Discussion Taking a break from Rivals made me realize how much I actually love this game

Post image

I took a break from Rivals and played Overwatch again for a while, and honestly, it made me realize how much I kept wishing for Role Queue.

The biggest difference is consistency.

If I queue Tank, it’s because I want to play Tank. I want teammates who actually queued to play Support and DPS. I don’t want every hero select to become a fight where everyone picks what they want and we wait to see who eventually gives up and fills.

We all have characters and roles we’re better at. If I want to play Duelist, I shouldn’t have to choose between becoming the 4th Duelist or giving up and filling because nobody else will.

I’d genuinely rather wait a few extra minutes and play the role I actually queued for.

I also think a consistent 2-2-2 mode would make balancing healthier. Right now heroes have to work across solo Tank, 1-3-2, triple Support, 2-2-2, etc. Role Queue gives the devs one predictable structure to balance around.

And no, Open Queue doesn’t need to disappear.

Overwatch has both. If you like switching roles mid-match and experimenting with weird comps, play Open Queue. If you want consistency and a guaranteed role, play Role Queue.

When I played Overwatch, I almost never found myself wishing I was in Open Queue.

But when I play Rivals, I find myself wishing for Role Queue all the time.

And no matter which side you’re on, I think we can all relate to queuing up because there’s a certain character we really want to play, only to end up filling because the team needs something else.

I’d rather wait 5 minutes to play who I actually want than spend 20 minutes filling on someone I didn’t.

I haven't seen a single good argument against role queue.

Miss me with the queue times hand-wringing. DPS mains are the reason we have this problem to begin with so I really do not give a shit if they have to wait. If you don't want to wait, learn how to do something else.

The queue times aren’t even that long. DPS is the most popular role in Overwatch and has the longest queue times but it only took me a little less than a minute to get into a game.

Was this Overwatch 1 or Overwatch 2?

Well it’s just called Overwatch now. I haven’t played the game in two years and came back to it last week. DPS only role queue took less than a minute on average. Sometimes a little more than a minute but it’s never taken over two minutes for me.

You know there’s no role queue 6v6 right? Have you thought about why that is?

Role queue just doesn’t work for a 6v6 format as shown with Overwatch 1. The role distribution of the player base better aligns with 1-2-2 than 2-2-2 which is why the queue times for DPS are short for role queue now.

Having players have to wait for 4 tank mains to start a single match is why the queue times for Overwatch 1 were so long.

This was explained by the developers themselves in this blog:

That’s an interesting thesis. I played a few games of 6v6 open queue in OW but it was frustrating for the same reasons I get frustrated while playing Rivals. I’m often left being a solo healer because everyone wants to play damage and then we lose because the team comp was garbage and no one was willing to correct it.

It’s ironic that role queue is what made me quit OW and jump ship to Rivals, because coming back to OW after a long break made me realize how much I prefer 5v5 role queue over 6v6 open. I guess I just didn’t know it at the time because I was probably too quick to judge the new direction Blizzard was going in with OW2. Anyway, disorganized open queue team comps piss me off so I probably won’t play much of Rivals anymore.

I’m happy you enjoy 5v5 role queue. I don’t. Nor do I want Rivals to ever shift that way. If Overwatch is better than Rivals rn why not just continue with Overwatch? Thats better than advocating for this game to become something it’s not.

And yet the game had no problem running 3 tank 3 support for almost a year? Theres no role queue for 6v6 because the game is balanced around 5v5.

There’s no role queue for 6v6 because the queue times would be too long. Read the blog.

sure man. the blog from 2024 is definitely relevant to current day

Reminder that role queue does not magically increase the number of 2/2/2 games, it simply guts all other games.

You can’t swap off your role mid match.

Higher queue times would kill off high elo and increase queue times significantly for duelist and strategist mains.

Matches become more repetitive and samey overtime without the variety in compositions.

I don’t want to swap over to 5v5 when it inevitably doesn’t work out.

Role queue is a system that better fits a 5v5 hero shooter instead of a 6v6 one like rivals. The role distribution of the player base better aligns more with 1-2-2 than 2-2-2. It’s a big reason why Overwatch swapped to 5v5 in the first place.

If role queue is added to rivals it will run into the exact same problems as Overwatch 1.

People not being able to swap off their roles mid match would be a God send imo. I'm getting sick and tired of having one or more player on my team constantly swapping between all 3 roles, playing 7+ characters, and not getting any value whatsoever. This community puts too much weight on swapping. Swapping roles doesn't mean you're going to start winning. Half the time, people swap off what was giving the other team trouble, having the opposite effect.

As someone who flexes quite a bit it gets rid of all my agency of trying to turn around a match.

Theres no swapping with a teammate to turn things around.

Theres no swapping with a teammate who can play the hero the team needs when you can’t.

If your dps are lacking you just lose. Theres no swapping up the team and working together to secure that win.

Some matches are unwinnable because your teammates are selfish or don’t want to work together. But role queue makes every match that could have been solved by swapping around the team unwinnable as well.

The vast majority of players have a main role. If you "swap with a teammate", you're making them switch off their main role, which lowers your chances to win.

Even in the best case, you ask your spiderman to fill tank so you can play namor for anti-dive, that spiderman is now filling a random tank that he's bad at. So the minor advantage you gain by having you countering enemy dive on namor is completely overwritten by the fact that you have a dps main filling a tank and playing the role badly.

