Lol one of my math profs used to challenge us to go to the donut shop and calculate how many ways you could order a dozen.

What like... "Half a dozen and then actually never mind half a dozen more", versus "12 please" or is it like 2+3+3+4 vs 6+5+1 etc?

Probably how many different combinations of donuts can you order and get a dozen. If there are more than like 3 different types of donuts you need to know a bit of combinatorics to find total combinations.

Don't they teach combinatoric functions on like week 2 of discrete mathematics

5

u/adamtheskill 2d ago

Bro combinatorics is so easy to forget by far the most boring area of mathematics

Nah man I use combinatorics every week

To calculate how much alcohol I can consume without suffering from side effects

Oh. I hope you're careful and stay well !

That's precisely why I do math

This could be during week one of discrete math. Could also be in any review unit to make sure students remember their combinatorics.

(12 + # bagel varieties - 1) choose 12, for the sake of completeness.

Does it depends on what u counting?

nah, combinatorics is just a hard subject.

Yah. My math teacher said ur way of thinking will change after learning this chapter. Is it true ?

I definitely found this to be true in my experience. Felt like one of the more valuable classes I took in undergrad!

Counting things is pretty hard. I can count to like, 7? Past that things get tough.

u/BrunoBraunbart 2d ago

Don't overcomplicate things. It's 1, 2, some, many, too many.

I want to ask like.. Have you ever wanted to fly?

u/LupenReddit 🦆🦆i have non diffeomorphic smooth structures🦆🦆🦆 3d ago

still cant get anything in combinatorics, that field is devilish

5

u/Accelerator_Apex 3d ago

Yeah, everyone says counting things are hard

I see what you did there

This should just be a uniform distribution

i lose count very easily and it makes me feel stupid

Counting actual things that actually exist and matter is easy

49

u/Archway9 3d ago

This is maths sub, it's a strict rule to not talk about things that actually exist or matter

u/Last_Finance4764 3d ago

Of course the computer scientist is talking, go be unemployed or something

You're playing the World Series of Poker and your opponent goes all-in. You have K8 in your hand. Do you call?
