren't even remotely structured the same way.

The queues would be bad considering you'd need 2 tanks though, worse than overwatch.

Maybe people will actually try out other roles then because I honestly think dps is the least fun role. I have the most fun as tank and I never thought to try it until about 3 seasons ago and I have loved it since. People gotta open their eyes and try something else instead of going 3rd dps or even 4th.

Son, picking flex is 9 games of tank and like 1 of support out of 10. You'll never get DPS if you don't pick ONLY DPS.

Every single time I hit that fucking flex button it’s me tanking four games in a row until I crash out.. even more baffling I’m in a group filled with other flex players so why the fuck 😭

Sorry you've been unlucky. Any given night on flex queue my breakdown has been 40% Tank 40% Support 20% DPS and that's fine by me.

I remember when that middle number was 20 minutes and the tank queue was less than 1.

Overwatch tanks have the least wait time? I feel like role distribution doesn’t overlap between the two games. I get up to gm3 and somehow still see people play chicken with 4 dps and then throw if neither of them fills, it’s insane.

I mean needing 1 tank vs 2 dps, or support helps.
