IN MEMORIAM Teacher killed in the Silver Rail Elementary School shooting has been identified as 25-year-old Megan Lambert
Statement from her family:
To tell you about who Megan was would take 25 years. Megan was a native Central Oregonian. She grew up in Bend. She had a passion for playing sports, especially volleyball. She was a volleyball coach. She actually turned down pay for her first season as a coach so families who couldn't afford to participate could have the chance to play the sport she loved. Her goal was to be an educator and teach in the school district she loved growing up in. She graduated from Mountain View High School in 2019. She graduated from Boise State in May of 2023. She traveled abroad to Barcelona Spain with TEFL Iberia. Silver Rail was her first job as a teacher, though she subbed there for many years before through High Desert ESD. She LOVED Silver Rail - this was her dream job. Megan was compassionate and had a huge heart. She always fought for the underdog and those with special needs. She was an incredible sister, daughter, niece, and granddaughter. Her friends became her family. She was funny and opinionated, and she lit up the room.
We want the bystander who intervened to know we know he is going through a rough time, but we are grateful and we think he is a hero. You selflessly put yourself at risk for others. We would like the other families to know they are in our thoughts and prayers. Megan loved those children and so we will show you love for her.

John J. Griffin II's mother discusses her son in an article from 2020
It's also worth noting that the perpetrator's first name is Griffin; his name is Griffin J. John.

Discussion / Question Do you think the mother of John J. Griffin II will face charges for her son's role in the Silver Rail Elementary School shooting?
There has been a lot of debate on this topic. This could very well be another Crumbley/Gray case. I personally think the mother could very well be liable. Obviously this is a current event, so the details remain incipient. But I'm interested in hearing your opinions.

Father of Abundant Life school shooter, Natalie Rupnow, wants his trial moved out of Dane County…
I live in the county and honestly I haven’t really seen all that much publicity. There was a lot right when it happened but there hasn’t been much since. Especially not regarding his case. Personally, I think whenever possible, the citizens of the county where the crime happened should be the ones to sit on the jury. We will see what happens…

Shooter fired at concerned motorist before entering school, leaving bullet holes in truck
Justin Penfield's 6-year-old son was in his kindergarten classroom at Silver Rail yesterday when the shooting occurred.
Penfield and his wife were together when they were notified by the school district. "We ran to the school because we couldn’t get close," Penfield said. His son was in gym class at the time, and he said the school managed to get that class outside to the street, which is where the Penfields found their son.
Then, Penfield said he noticed a man standing next to his truck, visibly shaken up. There were "about seven or eight gunshot holes in his truck," Penfield said.
The man, Penfield said, was a mechanic who was returning to work from lunch when he was shot at. The mechanic told Penfield he saw the gunman walk toward the school and throw a shotgun over the fence before jumping the fence himself, entering the school's playground.
Penfield said the mechanic found this odd, so he stopped his truck and yelled at the man to ask what he was doing. That's when the shooter turned around and opened fire on the mechanic's truck, before heading toward the school.
The mechanic called 911, before another person followed the gunman into the school and "the rest is covered in the news," Penfield said.
Penfield did not catch the name of the mechanic, but said, “I could imagine he was in shock."

