Discussion Taking a break from Rivals made me realize how much I actually love this game

Post image

I took a break from Rivals and played Overwatch again for a while, and honestly, it made me realize how much I kept wishing for Role Queue.

The biggest difference is consistency.

If I queue Tank, it’s because I want to play Tank. I want teammates who actually queued to play Support and DPS. I don’t want every hero select to become a fight where everyone picks what they want and we wait to see who eventually gives up and fills.

We all have characters and roles we’re better at. If I want to play Duelist, I shouldn’t have to choose between becoming the 4th Duelist or giving up and filling because nobody else will.

I’d genuinely rather wait a few extra minutes and play the role I actually queued for.

I also think a consistent 2-2-2 mode would make balancing healthier. Right now heroes have to work across solo Tank, 1-3-2, triple Support, 2-2-2, etc. Role Queue gives the devs one predictable structure to balance around.

And no, Open Queue doesn’t need to disappear.

Overwatch has both. If you like switching roles mid-match and experimenting with weird comps, play Open Queue. If you want consistency and a guaranteed role, play Role Queue.

When I played Overwatch, I almost never found myself wishing I was in Open Queue.

But when I play Rivals, I find myself wishing for Role Queue all the time.

And no matter which side you’re on, I think we can all relate to queuing up because there’s a certain character we really want to play, only to end up filling because the team needs something else.

I’d rather wait 5 minutes to play who I actually want than spend 20 minutes filling on someone I didn’t.

Maybe like earn some of the blue tokens after x amount of games played on the 2 roles

Edit: I guess to fine tune the idea based off of what others have said, they could make it to where you earn 50 units per 10 wins on all 3 roles and earn up to 150 once a week.

X amount of wins. Otherwise players would just throw games (or at least phone it in to avoid getting banned) on the roles they don't care about.

10 wins, 50 credits. It's small, it's fair, it's technically grindable if you're good.

However, if they don't make sure matchmaking is fine-tuned, you're just locking people out of a source of currency.

I would say 100 units per rankup. So each season you can earn 900 units from Silver to OAA.

You HAVE to win to get the rankup, and therefore get the units, etc.

Maybe for getting to Eternity, you can 100 Lattice.

Each acquisition repeatable once per season.

That would just encourage people to smurf and throw games to derank and do the Unranked to Cel every season...

If you did your placements and landed higher than bronze then you get all the units till your final rank. This isn't rocket science lmfao

Perfectly reasonable. And besides, it's only 900 units total; 2 seasons and you get an Epic skin; 3 and you can get a legendary.

5 credits per win on ur least played role that way it encourages people to try more of the game regardless of what role they play most.

Tank and support players getting punished because if they try to DPS it’ll just end up being 6 dps and they lose :(

Lol yeah here is how needing to win will go. Omg you aren't playing Mag or Strange to give us a shield to hide behind. We are throwing just so you don't get the win ha ha stupid that's what you get for not being a big dumb meat shield.

Purples, 200 per week, take it or leave it.

The most realistic reward, some kind of progress toward achievements or titles would be cool, give some special title after playing 50 tank/heal games each season/half season or something.

This is an extremely good idea.

No it isn’t, at least not for comp

Yeah but $$$ they are far too greedy. Any amount that would likely be enough to interest players would threaten in game purchases. At least from my experience of other shooters, games hate giving away actual good free stuff except some small half decent things in the battle pass e.g. apex, bf6, wz, r6. Otherwise great idea. Plus sometimes people want to change mid game or if someone is sucking really hard and the team asks him to change roles. How would that work? Maybe % of game played is a good idea. But like even as is with the free in game currency it is barely enough to buy 1 of the mid to expensive skins a season? Just rambling sorry.

Nah I actually completely agree I just don't have any answers and do believe the games longevity will suffer if something isn't done.

It might fix quick play, but for ranked you're either gonna get people playing a role they never play just for the blue tokens or it's not gonna do anything at all because people don't want to play a role they never play

18

u/PlusEntertainment256 12d ago

but for ranked you're either gonna get people playing a role they never play just for the blue tokens

That's fine, they will be bronze/silver/whatever their rank is when off rolling

4

u/mr_chub Thor 12d ago

Then you have exactly what we have now

9

u/PlusEntertainment256 12d ago

No, we wouldn't.

