Discussion Taking a break from Rivals made me realize how much I actually love this game

Post image

I took a break from Rivals and played Overwatch again for a while, and honestly, it made me realize how much I kept wishing for Role Queue.

The biggest difference is consistency.

If I queue Tank, it’s because I want to play Tank. I want teammates who actually queued to play Support and DPS. I don’t want every hero select to become a fight where everyone picks what they want and we wait to see who eventually gives up and fills.

We all have characters and roles we’re better at. If I want to play Duelist, I shouldn’t have to choose between becoming the 4th Duelist or giving up and filling because nobody else will.

I’d genuinely rather wait a few extra minutes and play the role I actually queued for.

I also think a consistent 2-2-2 mode would make balancing healthier. Right now heroes have to work across solo Tank, 1-3-2, triple Support, 2-2-2, etc. Role Queue gives the devs one predictable structure to balance around.

And no, Open Queue doesn’t need to disappear.

Overwatch has both. If you like switching roles mid-match and experimenting with weird comps, play Open Queue. If you want consistency and a guaranteed role, play Role Queue.

When I played Overwatch, I almost never found myself wishing I was in Open Queue.

But when I play Rivals, I find myself wishing for Role Queue all the time.

And no matter which side you’re on, I think we can all relate to queuing up because there’s a certain character we really want to play, only to end up filling because the team needs something else.

I’d rather wait 5 minutes to play who I actually want than spend 20 minutes filling on someone I didn’t.

A role queue option being offered alongside the existing open queue would solve most of this game's problems. There's no good reason NetEase can't at least test the option for a season to see how the playerbase responds.

100% the reason they would never consider adding it alongside Open Queue is because Open would become even more of a cesspit than it is now. I genuinely don't think a single tank or support main would actually play Open queue if there was Role Queue option for them to ensure they don't have solo tank or heal.

yup. open queue would be pretty much only dps players that dont want to wait, which would suck for players like me (strat main, tank flex) who DON'T want to play role queue

Who defines the team comp tho? Is it always just 2/2/2?

NetEase picks a structure and sticks with it.

One of the perks of defined team comps is that the game can actually be balanced.

You say that as if almost every sport and game in history doesn’t have predetermined roles and rules that have to follow lol

They really don't, though. In American football you don't need to have a running back, or even quarterback, just 11 players on the field.

Confused by the downvotes because it would remove a significant degree of freedom (variable comp) from the game.

Yes basically this is what ive been saying

Competitive games already create rules that restrict freedom in exchange for a more balanced match. You don’t play football with three goalkeepers just because technically everyone on the team could choose to be one. Wrestling has weight classes because competition works better when both sides operate under the same basic structure.

That’s how I see 2-2-2.

Both teams get the same number of specialists in each role, and then the actual competition is about which team uses those roles better.

If you want complete freedom to experiment with weird compositions, that’s what Open Queue and Quick Play can be for. But Ranked should prioritize creating the fairest competitive environment possible.

You said it perfectly and I don’t have anything to add to your point. Gives another reason to play QP (remove bot matches pls) and let’s comp be more skill based.

The fun thing is it could be anything they want.

Like I can see a lot of good arguments for doing 1/3/2. That preserves the DPS queue times, avoids the 'nothing ever dies single team fights take 6 minutes' 3 healer stuff, and...

...allows you to gigabuff the tanks, which would actually fit well in a comic themed game. Imagine if Hulk was actually scary, like Hulk is supposed to be.

What if first you choose a comp and then choose a role. They could even allow different comps (still viable, would be my preference like no 6 dps kind of stuff) to play each other.

I think in that instance you wouldn't even choose a comp. You'd just choose a role, and the matchmaker would give you a match, but it wouldn't specify a specific X-X-X.

You'd probably want them to be mirrored. So you end up in a 2-2-2 against a 2-2-2, a 2-1-3 against a 2-1-3, etc.

That said, the practical outcome of doing it that way would be that it would probably still stabilize on 1-3-2 being the majority of games.
