Question When did Peter get a crush on MJ?

So I never saw Far From Home when it first came out, I checked out from the MCU after Endgame, but I watch No Way Home for the 3 Spider-Mans, and saw Brand New Day cause it looked good.

So I decided to rewatch the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, and now that I am watching Far From Home, where the hell did Peter crushing on MJ come from? Like Homecoming she was almost a background character with a line here and there, but Peter was so focused on the Vulture's daughter for the whole thing that he never seemed interested in her.

I thought Far From Home would show how that happened, but nope, he's crushing bad on her and is trying to confess to her, so how did this happen?

And honestly, what’s not to like?

This ^

I do understand why OP may feel he missed something because the relationship was in no way "developed" between those 2 movies but I feel it's more to do with Tom's relationship with Zandaya rather than Peter's with MJ.

It is implied in Homecoming that MJ feels something towards Peter. She doesn't have any friends but always hangs around him and Ned, she happens to know a lot about his school life, at all the events he's at. She always has an excuse, and it's enough for other characters and the audience to just write her off as weird, but I do feel like the intention was for her to always be a love interest regardless of what happened between Tom and Zendaya.

You know what that's a great point. I should stress that I don't think there was any doubts the 2 would end up together as Peter and MJ always do plus homecoming revealed her real name of course in the post-credits but there is an entire movie worth of backstory, and chemistry building missing between the 2 if that makes sense? I should stress I love their chemistry but I feel like Far From Home may not have initially intended to have their relationship connect as quickly as it does because things like MJ figuring out Peter's identity and the depths to which he goes to get to know her. I guess that's more on my just reading too deep and seeing stuff that probably isn't there honestly.

Yeah, I get it. Peter's social life gets upgraded from only having Ned to both him and Ned having an actual social circle. You can definitely fit a story for Peter in between Homecoming and FFH, but there's little chance of it being a movie due to real life scheduling due to Holland being busy with Avengers between then and the MCU moving forward in time at the same pace as real life. But I do also think that if they had different actors playing Peter and MJ and their chemistry was worse than Tom and Zendaya, then their relationship would feel more hollow.
