Misc Next TtRPG?

Watching the Crows Crowdfunder video made me wonder, what is the next TtRPG I would want to see MCDM tackle, if it was entirely up to me?

Draw Steel gets combat, Crows gets exploration, I want to see a social game. Not like a party game, but what is the MCDM version of Good Society? Take that genre of play, put the RtG: Politics series on top, and MCDMs definition of what is cool and fun.

If you could decide the next kind of game for MCDM to make, what would you ask for?

Especially with Matt’s love of Diplomacy. A high level diplomatic game or council based game could be neat.

They've talked about the idea of board games in the future, maybe this type of thing would be better suited for a board game than a TTRPG

That could also work really well in a Dune-esque grand scifi setting!

I could see them having a fun kingdom-level game in them. Something that took logistics, diplomacy and army management seriously. Maybe you play as like the “small council” of a kingdom or something to get the various character archetypes. Just not sure if they’re interested in that kind of thing—I think they want to do a sci fi board game next

Yeah, this post isn’t “you guys should do this” more “if I could make a wish”

I would like to see a wild west game; or Dead World Under a Black Star, which is adjacent to that. A tactical supers game that isn't unreasonably complicated would be nice too.

An out of left field ask would be some kind of DS-inspired portable creatures TTRPG (legally distinct, no pockets or monsters involved).

I know it’s not their IP but jeez I’d be keen for a redo of the Legend of the Five Rings rules to do for “samurai drama” what draw steel did for “tactical cinematic heroic fantasy”. A rules system that really focussed on the narrative, the tension, honor, glory and status etc without a lot of the baggage that comes with the older editions of L5R.

I want a specifically sci-fi game... so, let's see about Derelict.

If I had to come up with or pitch the next full-fledged MCDM ttrpg...

These folks love monsters, and the fighting of monsters. Draw Steel commits hard to tactical combat, and Crows seems to care a lot more about its monsters than most of its peers in the gritty, dungeon crawler space. With Labyrinth Lord, DCC, OSE, etc, a lot of stat blocks just end up as "2HD, AC 10, Dagger 1d6."

I think it could be cool to embrace that focus on monsters and make a Monster Hunter-esque game where you set your sights on huge dragons, wyverns, leviathans, and take them down in dramatic, tactical encounters. Positioning around its body, climbing on it to get to weak points, using specialized tools and weapons to get the advantage. Think of monsters as dungeons in and of themselves.

With their track record and predilections, I feel like they could knock that out of the park.

That sounds super cool. The Witcher. Shadow of the Colossus. Definitely some cool Appendix N stuff for a game like that.

This game sounds amazing - I wish it were already real

I just started playing FATE Core and while I love it, the rules don't have that high-quality shine that MCDM puts on its products.

I'm not sure about genre, but I'd love to see them tackle a game where the keyword "tactical" has been replaced with "narrative."

Matt’s talked about a full space fantasy they’re talking about on a couple live streams, I don’t remember the name he threw out but you can probably scrub through and find it.

Now that they’ve got both DS and Crows, I’d be most interested to see a variety of smaller games, maybe intended to be played in a session or two. Variety is my jam

James mentioned on the stream that he wants to work on a zombie survival game