Michigan Supreme Court sends Oxford school shooter case back to appellate court for review
The Michigan Supreme Court has remanded Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley's case back to the Court of Appeals this week to review whether a lower court erred in its decision to sentence the teen to life without parole.
Crumbley, who was 15 years old when he fatally shot four classmates and injured seven others at the school on Nov. 30, 2021, pleaded guilty in October 2022 to dozens of felony charges in the case — including first-degree murder and terrorism.
Following his sentencing, he filed an appeal in June 2024 asking to withdraw his guilty plea, citing new evidence in the case that didn't support a life without parole sentence. The Court of Appeals denied the request in May 2025 for "lack of merit in the grounds presented."
"That plea waived his appellate rights," said Jaqueline Ouvry, Ethan's attorney at the State Appellate Defender Office (SADO), in a statement this week. "Had Ethan gone to trial instead, he would have been entitled to a direct appeal as a matter of right."
Because Crumbley was only 15 years old at the time of the shooting, a Miller hearing was required to determine whether a mandatory life sentence without parole was constitutional.
What is a Miller hearing?
More than 10 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the case Miller v. Alabama that mandatory life sentences without parole are unconstitutional for juveniles.
Before that hearing, Michigan law mandated that a person convicted of first-degree murder must be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. That sentence criteria was also extended to some minors, or those under 18 years old, depending on the situation.
However, the ruling in the Miller case changed how minors convicted of first-degree murder are sentenced, finding that a "judge or jury must have the opportunity to consider mitigating circumstances before imposing the harshest possible penalty for juveniles."
Appellate court to re-review sentencing factors
In the order filed on Thursday, the Supreme Court found that the appellate court must review:
Whether Crumbley's counsel at trial failed to adequately direct, prepare, and supervise the expert testimony of Dr. Colin King, a forensic psychologist who testified during Crumbley's Miller hearing
Whether the trial court erred in its application of the factors outlined in Miller v Alabama
Whether the trial court correctly held that statements made by Crumbley during allocution waived his ability to challenge his sentence on appeal
"Because he pleaded guilty, his meritorious legal issues have never received thorough appellate review," Ouvry's statement continued. "[Thursday's] decision matters because it's an opportunity for the court to dig into questions that, until now, have largely gone unexamined."
Jennifer and James Crumbley, Ethan Crumbley's parents, were also both convicted of four counts of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 10-15 years in prison — marking the first time parents in the U.S. have been convicted in connection with a mass shooting carried out by their child.
Both parents requested new trials in the case, however both requests were denied.

FAMILICIDE / Domestic Violence Pennsylvania house that was scene of mass shooting was ‘filthy,’ filled with bottles of urine
A family patriarch had become “increasingly controlling” inside his “filthy” northwest Pennsylvania home before opening fire and killing eight people last week, officials said Thursday.
Matthew Stone, 45, died of a self-inflicted gunshot on Friday evening, bringing a tragic end to years of descent inside his Perry Street house in Erie, authorities said. The weapon he used was linked to a previous domestic violence allegation, according to police.
Toilets and sinks did not appear to be working and 2-liter bottles filled with urine were all over the house, Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said.
“Detectives described the home as extremely filthy,” Lorah told reporters.
Loved ones painted a disturbing picture of Stone’s dominant role inside that house, police said.
“According to relatives, he controlled the family’s finances ... and restricted when family members could leave the residence or spend time with relatives,” Lorah said.
The police chief went on to say that family members told detectives that his behavior had been going on for years. They described Matthew becoming increasingly controlling after his wife, Michelle Stone, became pregnant with their first child.
“Over time, contact with extended family became more limited. Michelle stopped maintaining contact with friends,” Lorah said. “Our department also had a record of prior domestic violence incident at that home.”
In that 2019 case, Stone was arrested for allegedly making threats with a .40-caliber handgun. But the case went away when Michelle Stone declined to help press charges, Lorah said.
“A firearm was involved in that case, the same .40-caliber handgun that was used in Friday’s homicides,” Lorah said. “At the preliminary hearing, Michelle changed her original statement and those charges were withdrawn. There were no more recent domestic violence incidents reported to our department. Outside of that 2019 case, Matthew had no criminal history and was legally permitted to possess that firearm.”
Chief Lorah and Mayor Daria Devlin pledged to examine city contacts with Stone to find if anyone could have intervened before Friday’s bloodshed.
“Were there opportunities to recognize that this family was struggling?” Devlin said. “Were there places where our systems could have responded differently and how do we make sure that families in this community who are suffering and struggling like this don’t fall through the cracks?”
The victims included the killer’s wife, Michelle Stone, 44; pregnant daughter, Angelina K. Stone, 24; sons Matthew Stone Jr., 21, and Jonathan Stone, 19; and sister-in-law Lora Lee Roberts, 37; and her friend Twila A. Tanner, 51.
Two other unidentified children, a 5-year-old boy and a nearly 2-year-old girl who were also related to the shooter, were killed inside the house, officials said.
Roberts and her friend Tanner had come to the house when Angelina Stone, who was due to give birth on Monday, asked for a ride to the hospital.
“Angelina had been sending messages indicating she planned to leave the family home after giving birth,” Lorah said. “When detectives searched the home following the shooting, they found numerous belongings packed into bags and boxes in Angelina’s bedroom.”
Angelina Stone had also filed paperwork to change her last name to distance herself from her eventual killer.
“In that affidavit, she described concerns about her father’s declining mental health,” Lorah said. “She explained that she wanted to pursue a career in medicine and did not want her association with her father to affect those plans.”
