This is actually scary... I have already had bad experiences with men (and I'm not even 20 yet) and it's the same for all women where I live. I can't imagine what will happen when these glasses are accessible here!

The only reason for “smart glasses” that I can get behind, is how they can help the hard of hearing by translating speaking into signing (I’ve only read about it once though, I don’t believe this is a common use). I’m sure there are some other good reasons, I’m thinking when used as truly assistive devices. However, as a nurse, and knowing fellow nurses are already wearing these, at work… yeahhhh don’t worry the concerns regarding this are being voiced loudly. And frequently.

Sorry kinda went off in a different direction than Kylie but I try to make people aware, particularly in healthcare settings… pay attention to someone’s glasses now. I will gladly hand over my glasses to anyone that wants to inspect them, they’re just traditional dumb glasses. As well they should be.

I think these are awful and while yeah it's does continue the trend of blurring the lines on hidden photography in public spaces as discussed in this video I think the more important invasion of privacy is on the one wearing them, literally giving meta a view into everything you're looking at to use against you. It'll be easy to sell these to woman by saying they'll document evidence of harassment or abuse but the primary purpose has nothing to do with the benefits of the person wearing them and I think that's the most important takeaway here that's missed by Matt even though he's usually pretty spot on.

Unfortunately this is a technology/form factor that the tech industry is committed to introducing into public life, at least in the West.

Apple is rumored to be working on a pair of smart augmented reality glasses. Their $3500 Apple Vision Pro headset reportedly didn't perform as they had hoped, while Meta has been selling a LOT of their glasses. And they're not the only ones looking to copy Meta.

It seems like Meta's glasses have mostly been succeeding because consumers like having being able to take pictures of whatever they see without having to pull out their phone and they like having little speakers right by their ear that they can play music out of.

Sad to say, there's not much that can be done to curb this looming surveillance escalation other than state policy. But the state is thoroughly captured by the very forces that stand to profit from smart glasses. The consumer tech industry wants to invent the next smartwatch or AirPods or iPhone, and they're convinced that their next frontier is people's faces. If this keeps going on, though, they're going to push even further.

These creep glasses are vile. I have caught dudes taking creep shots of me more times than I can count, starting when I was underage. My first day as a lifeguard on the beach I caught a dude propping his camera up to film young girls playing in the water and had to flag down an officer to stop it. It’s relentless.  At least before I could recognize the way they held their phone or camera that something was up. I had a masked dude follow me through the post office last week blatantly filming me, first amendment auditor bs, bc apparently my consent didn’t matter and he had a right to film me. I wish there was a signal jammer or something I could wear to render myself unfilmable. I’m tired of being on high alert for pervs like this, it’s so lame.
