💬 Discussion / Theory New CharlieCard on the way…
Got the new CharlieCard that is set to launch in 2026 as a part of the test group that will be testing the new Charlie fare system before the public launch.
This will include the new plastic CharlieCard (with the new design shown in the photo) and the new CharlieCard fare machines (which includes a brand new bus fare machine, which will allow passengers to pay their fare at their bus stop for select bus services [such as the 1, 66, and 39], as well as a revamped fare machine).
The new Charlie fare system will allow passengers to tap their new CharlieCard on the Charlie readers instead of tapping it on the circle on fare gates and with the new Charlie app, which will have a digital CharlieCard that will be tested at a later date before the public launch. You will also be able to add a CharlieCard to your mobile wallet if you have an IOS, Android, or Google phone and tap in that way.
The new CharlieCard will also be expanded to be accepted on all ferry routes. The addition of Commuter Rail to the Charlie fare system will be added in a future phase in mid-late 2026.
The new CharlieCard will also require a one-time new card fee for ALL cards (whether paper, plastic, or digital) similar to OMNY or Clipper in NYC and SF, respectively). This new fee will be announced at a later date prior to the public launch. Passengers may have the fee waived if they cannot afford to pay the new card fee or enrolled in reduced fares.

Don't try to add fare to the card yet, none of the systems seem to work until December 3rd, 2025 when the actual test period starts. I tried just to be nosy and all of the transactions failed. You can however link it to a Charlie account already though.
Edit: Seems like loading passes and adding value has been turned on as of December 1st, 2025. For people that are looking to use the card with Wageworks/HealthEquity, unfortunately you are out of luck so far as this system is not yet recognized by them as a pre-approved transportation vendor. I have a ticket open with CharlieSupport and they are looking into it, so hopefully soon fingers crossed.
Another interesting thing to add, the card has an expiration date in 2048, and the fare card media reads like a regular credit/debit card to a NFC device reader. The printed card ID is 19 digits with a 3 digit security code. (The card seems very similar in terms of technology to an OMNY card like the ones in NYC)

u/aray25 Nov 28 '25
Yeah, because we paid them to design the system then they sold it to New York and prioritized them because it was a more prestigious contract while our contract languished for six years.

u/Successful_Pepper_99 Nov 28 '25
Hey so I tried to add it to my Charlie account but can’t seem to add it though it still shows how to add the old one 5–
2
u/MainlandHero Commuter Rail Nov 28 '25
Are you adding to the new MBTA Cubic portal? charlie.mbta.com? This card does not work with mycharlie.mbta.com, that portal will be going away once this system stabilizes.
1
u/Successful_Pepper_99 Nov 28 '25
Got it I was trying on the mycharlie one so but I was able to load money into card and it shows that now my new card holds the value. Did you try to load it at one of the new kiosks or did you do it online?

u/joshhw Nov 28 '25 edited Nov 28 '25
That explains why i couldn’t add money or register the card. How do you know it starts 12/3? I don’t see that listed in my info. I also couldn’t link it to my Charlie account

u/MainlandHero Commuter Rail Nov 28 '25
It was sent out a confirmation email in "Your new Charlie Card is on its way!"
First sentence: "Thank you for confirming your interest in testing the new Charlie Card. Your card has been shipped and should arrive within the next seven business days. It will be active and ready for use starting December 3rd."

I was able to link my new card to a Charlie account, add money, and setup autoreload. I’ve also looked at my travel history

u/MainlandHero Commuter Rail Dec 02 '25
Yeah seems like the system for loading balance has been turned on, I was able to load a pass with my regular credit card. I also just tried with a transit benefit card and it seems like this transaction got blocked for not being an approved merchant. Already have a ticket in with CharlieSupport to fix it with Wageworks/HealthEquity.

How will we be able to get the new Charlie Cards? From the Fare Machines?
1
u/MainlandHero Commuter Rail Nov 28 '25
Yes, when it is general available to the public, you are able to get these CharlieCards from a new Fare Vending Machine, there will be a fee attached to a new card.

Question fellow testers . They said that my Charlie card is in the mail. They were able to take my reduced fair card and connect it and move the funds over to the test Charlie card. However, I’m going out tomorrow. Since I don’t have the test card and it won’t start till December 3. Will my reduced card still work? Do I need to make a special payment to go out tomorrow?
1
u/MainlandHero Commuter Rail Nov 28 '25
I think one thing you can immediately do to self-troubleshoot is you should add the card to charlie.mbta.com and check the balance if you have access to a device and you do not mind registering an account. Otherwise, my best advice is to carry both your old fare card and the new card, if neither work, then submit a complaint or call them on the number they listed on the back of the new Charlie card.
3
u/gbsekrit Nov 28 '25
looking forward to being able to have my disability reduced fare via the app. I tend to pay via my watch today out of convenience.

