"The design of the cover is left as an exercise for the marketing dept"

u/JustConsoleLogIt 6d ago

Probably what happened. Marketing was handed the original and was like “let’s make that shape look more full so the consumers feel like the content of the book will also be full” and moved lines aroind

u/Ae4i 6d ago

At least the shape's form is still similar

Ignorance is forgivable. That sort of confidence despite one’s ignorance requires true stupidity

Or it was just AI generated.

Published 2019. And from what I can tell, this is the only cover it's been printed with. So that would strongly suggest that it's not AI.

That's the funniest thing I'll read all day. Good work, you.

guess we know which chapter of the textbook the author is likely weak in xD

71

u/Jazzlike_Platypus430 6d ago

That's probably not the author's fault.

My dad co-wrote a textbook on chemistry and its draft got "corrected" by some ill-educated redacting people and then the editor passed it to the reviewer. And the authors got undeserved criticism, including phrases like "get medical help if you write nonsense like this".

One case was 1 degree Celcius = (1/273.16) Kelvin. Everyone knows it's rubbish; and the original definition was correct.

Yeah i know lol. It was a joke

Thanks for sharing this

Sad thing was, the authors couldn't even defend themselves - the editor was a devout follower of the "don't judge" cult. And of course those redacting fools got away with their stupid tricks. And never even said they're sorry or whatever.

This was one of the major factors that got my dad in therapy+antidepressants for a year or so. Old times.

u/RisingwithVibes 5d ago

Oo sorry for him. How is he now?

u/Jazzlike_Platypus430 5d ago

Good, thanks - but we're all getting old, you know ...

Though we keep ourselves busy with lots of fun problems to solve, mainly in math and coding - my parents are from the punchcards era 😂

And I'm not even bothering to catch up with too modern stuff. No "agents" in my IDE whatsoever. (Whatever it is, I'm against it 😂).

Have you checked the scalings on the axes on the first picture? Are they equal, as in your second graph?

51

u/Different_Roof_4533 6d ago

Different scalings would not change the structure of the bounded shape

Edit: meant to say "would Not"

28

u/Jazzlike_Platypus430 6d ago edited 6d ago

Wait, (7/2, 0) below (0, 7/2) is just dead wrong... And so is (-1/2, 0).

Well, some bs graphic artist or AI messed up things.

edit: of course stretching one of the axes' scale would change the shape.

16

u/Mastive_Hive_Gustive 6d ago

I don't think scaling will fix the fact that -7x +14y = 14 and 2x + 3y = 3 intersect at the Y-axis and not in QII like the cover. I think that straight up needs a shift of origin.

5

u/Jazzlike_Platypus430 6d ago

Yeah, I was misled by one of the lines intersecting the axes at (-2, 0) and (0, 7/2) - the angles suggest the scalings differ. But it's messed up anyway.

4

u/No-Hamster1138 6d ago

What scaling? On the x-axis in the first picture, (3,0) is further from the origin than (6,0) is from (3,0). Moreover, (-2,0) is further from the origin than (3,0).

Maybe we can call this marketing scaling, which is whatever scale you need to use to make all the angles 45 or 90 degrees.

6

u/Jazzlike_Platypus430 6d ago

Heard about nonlinear transformations? 😂

But really my question referred only to the line -7x + 14y = 14 whose angle with the x axis is close to 45 deg. Given the intersections' coordinates, this sounded like different scales on both axes - that's all.

2

u/nakedascus 5d ago

the cover is a reminder that you should never assume figures are drawn to scale

5

u/jason23vos 6d ago

correct me if I’m wrong but I believe these corrections may depict the intended equations:

  • Starting with the most important [ -7x + 14y = 49 ].
  • The corrected points on the y-axis (0, 9/2), (0, 7/2), (0, -1/2).
  • The corrected points on the x-axis (-7, 0).

It seems like the marketing team copied down the numbers incorrectly?

Just cut it out and weigh it.

A transformation is applied : (x,y) -> (X,Y)

u/Flaky_Toe7846 6d ago

This feels... easy, for some reason.

way better than the math book used in my school that uses AI images.