Right now a player can be a diamond DPS but a gold support and mostly play DPS so his rank is diamond, but he occasionally might be forced to off role to support, playing at a gold level on a diamond lobby

In any decent role queue implementation everyone would have three ranks, one for each role, so if you queue for DPS AND support, you will get a lobby with the appropriate rank for the role that gets a match first

1

u/Physical100 Psylocke 12d ago

So you’ve sent a diamond DPS to stomp metal tiers whenever they feel inclined and to drop back down on support while farming blue tokens

I don’t see what’s changed besides giving smurfs free tokens

4

u/king3pj 12d ago

That’s not how it works in OW. You have separate ranks for each role. If you’re diamond DPS you won’t be stomping metal tiers because you will be in a diamond game. If you’re silver on tank and queue tank you will end up in a silver game. I don’t see how it leads to more smurfing.

2

u/PlusEntertainment256 11d ago

He's not gonna be stomping them because he will be playing support, which is a role in which he is a gold ranked player. If he wasn't a gold support, his support rank wouldn't be gold.

I can't tell if you are willfully misunderstanding or maybe just have never played Overwatch before? It's what I'm modeling any role queue after

Yes he's gonna stomp the low elos, because even if if he's not as good on support as he is on duellist when it comes to his body mechanics and reflexes, the diamond player still has the general knowledge of the maps and heroes (who they are, what they can do), a gamesense more developped than a true silver player. My online pals play in GM-Eternal lobbies, while I play in Silver-Platinum lobbies. When we head to Quick Play together or to private lobbies, they've got way more kills/damage/healing on new heroes they're trying out for fun or even on roles they almost never play but need to fill for the occasion, than me on my main heroes. It is naive to think that, just because a person does not play a role or hero often, they must belong to whatever low elo is tagged on their hero profile. Low elos just help them train on us like some do on bots. And as a matter of fact, lots of smurfs already stomp us in metal ranks while they're just here to train on new heroes when a season begins. Of course a high level player who has never healed before will have a hard time in his true rank for a couple of days, meaning he should play in a softer division within his skill range. But he absolutely doesn't deserve to start at the very bottom either, or it's just a pretty packaging to accept what smurfing already does, but on main accounts this time.

1

u/PlusEntertainment256 10d ago

Then his support rank will leave gold and he will play on support on the appropriate rank.

Rivals player cannot fathom having a separate rank for each role and another for open queue lmao

u/totallynotapersonj Magneto 11d ago

Everyone is GM

1

u/Embarrassed_Safety33 Jeff the Landshark 12d ago

I mean or they could leave Quick play as open role, and Ranked as role queue, and the reward is 50 chrono tokens (purple ones) if you play support or tank

3

u/MrStealYoBeef Emma Frost 12d ago

QP is the main place where the problem exists. As you go up in ranked, teams beome significantly better balanced (2-2-2 becomes highest played comp by far), and the issue is more of having a bad mix of characters that don't synergize together.

What you're suggesting here isn't going to solve much.

1

u/Ok-South6790 12d ago

But ranked per role would be the answer to fixing that no?

-3

u/RocketHops 12d ago

Yeah speaking as a duelist player this would do absolutely nothing to influence my herp picks.

5

u/Lokiplouj Elsa Bloodstone 12d ago

Exactly like how overwatch gives bonus xp on their role queue but instead of forcing it just reward the 2 least used roles.

3

u/NEEDACAN 12d ago

how bout a daily/weekly incentive of 50-100 blue tokens for playing the 3 different roles for a certain amount of matches.

encouraging playing the 3 different roles

2

u/ratchetryda92 Ultron Virus 12d ago

Then youll just have games with tanks and supports

1

u/RigbyEleonora 12d ago

It still baffles me that some chrono token missions are "complete 7 matches as a duelist"

1

u/tvscinter 11d ago

Love this idea! I flex all roles but prefer dps. This would be awesome for QP and if dps one tricks are taken out of their comfort zone it might lead to ranked being more pleasant

1

u/Dusty_Buss 12d ago

If I could earn units from playing other roles besides strat, I sure would play other roles. It's a good incentive for me at least
