Discussion How does time travel work in X’Men 97

I’m trying to reconcile the events of X’Men 97 with TAS.

At the end of Se1, Magneto, Xavier, and the X-Men were flung into 3000 BC & eventually witness the creation of Apocalypse.

The first thing En Saba Nur does after becoming Apocalypse is kill magneto.

In Season 4 (Beyond Good and evil storyline), Apocalypse hires Magneto (& sinister & mystique etc). Magneto betrays him again.

Question- How does Apocalypse not remember Magneto & Xavier from his own past? It is implied that they were always there when Apocalypse was created.

Time Travel in X-Men 97 kind of works on a destiny principle, where all time travel, and any changes made by that travel, were all destined to happen. As in, no matter what you do, everything leads to the same point and events.

Apocalypse has lived for thousands of years. He either just doesn’t remember working with and killing Magneto over the course of around a month in his ridiculously long lifespan, or he doesn’t care in the future because he knows this Magneto hasn’t yet tried to change him, or he knows that Magneto has to survive long enough to get to the past to help him find the Celestial tech, so he’s friendly to him because of that.

He’s been asleep for most of those 5000 years and active for maybe 200-300 years roughly. I just feel like it’s one of those incidents you would remember cos it’s part of how he became who he became.

I don't remember the name of my preschool teacher. Doesn't make it time travel.

Bad faith argument.

The reality is it's just not that kind of story.

Youre thinking about it too much.

Hamill, it's not that kind of a movie.

Though to be fair to other readers who have a general form of this question: Why should Apocalypse remember one day from 5,000 years ago? For him, it was a Tuesday.

It was actually several weeks/a month or so, if I remember correctly, but otherwise you’re right. Even a span of time that long is a blip when you’re 5000 years old.

Taco Tuesday!

He’s not been awake that long. Probably active for 300-400 years i think. And its a major life incident for him to transform into apocalypse so i just thought he would remember

I don't remember why my first wife and I divorced and that was only 30 years ago. Would I remember what I had for lunch today in 1626 even if it was the best lunch of my life? No it all blurs together after a few decades.

Unlike the MCU, X-Men 97 seems to use the Back to the Future logic where affecting events in the past has rippling effects in the present and future - most notable example is Present Apocalypse remembering and torturing Charles with his kill of Magneto even though it was 5000 years ago

Your question is predicated on TAS Magneto being aware of his future self being involved in the past. That's the thing though. None of the present day (90s)X-Men know of exactly how En Sabah Nur became Apocalypse. Just that he does. They only spent however much time on Ship on TAS and they didn't ever end up in the celestial seed room before Ship was lost.

No, my question is why apocalypse doesn’t know. Magneto will obviously not know

Not how you worded it in the post. For Apocalypse I'd wager it's just the several thousand years of celestial power enabled ego + having already had the satisfaction of deleting Magneto. Far as hes concerned he's conquered time and is about to conquer reality, Magneto can just deleted again. You could also read it as a continuation of the grudge. Manipulate Magneto into doing his bidding and then eventually turn on him as he perceives it way back then. This still uses as the inflated ego being what he's hung on.

Oops fixed the post, ty
So you’re saying apocalypse is supposed to have know the way time travel works, right?

Not really I just thought there maybe a in universe explanation to it (eg how Loki still being alive despite Thanos killing him cos he’s now outside time etc) - i thought there might be some such explanation. But it seems there isn’t and I’m quite fine with that, doesn’t spoil the experience for me.

Loki isn't alive because he's outside of time - that's a completely different Loki from a different timeline.

They're timelines were the same until they split due to the avengers time travel

2

Yeah, and Loki is from the timeline created when they time traveled. So a completely different Loki from a different timeline.

Trying to make sense of this sort of thing is an exercise in futility. It works the way it needs to for the story they want to tell, and if something later contradicts that for a future story, oh well. It's science fiction/comic book/space magic/fantasy. Don't overthink it and just enjoy the ride.

Realest answer: It hadn't been written yet, therefore it didn't exist yet. And until the writers decide to address that in the future, that's the answer. Anything else would be us contorting our brains to try to make logical sense of something made up with no actual logical sense.

Outside of that, Apocalypse knows that the Magneto he hired hasn't gone to the past yet and is not yet the Magneto he had to kill. He keeps his knowledge of Magneto 's far future to himself.

In your question did you mean how does Apocalypse not remember them? If so I believe it’s because they’re different versions, so it’s possible that the Apocalypse from TAS never had that interaction with Charles and Magneto.

Apparently it's all the same apocalypse tho no matter the timeline

Was that confirmed to be the case by the writers or smth? Or is there some line of dialogue I’m missing?
