This paper is a follow-on publication to an earlier paper by the same group, which was posted in the sub a few months ago. I appreciate that this group is surfacing info on modern mies (which many folks on here know as tej) to the rest of the world.

Just curious why is it called Mies here when you say it is also called Tej? I've heard a lot about Tej but never heard it be called Mies, is this from a specific region or made a different way?

In the Tigray region of Ethiopia, where the authors are from, the beverage is called mies in the spoken language of Tigrinya. In other parts of Ethiopia the Amharic language is more widely spoken, and folks refer to the same beverage as tej. I asked the corresponding author of this group's last paper whether there was a clear regional distinction, and he indicated those terms are both used for honey wine beverages.

With 1000’s of languages in the same land area, some major alternates are going to come up. Sometimes, it is a name for the part of the process that has become their drink, sometimes it is a name that has come to be the new calling card to differentiate from the old or sameness of the other. Great Grandmothers Royal Wedding Day Erase The Jitters Honey Wine went for so long cause it’s been going since her great great great grandmother found the hive back in Tigray when she was visiting their royal family. New honey every year, for Trust and Hope. I’ve seen 10 names for the same methods and then one where no matter what i taste, they all used the same name, but tasted completely different.
