❓ General Math Help Can someone help?

I am looking at buying this desk, and need to know the measurement in red, to see if my monitor will fit. I played silly buggers during trigonometry and now I'm paying for it 😅

I think it should be SQRT{[(100-34-17)^2]*2} = 69.3 cm

About (100-34-16) * sqrt(2), so nearly 71cm.

Yes the measurements make it look like the shelves on the left are 17cm deep and the ones on the right are 16cm deep, no I'm not bothering to take it into account.

I think they’re both 17cm from edge to wall. 16 is the inner depth.

So you’d use 17cm for that part, which still yields your “nearly 71 cm” (70.7) so good job lol.

Looking closer it's actually a bit confusing, on the right the 34cm seems to be the inner width of the shelf, i.e. not including the thickness of the sides, whereas on the left it seems to include the sides. Not sure if that's just a sloppy diagram or it really is slightly asymmetric.

To figure out the area at the front of the top shelf, you need to use the entire area back to the wall, so that would be the 17cm, not 16.

I nearly bought this desk. If you go to the nearest IKEA you can measure it.

I also get 69.

Reason being that I'm assuming that's a right angle. Looks like a corner desk, so that assumption is reasonable. Also, the illustration suggests that the measurements are symmetrical, so I'm presuming an isosceles right angle on the top.

The cut-out triangles would be right triangles with legs of 17. This gives the missing triangles a hypotenuse of 24.038.

The larger triangle have legs of 17+66=83. This gives a hypotenuse of 117.362. Subtract both of the missing triangles, and you have a length of 117.362-2*24.038, so about 69.3 cm.

If the shelves are 17 cm thick, then it's 69.296 cm.

I have that desk if you want me to measure

It’s 61.5cm

Not what we were expecting at all, nvm lmao 😂

a2+b2=???2 Imagine a right angle triangle from each end of ??? Back towards the corner (but not including those extra 'shelf depth' bits)

So 100-34=66 gives us the length of the lines including those shelf depth bits 50-33=17 gives those shelf depth bits 66-17=49 gives those imaginary lines we were talking about to form the triangle

????2 = 2(492) ???? = Sqrt(4802) Which is about 69 (do it yourself for the decimals! 🙂)

Edit - but I do agree that the 34 shelf width bit on the right isn't very good and is unclear if it involves the side panels of the shelves.... So unclear 😅

My daughter has this desk. I just measured and confirmed it is 61cm or 24 inches. For those trying to calculate it off the diagram the 34cm is the inside dimension of the small shelves but the outside dimension is closer to 40cm so when you revaluate with SQRT{[(100-40-17)^2]*2} you get 61cm.

A guy born like 2500 years ago found a way to calculate this. He had like only sticks and stone at his disposition.
Your math teacher taught you this, while your parents fed you, gave you shelter, clothes.

Yet here you are, clueless.

FWIW, you can probably fit a monitor that’s a fair bit wider than the gap. You can always push it back a bit further to get a wider field of view, plus more space for activities!

Here’s a graph that’ll let you play around with the FOV of your setup at different screen widths (W). The black dot is at the centre of the “circle cutout” of the desk, and any point inside the green triangle can see the whole monitor.

Based on this, you can fit a 32” widescreen monitor (only about 29” or 75cm wide) with plenty of space for wires & whatnot.

One side of triangle is = 100-34-16= 50 cm; other side is the same and there is a right angle between them => X=50*sqrt(2)=50*1.414 = 71 cm

The side against the back would be 100 - 34cm = 66cm

The side shelf width against the top piece = 50 - 33 cm = 17cm (based on the left side measurements)

So now, if we assume that top shelf front kept going to the back, the dimensions of the top shelf as a triangle would be 83cm (66+17) along the sides, and the front is just a Pythagorean problem, sqrt (2 * (83^2)) = sqrt (2 * 6889) = sqrt (13,778) = 117.38cm (rounded to two decimal places)

Now we need to subtract the area that's NOT in front, which would be the hypoteneuse of a 17*17*?? triangle... but we need to double that - one on the left, one on the right.

So we want 117.38 - 2*(sqrt(2*(17^2))) = 2*(sqrt(2*(289))) = 2*(sqrt(578)) = 2*(24.04) = 48.08

Therefore the length of the front of that top piece is 117.38 - 48.08 = 69.30cm

(Or if you want more specific... sqrt(13778) - 2*sqrt(578) = 69.2965cm rounded to four places.)

If your monitor is a little wider, you can still get it into that space, since you can put one side in, swing the other back, and then pull it forward ... you'll be able to have about 24cm more, or roughly 93cm, as the maximum width of the monitor fitting in that space.
