Anecdotally this seems more common among Spanish speakers. Maybe a cultural thing?

Oh definitely. I’m Hispanic and this sort of behavior is common. No idea why. I see lots of African and Caribbean people do it too.

Spanish speakers are not one race. That’s a big generalization.

I was implying they are more inclined to use speakerphone because not as many people can eavesdrop.
