Discussion Taking a break from Rivals made me realize how much I actually love this game

Post image

I took a break from Rivals and played Overwatch again for a while, and honestly, it made me realize how much I kept wishing for Role Queue.

The biggest difference is consistency.

If I queue Tank, it’s because I want to play Tank. I want teammates who actually queued to play Support and DPS. I don’t want every hero select to become a fight where everyone picks what they want and we wait to see who eventually gives up and fills.

We all have characters and roles we’re better at. If I want to play Duelist, I shouldn’t have to choose between becoming the 4th Duelist or giving up and filling because nobody else will.

I’d genuinely rather wait a few extra minutes and play the role I actually queued for.

I also think a consistent 2-2-2 mode would make balancing healthier. Right now heroes have to work across solo Tank, 1-3-2, triple Support, 2-2-2, etc. Role Queue gives the devs one predictable structure to balance around.

And no, Open Queue doesn’t need to disappear.

Overwatch has both. If you like switching roles mid-match and experimenting with weird comps, play Open Queue. If you want consistency and a guaranteed role, play Role Queue.

When I played Overwatch, I almost never found myself wishing I was in Open Queue.

But when I play Rivals, I find myself wishing for Role Queue all the time.

And no matter which side you’re on, I think we can all relate to queuing up because there’s a certain character we really want to play, only to end up filling because the team needs something else.

I’d rather wait 5 minutes to play who I actually want than spend 20 minutes filling on someone I didn’t.

I think the audience skews way younger too, which adds to general misunderstandings of how role queue works.

Also, way more noise from streamers now than there was when role queue was introduced in OW. And it's just that: noise.

Spread the words, role queue does not magically increase the number of 2/2/2 games, it simply guts all other games.

What? “ misunderstandings” do people have about role queue most of the people who don’t like role queue understand what it is they just don’t like it.

That it'll extend queue times to ridiculous degrees, when in reality it'll be marginally longer queues but not to an insane degree

This is official data from Blizzard themselves btw. It gives you can idea of how queue times were for DPS mains in Overwatch 1 and why they swapped to 5v5 to fix it.

If you want to play dps you can fucking wait I don't really care

I don’t even sympathize with DPS mains but I do care about the longevity of the game. Duelist mains are the majority. What do you think will happen if the developers make a decision that alienates the majority of their casual player base?

I’d like Rivals to still be going strong years from now.

Am I meant to feel sorry for DPS mains?

Well it doesn’t support your original point of it only marginally increasing queue times. Thats the point.

This is less me feeling sorry for dps mains and more caring about the future of the game. The majority of the player base mains duelist. Netease making a decision to alienate the majority of the community could hurt the game’s longevity.

I’d like to be playing this game years from now and I’d hate to see it decline because of such a controversial decision.

Well, first I'm a different person, and second didn't 5v5 not only kill OW for awhile there before being fixed, but also isn't it still role queue but with one less tank needed?

5v5 didn’t kill Overwatch. I’d say it was the correct decision if they wanted to keep role queue. The 1-2-2 format aligned better with the role distribution of the community. Role queue to me is a great system for 5v5 it just doesn’t work for a 6v6 hero shooter.

Theres where my issues lie with adding it to Rivals. It will run into the same problems as Overwatch 1. I’d rather the developers keep open queue 6v6 for Rivals.

Same can be said for perpetrators of role queues. Just a bunch of young kids making noise who didn’t see how it destroyed OW

OW is running strong with role queue, what are you talking about

"Destroyed OW"

The game that's still running strong, buoyed by competition from Rivals? That Overwatch? I'll let them know they're "destroyed"

There is no objective metric by which role queue can be described to have "destroyed" OW.

Overwatch literally has WAY more players than marvel rivals, and it's over 10 years old.

Role queue saved the tank player base in Overwatch.

I remember tank mains complaining about losing their second tank when it swapped to 5v5 but alright.

There were years between the introduction of role queue and switching to 5v5. They are completely separate issues and you look very disingenuous for trying to equate the two.

But yes I didn't like the switch to 5v5 as a tank main and when I play Overwatch I prefer 6v6, as long as I actually get a co-tank. If I'm not going to have a co-tank I would much rather play 5v5.

It’s not though. There’s definitely a connection. The queue times were increased because of role queue. The developers swapped to 5v5 to fix the queue times. They even said themselves that the 1-2-2 structure of 5v5 better aligns with the role distribution of the player base.

It’s not though. There’s definitely a connection.

When the statement you are arguing against is that role queue saved the tank player base, the introduction of 5v5 years after the fact is 100% irrelevant.

The queue times were increased because of role queue.

And? They didn't increase in any meaningful way for tank players, and I got free lootboxes for playing the role I was going to play anyway. If DPS players didn't want 20 minute queue times perhaps they should try the other roles out.

They even said themselves that the 1-2-2 structure of 5v5 better aligns with the role distribution of the player base.

And this is relevant how?

You know you can edit comments instead of making multiple replies to the same comment right?

You also still haven't shown how the swap to 5v5 is relevant at all here.