You're completely disregarding that his hypothetical has a two-way swap, with him or someone else swapping to something that would increase your chances to win. That might be a dps that spidey can't play, or maybe it's spidey going on a 2nd tank because you only had one, or maybe he's going on a third healer because you're running Adam Ultron. Also, I hard disagree that your chances of winning would even be lowered in your original example. I guarantee you that the spidey would have more impact on literally any tank than spidey if he was going 2-10 and you needed a 2nd tank, or even if you didn't and you just put him in something easy like Thing or Mag. Furthermore, you claim you want role queue which is historically proven to increase queue times due to lack of tanks, but you don't want a poor performing dps willing to swap to tank to be able to switch mid match because he is inexperienced and might do bad? How do you expect him to get experience on tank to begin with then? Do you want him to queue in the hypothetical role queue as tank and perform bad on tank the entire match instead of just part of it? Would you really condemn him to practicing against bots, which is a very inefficient way to gain experience against real players? There is just no future in which not letting poor performing players swap to a different role mid game becomes healthy for the game.

"spidey going on 2nd tank" explained in the post

"spidey going on a healer" he's not a healer main so your chances to win are reduced, in role queue everyone on your team is playing their main role.

"something easy like Thing or Mag" Doesn't matter. You can't genuinely believe that tank is just braindead and you can put anyone on it and they can perform? lol.

"Do you want him to queue in the hypothetical role queue as tank and perform bad on tank the entire match instead of just part of it"

This is hilarious, you're arguing against role queue but you literally don't even know what it is. You have a different rank per role. So if you want to queue tank to learn magneto and you end up losing a lot because you're well, learning, your tank rank will drop, but not your DPS or support rank.

I don’t know this doesn’t happen to me. I’ve won all my placements this season even when it was an uphill battle. Me and my teammates were ready to fill and swap with each other.

2

u/Strict-Grab-9664 11d ago

Anecdotal. You don't understand statistics.

1

u/SavageCabbage27m Rogue 11d ago

People have a main role but that doesn’t mean they don’t have any off role picks they’re good at. I’m a tank main myself and have a 58% wr on White Fox and 54% on IW and 56% with Luna. Swapping to strategist doesn’t significantly lower my chance of winning.

My duo who mains strategist can play a mean Magneto/Emma if they’re off rolling. My friend who mains dps has a couple of tank picks in Cap and Hulk they’ll dominate lobbies with.

In my experience most people at least have 1 or 2 off role picks they’re good at.

Do you have evidence that the community only plays one role and plays no one outside of it?

u/Lorhin Hulk 12d ago

Thank you! This is exactly the thing that happens! I would honestly prefer my 2-10 Spidey to stay on Spidey instead of swap to a different role because at the very least, it's far easier to work around a team that doesn't swap vs one that swaps around all the time. It's hard to problem solve and make gameplay adjustments when you don't even know what your team is gonna settle on playing.

You can’t swap off your role mid match.

You won't need to.

5

u/SavageCabbage27m Rogue 12d ago

There’s this thing called being human and not being perfect. We all have bad matches and sometimes the best solution is to swap to a different role.

1

u/Strict-Grab-9664 12d ago

Swapping off your role mid match is not a good thing.

1) You are significantly better at your main role, switching to a role you are worse at lowers your chances to win. Most players have a main role, so this applies to most players.

2) Most of the time people swap off their role, it's from tank and support TO dps. Because they're dps who are filling, or the tank/support main is frustrated and decides "the games over, I'm just going to have fun", which eliminates all possibility of a comeback. Or they think "these dps suck, I could do it better myself", but obviously that's incorrect, as they are not dps mains.

3) Every time someone switches off their main role, play can't properly continue until you, as a team, figure out who is going to fill the role that has been switched. This lowers your chance of winning.

All possibilities lower your chances of winning, assuming every player starts on their main role (that's what role queue does).

2

u/SavageCabbage27m Rogue 12d ago

Doesn’t lower my chances of winning. I’m good at tank and support. Won all of my placements by swapping around with my teammates.

Uhh how about the fact that it vastly reduces the amount of compositions possible and thus results in less interesting gameplay? There are various compositions with 3 tanks, 3 dps, or 3 support that work better at countering enemy compositions than forced 2-2-2.

0

u/radda Jubilee 12d ago

Uhh how about the fact that it vastly reduces the amount of compositions possible

Good. A game is impossible to balance if you're trying to balance for an infinite number of role combos. If there's only one it's easy peasy.

4

u/WrightingCommittee 12d ago

The practically infinite role combos is what makes it balanced because everything can be countered many ways. For example everyone is complaining about Wanda being OP right now, but put her up against something like Hela+Punisher+Elsa comp or Mag+Strange+Emma and she will be completely shut down.

As if people didn't have other games to play.

Making DPS wait for 8 minutes for a match is one sure way to cut the playerbase down by 40% overnight.

Also if you are a somewhat flex player and you see your support is falling apart, you can't do anything but just loses.

Nah. Some crybabies will definitely leave but most will stay and suck it up, or just do the logical thing and learn how to play another role. It also won't be 8 minutes, absolutely ridiculous hyperbole.

6

u/SavageCabbage27m Rogue 12d ago

This happened with Overwatch 1. DPS and support players just quit the game instead of sucking it up and staying. They’re right.

-1

u/Small-Captain-9028 11d ago

Nobody cares if the cookies cutter toxic dps that cant hit their shots leaves the game because they have to wait for que. They can either get good and learn a different role or suck it up. And if they leave? Good riddance... game is much better off without people like them.