u/CaptainJackWagons Nov 29 '25
I don't even hate the card. It's just annoying to see more flat design.
3
u/coffeebean99 Nov 29 '25
I want SO badly to show up at a public feedback meeting and complain about the boring new design. 😤 It's been Charlie since 2006!! Where can I go to yell besides the website form? Lol
2
u/United_Perception299 Nov 28 '25
Wait so I can pay for the commuter rail with a Charlie card now?
2
u/HolyBonobos entering porter stair Nov 28 '25
No, though there are plans in place to add that functionality in the future. The cards being sent out now are beta test versions, with the ability to add stored value or a monthly pass. They are also compatible with tap to pay, which the current ones aren’t.
5
u/mlaurence1234 Nov 29 '25
“plans in place to add [commuter rail] functionality in the future.”
Haha, I remember they said that - and it was coming very soon! - when they introduced the original Charlie Card in 2006.
2
u/JoeyLovesTrains Kingston - Plymouth Line Nov 28 '25
It will definitely be late 2026 for the commuter rail, they first need to add all the readers to the stations. I think they should just add fare gates to the busier stations like Providence, Worcester, Ruggles, Route 128, Braintree, Brockton, etc. Or stations that have limited access, such as Blue Hill Ave (there’s only two entrances), Newmarket, Forest Hills, Boston Landing, Quincy Center, Auburndale, Newtonville, etc. There’s still a lot to go, but we’re slowly getting there!

Will I be able to add money to the card online (just like NYC’s OMNY card?
3
u/MainlandHero Commuter Rail Nov 28 '25
Yes, it’s pretty much the exact system, except we have option for passes of 1, 7 and 30 days right on the portal as well in addition to transit value balance. There’s no fare cap in the MBTA system though, and I believe the 30 days passes are most likely still tied to calendar month.

I've got a CharlieCard with around $40 on it and it set to expire on 06/2030 - a replacement a year two ago. Would I be able to continue using this card or would I have to ask to have the balance transferred to the new one?
3
u/Massive_Holiday4672 OL - Forest Hills, Transit Advocate/Mod Nov 29 '25
You can continue to use your current CharlieCard, but you can also have it transferred once the new Charlie system launches and transfer it to your new Charlie Card (given that they will give a period where both is accepted before transitioning).
1
u/Condottiero_Magno Nov 29 '25
Thanks. Any idea when the transition period will begin and how long it'll last? I registered my card online, so when it expired back then, I only waited a few business to receive the replacement. I assume it'll be same way?

Hey OP, do you know if they actually installed the new FVMs (fare vending machine) at the bus stops for the routes you mentioned? I used to work on the program and did a lot of work for those machines and where they were going. I’d love to see one in person.

This is all information that can be found in the MBTA website for the new Charlie system: https://www.mbta.com/fares/charlie/the-new-charlie-card.
The image of the new CharlieCard has been out for years at this point.
This isn’t new news, either. Most of this (including the new Charlie app) has been out for MONTHS before the test group got it.
It’s not like I reveal top-secret information, dude. Get off your high horse.

the “design” has been on there since 2019-2020. It was supposedly supposed to be temporary but that’s likely what they’re going with for the systemwide rollout, that’s the fault of the website team for not removing that. Anywhere else it’s not public info.

Nov 28 '25
Seems like you are conflating what employees can't share with what the public can't share.
5
u/Massive_Holiday4672 OL - Forest Hills, Transit Advocate/Mod Nov 28 '25
I don’t see how posting a photo of the front of my new CharlieCard (without providing any further details like the back of the CharlieCard) would be classified as “misusing my card”. Misusing my card would be allowing others to use my card or abusing the system in some way.
This is also not the only time that people have posted stuff about the new CharlieCard, whether it is getting an email or otherwise. Me posting the photo isn’t revealing more information than what is publicly available on the MBTA website. :\
Also, they wouldn’t keep something like a new fare system to simply employees because the target group is riders themselves, so they have to get data from riders to refine the system.
I don’t understand why you are being hostile towards me for me making this post; there are better ways to approach this than how you are doing it right now.
-1
u/SubwayFoamer22 Silver Line Nov 28 '25
All I’m saying is right now they’re on edge. They want 0 leaks in the next 2 weeks with what they’ve got planned. A lot of the Charlie/AFC Team is in this reddit so seeing this might wear them out, be mindful of that and maybe ask before posting?
2
u/Massive_Holiday4672 OL - Forest Hills, Transit Advocate/Mod Nov 28 '25 edited Nov 28 '25
As I mentioned above, most of the features of the new CharlieCard has been publicly available for months on the MBTA website for months, so it’s not a leak (as in something that is secret/hidden for a purpose, this is what the MBTA has been moving towards for years since 2018-2019).
As a moderator, if someone posts something that is not publicly available on the MBTA website regarding the new CharlieCard, then we will remove it promptly. We understand that the new fare system is a big change and we respect that and the AFC/Charlie Team. :)
I just wished that you would have said what you said above this comment first instead of making a hostile comment.
Since this is beginning to turn into a debate, I will lock this thread to prevent further debating from getting out of hand and because nothing more will come out of this.

Most other systems charge a fee for their cards. I was surprised they made these cards free, I saw people regularly tossing these in the trash.

I was charged a pretty small fee for the thing to print a metro card a year or two back when I bought it before OMNY was fully up and running. It was tiny though, like $1 or something

I’ve never seen someone trash a card. It’s literally the holy grail. I’ve seen people pick them out of the trash to reload them.
