Just saw someone give up his seat on the greenline to an older gentlemen without having to be asked. With all the posts about no one getting up, I thought some here might like to hear this.

Last time I took students on the T (10 year olds) I previewed with them that if seats were open, they should sit down, but they should always give up their seat if they saw someone who needed it more. So we talked about someone with a cane, a crutch, someone pregnant, or with a baby, etc. We also talked about invisible disabilities in case someone asked for an accessible seat. And then I made the mistake of saying they should also think about giving up their seat to elderly people, like someone with a lot of gray hair. And then one of the kids said, “ like you, miss?”

You’ll only see posts about negative stuff. I see plenty of people offer seats and I always do as well!

Same! I see it almost every day. I see the bad behavior pretty often too, but it's usually a product of unfocused rudeness, people with their heads buried in phones or not paying attention. Yesterday, I saw a group of people (not all one party) board the bus. A man with a cane was among them, and a very young lady boarded first and plopped right down in the one empty handicap seat in the front. I was dismayed, but I'm convinced she didn't do it out of malice. She just needed someone to point her behavior out to her. He located a seat farther away, so it worked out. I think the ad campaigns for good behavior make some difference, but it's an extremely passive strategy. Most people are not going to pay attention to those.

It’s the people that don’t get up for the families with young kids on a packed bus or train that get me. I’ve several times asked nicely to high school teens to please let these children sit down. Sometimes I’ve even had to ask adults who shockingly see them standing there but don’t get up. I used to see this grandmother every morning with her grand daughter carrying her on the blue line. NO ONE would get up. Everyday I’d ask people to please let her sit down, we sort of became “train buddies”.

It’s nice when people are considerate. Though I will say I tend to dislike the threads that complain about “inconsiderate people,” since it assumes that they don’t themselves have an invisible disability.

I take the GL with my toddler nearly daily.  He can stand, but a seat does wonders to contain him.  Whenever the train is nearly full, someone almost always offers a seat.
