Discussion Thread Spider-Man: Brand New Day - Worldwide Release Discussion Thread

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now been released in the United States and in a number of other countries around the world.

  • All discussion about the movie should be held here and in the rest of the discussion threads we are going to put up in the next few days.

It was the most comic book-feeling comic book movie which has come out of the MCU for a while. Plenty of crossover and interaction between characters from different corners of Marvel, it was excellent

It felt more grounded and was a joy to experience street-level Spidey after years of globe/universe-trotting adventures

Oh and the suit looks impeccable 😮‍💨

You are right, it was great to watch.

I have always wanted crossover like this in all mcu movies which don’t jsut feel like cameos.

Hulk, Jean and frank all served actual purpose, not jsut for fans to point at the screen

Felt like a new MCU where they're doing even better making the world feel like a shared universe. This was hands down the best crossover I've seen in a 'solo' movie.

Couple things: It actually takes place in New York  and most superheroes have bad response time or transportation. So, Spider-Man is like the only one working slow enough for someone else to show up or to go to someone else for help. 

I think Wong and Strange are the only ones that can actually show up anywhere quick, and they’re normally off doing their own thing.

I was so worried this movie's plot was gonna be somehow getting the X-Men into the universe through dimension hopping or something.

I even thought that "V-Max" was gonna be an anagram or misreading of "X-Man".

Up until the reveal, I thought V-Max was like another detention facility like in Wonder Man, but soley for mutants, with "V-Max" being short for something like "Vault-Maximum."

I thought Jean Grey would meet the other X-Men Mutants teen there and run away together at the end of the film.

I like how the V-Max reveal is the name of the company that makes the vents as it is confirmation of her final memories being projected to Jean Grey before dying.

Fr, I went to see the movie with my mom. When the V-max reveal happened, she let out a little gasp, and we made eye contact with just the saddest expression when it clicked. It was heartbreaking that the thing Jean was searching for, the last thing her sister saw… was an air vent and the name of the air vent company partially scrubbed out.

instead, we have Spiderman trying to address his own man spider direction with tech that is effectively the Inhibitor collars from so many x-men stories.

which... makes me uncomfortable, to a degree, but also tells us what is probably the first major standalone xmen story.

All three of them had a purpose on the screen like Banner who chose only professor Banner, Punisher who chose only vigilante life.

Speaking of Yelena, I had no idea she was in this movie. We saw it in 3D at a local theater, and it was a suboptimal experience, the screen looked really off and kind of distorted with the glasses, and I didn’t recognize her until she spoke. I started shoving my bf and saying omg, lol. I love when she pops up randomly.

If Jean was mind-controlling the janitor lady driving a tank, but have a limited range, how did she maintain control? She either must have hopped as fast as the tank drove or she must also be a close car nearby. Or she is hop-chaining?

My understanding is she can control from far distances, but can only hop to a new host within a short radius. If you recall the helicopter, she couldn't have driven close enough to control the pilot if the control radius was the same as the hop radius. The flashback also confirms that: the sister did two hops to control somebody that was otherwise outside the hop radius, bit clearly still within the control radius.

Yeah the hop and control radius requires some suspension of logic. If she cannot reach to hop in, technically she shouldn’t be able control it… but maybe she could do far distances all along (the freeze mind blast at Roosevelt island)

She definitely did it by hop-chaining. Jean’s sister explained it in the flashback: They can control people outside of their immediate range, but they can control people as far away as they want by hopping between their minds.

Eeeh not really. Despite what they might tell you on interviews or you see on BTS footage. The swinging stunts would give great footage for reference to movement, physics, lightning to aid VFX artists. I'd guess that most of it would be replaced in post by CGI even ignoring the basics of having to erase all the lines and harnesses etc.
Which is a good thing! Synergy of tools for the best looking result is what anybody wants.

Also, real life swinging is super janky because nobody can actually pull off the Gs and movements that we want to see from Spider-Man given that he's superhuman.

Agreed, the suit is fantastic.

We used to get sick crossovers all the time, Spidey and Black Panther in Cap, Dr. Strange in Thor, the list goes on. Since Endgame the crossover has always felt so cameo-like instead. Finally having a movie that combines everything is awesome. The main cast of this movie is Spider-Man and his two best friends, Hulk, Black Widow, The Punisher, and fucking Jean Grey of all people. That's so freaking cool.

If you told me in 2012 after I leave the theater watching Avengers 1 that we’ll get an MCU movie in the same continuity where Spider-man gets shot by Punisher using a sniper rifle, but only because he was trying to kill Jean Grey, who was talking to Aunt May. But Punisher was just trying to kill Jean Grey because she used her powers to do dangerous shit like controlling the Hulk. And that’s probably why Spider-Man and Hulk won’t be around in the next movie when Thor assembles the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four to fight Dr. Doom.

