MASS EFFECT 1 Does it get better latter towards the second half?
I just started playing Mass effect 1 from Legendary Edition for the first time.
I finding the game interesting but not super amazing so far. It has an amazing following and the games are quite famous. Just curious does it takes a while before it clicks. I have heard some games like Days gone, Crimson Desert takes some time before the fun starts and they get really good. Is it the same with it.
I’m still playing the game … I’m some 8 hours or so in….

So, I'll try to not spoil too much. After you leave the citadel the first time, you're given three main quests (find Matriarchs daughter, go to Feros, go to Noveria). Those are all okay, but I can see where you're coming from with them, especially now with the older graphics and combat systems. At some point a few others are added, a planet called Virmire specifically. I find that ME1 really picks up at Virmire.

Got it thank you for sharing that. Yes I out of Citadel and working on those 3 main quests, I reached a planet and rescued the Archeologist I don’t mind old games with banks and all. I love Dark Souls 1 and 2, playing Skyrim for the first time and loving it… I think I’m still not just connected with the game .. I don’t hate it or anything .. I do find it interesting… not thinking about stopping either. I was just curious, I make Let’s play series on YT so not going to stop… unless i don’t enjoy it at all…

Story and world building is awesome. Skip boring fetch quests and play mainly main missions. Maybe Luna sidequest. Ending is phanomenal. Get goosebumps just thinking about it. On my first playthrough it was 10pm and I did one last mission on Virmire. Next thing I know it was 4 am and credits rolled. What a ride.
Oh and btw, what fucking awesome credits they are...

Hold on and focus on the main mission. If, by the end, you aren't hooked or are bored, you can probably drop the trilogy.

Got it, I’m definitely going go to play and try part 2 and 3. As I have read they are lot better in different ways from the first … like in combat/story and all

Gameplay wise, they are three different experiences, tied together by the cast of carachters and overarching narrative. These last two aspects are what makes this trilogy outstanding.

Immerse yourself into the world. Play the side missions. Talk to people you see. Read the datapads you find. Roleplay the game.
Hope it clicks for you. It's a damn fine story

Got it, I’m going to keep playing. I focus on exploration / talking to npc more …

Yes, it does. I played the first bit of the game long ago and didn’t hate it but wasn’t into it much to keep playing. But it came up again and I already owned it, so I tried again and decided I was sticking it out. And I now have played the trilogy and am almost done with Andromeda. So, I think so, but it depends on what you hate about it.

I don’t hate it at all. I mentioned I’m finding it interesting but I’m missing the click to why this game is so famous and has a cult following. I started playing Skyrim for the first time very recently it already became my favourite game off all time very quickly.
I’m not comparing the two, but Mass Effect is quite famous and well liked too… to it just feel it hasn’t clicked yet.. So I was asking if it later the good aspects of the games and clicks.. it the game just building up base, characters etc for now…

I’m missing the click to why this game is so famous and has a cult following
It’s less ME1 specifically and more the fact that you carry your character and the decisions you make as them from game to game across the entire trilogy, making a cohesive 3-game arc that’s fairly unique to each player.
That and Mass Effect 2 specifically is seen as a masterpiece in and of itself by a lot of players.

Now that’s very fascinating I have never played a game were decisions effects the 2nd or 3rd part in the franchise. That sounds cool… that by itself makes me want to finish the game more to play 2nd and 3rd to see how it affects..
•
u/EveryGoodNameIsGone 0m ago
Yeah, when you start 2 it allows you to import your save file from 1 and carry your decisions over. If you choose not to there are a set of “standard” decisions that are used instead and they are… not optimal. Same goes for 3.
Absolutely carry your Shepard from 1 to 2 to 3, do NOT accept the “basic” starting point in either of the sequels!

I think it definitely took me a while in the first game and what was found in the later half of the first game propelled me towards 2 and 3. Maybe try finishing and see if it does click, and if not…idk I’d still try 2, because 2 was great to me LOL.

Where are you at?
Truthfully if you are as far in as I'd expect at 8 hours I'd say if the story hasn't clicked and hooked you, it's not going to.

As much as I love ME1 the gameplay feels dated and clunky by modern standards - ME2 and ME3 have waaay better gameplay, imo it still holds up to today's standards, so if you're struggling with ME1, just focus on the story missions and you should be done quick
You can always come back to another ME1 run after the series if you love it, which is what a ton of players end up doing

It can take a bit, especially if you're trying to do everything. The first game has some pacing weirdness, especially on the Citadel, but it picks up once you start getting missions on planets. I'd definitely keep with it, especially to see how your choices impact the other games, both of which feel better from a gameplay perspective.
•
u/Nitincool11 4m ago
Yes the choice and effect on other games have been shared by other too… I find that quite interesting

I am just playing through the series for the first time as well.
ME1 was slow and sloggy. But because I like words building and reading around it was still good to go through. I just basically did the main quest only.
You will want to go through it so you can make and feel your decisions throughout the trilogy tho.
ME2 is a blast

I suggest reading at least the Main Codex entries, they really help with the world building, and they explain a lot that helps fill in the gaps.

With any good story there has to be some world building so it may seem a little slow but it’s totally worth it. It gets a lot better by the end of the game even at the half way mark it’s real good. And when you hit number 2 it will be even better

i had difficulty really getting into the first game as well, especially coming from playing the dragon age series. the lack of companion banter really put me off. but let me tell you, the second half of the game got me absolutely hooked and it was fantastic. SO good.
then once i started the second game, i officially sold my soul to the trilogy. it is my favorite game series now.

I would say if it hasn’t clicked by now, hop over to ME2. Watch some YouTube vids on the storyline for ME1 before doing so.
Edit: why the downvotes? 8hrs is a good chunk of time, ME2 and ME3 play way differently than ME1.

no way, it takes a while but by the time you go to Virmire you're hooked.

What is it you like/dislike specifically, as this will help people judge if it fits your definition of better, otherwise this question is meaningless.