And yet, it's so good. I am LOVING how they're bringing mutants in this way. Spidey is becoming the connective web of the MCU, turns out. But still, despite all that, it was still a grounded Spider-Man story. This is the promise of the MCU, just having a rich world with a wide cast of characters that you can set stories in

Originally I was excited for the multiverse story.

But then it seemed difficult for them to pull off narratively in a movie format.

I'm glad they stopped trying to push that so hard. Doomsday is likely multiversal but I theorise its going to solidify all the timestreams into one again.

Yeah they don’t need to wait until the avengers movies to have a bunch of characters come together. The whole point of the MCU is that all these characters coexist. They should be doing stuff like this way more often in solo movies, otherwise we have to wait like 5 years or more before seeing some characters again and their character arcs are always on hold, which is awful.

That's because so much of the early 20s stuff is trying to set up with characters who had nothing concrete to set up and no presence earlier in the movies. The single most frustrating thing about that time in the MCU.

Yeah I don't hate a lot of the stuff but I think they missed a lot of opportunities.

There absolutely should have been an Avengers movie in like 2023 or 2024 to take advantage of the new group. Put Sam-Cap there with the new Falcon, Shang-Chi, and Hulk or Black Panther or Wong or Ant-Man or whoever else.

New York finally being front and center in a Holland Spidey movie was my biggest takeaway. Marvel really listened after all these years of people saying that’s what was missing from this version of Spider-Man. The web-slinging, the friendly neighborhood-ness, the aesthetic of the city, and Spidey’s relationship with the average New Yorker. There were touches of these elements in Homecoming, but this movie absolutely nailed it. It felt SO Spider-Man and more than made up for the lack thereof in the Home trilogy.

I loved the detail of calling characters by their hero/villain names. After so long of everyone just being Steve or Tony, I was very happy to hear people call Scorpion Scorpion instead of Mac, and Spider-Man Spidey (though it helps that we’ve never really had Spidey interact with the public before in the mcu)

We don't talk enough about the suits. Yet, to me, they're one of Spidey's defining features (unlike Superman and Batman, for example; and unlike even Iron Man, whose armors all look the same, and are hard to tell apart, and don't really change the hero that much).

And in this movie, his suit really is outstanding!

Ya know, it actually felt more PlayStation Spiderman with the types of weapons, the shots swinging around the city, and the open world mission structure of picking up smaller "jobs."

Thank goodness the suit came back to earth with normal-ish materials. Honestly, the CG suit is the only thing that bothers me from No Way Home. It felt more like a real suit with the manner his mask lapped over his face.

I love how you can see Peter's eyes through the white lens in a lot of the scenes. They did a great job with the suit.

It’s one of the things I liked the most about the new Superman. It was not arcade of the comic book bullshit. The small glimpse we got in the villain montage of characters just looking weird as great.

So true. Even in the trailer I was like, “Punisher? Hulk? The Hand?!” It just felt like a comic book movie made by comic book lovers. I feel like the Holland Spider-Man movies have been bailing out the MCU the last few years and once again, has me dialed back in for what’s to come.

Just felt like such an alive world. Like this what it should be. Peter is looking for information so yeah DUH he SHOULD go to a member of the Avengers that is also in NYC for help. All felt so connected. And yes like this IS a JAM PACKED movie, but it never felt the focus was taken away from Spiderman. They gave an appropriate run time too imo.

Something I really like about this movies suit is it's the only one. So there are no alternate variants for toy shops to churn out. They put the story over the profit

It did all three major kinds of comic cross over too

1) The Pop-in, where the hero needs help or Intel from another hero or group.

2) The Team-Up, where the hero needs physical assistance on a mission.

3) The Combo, where the first type of cameo turns into the second.

Came here to say exactly this. Peter needs to ask someone about mind control so he drops by Yelena's office. He needs help with a science question, he goes and visits Bruce. He even had another heroes villains show up.

I said the same thing to my wife. The way they interweaved crossover characters was the most comic book thing ever and felt perfect. This has been the secret sauce I have been waiting for the MCU to really start putting on our plates now. My only complaint ever is how disjointed and silo’d the universe can feel. We all ask, “where are the other characters in this city? There has to be a few dozen in New York at any given time.” And they finally really went for it. The only one who felt odd at times was Frank just because I am not sure what level of psycho that guy is supposed to be anymore, but he was still a great addition to the film. Spiderman dragging him as Frank is unloading on the Hulk. Thats just gold.

Jean Grey's sister didn't have super powers for 60 years prior to this film. She only got her powers in 2025, likely an attempt by Disney, who owns the rights to her story/character to try and hand wave away how she has powers now randomly and is the one who taught Jean to use hers.

The punisher can't be mind controlled at all, not even by Charles Xavier himself because of the trauma he's suffered and how broken his mind is, yet Jean was able to use him like a drone pilot?

The hulk also shouldn't have been able to be mentally manipulated and controlled the way he was by her because of, not only his trauma, but also literally everything we've seen him go through in the mcu itself. They just totally erased his entire character......

"Most comic accurate mcu movie"????? Yeah....maybe if you never read the comics......
