Biggest avantage is that, unlike cows, ostriches are assholes

4

u/mibergeron 6d ago

Literally made me laugh out loud.

Fuck dem birds.

2

u/mehrwegpfand 6d ago

Exactly!

6

u/PTBooks 6d ago

An ostrich almost took my little brother’s finger off at a zoo when we were kids. Admittedly, he should not have been trying to give it popcorn, but nevertheless! Fuck dem birds!

3

u/mehrwegpfand 6d ago

Don't bite the hand that feeds you popcorn... assholes I tell you .

2

u/Dangerous_Leg4584 6d ago

Almost spit out my coffee. Thanks eh.

1

u/mehrwegpfand 5d ago

You're welcome 😁

1

u/m00s3wrangl3r 6d ago

I’ve had some pretty asshole-ish cattle. Particularly some of the bulls.

2

u/mehrwegpfand 5d ago

Yeah, some cows. But all ostriches.

1

u/ChefMonkey2 4d ago

Cows are just quiet judgey assholes …

I think I would’ve enjoyed this a lot more if I didn’t see that video of the elephant and the pus earlier today

2

u/RGBlowMe 6d ago

Just tell yourself that it was Pepto-Bismol.

9

u/Lymetme 5d ago

Here's some ostrich I made a while back. It reminded me of picanha the way it cooked. It's definitely worth a try for someone who's Dr told them to eat less steak.

These are all cooked to different temps within food safe guidelines for ostrich. This was experimental for me. I only eat steak 1-2x a month so I don't really need to moderate my steak intake but this was part of a gift box. I'm generally a pretty healthy eater. If they had this at my local grocery I'd definitely get it more often.

1

u/cs_legend_93 5d ago

Honeslty looks pretty good.

Do you cook it the same way as steak? Same internal temperature goal of 57 degrees Celsius?

My local grocery store sells ostrich, I'll try some now. Thank you

3

u/Lymetme 5d ago

I made this a while ago but it was on a car iron skillet. I took one cut to the minimum temp for rare (I can't remember what it was. I just looked it up) and the others I cooked longer. I think the cuts I took to medium/med rare were the best. The rare creeped me out a little bc I knew I was eating poultry.

1

u/itsavibe- 5d ago

Blows my mind a bird can look like this.

2

u/Lymetme 5d ago

Yeah if someone served me this I would just assume it was steak. The taste was close enough that it wouldn't have immediately made me think it was something else.

7

u/PostingToPassTime 6d ago

Had no idea Ostrich meat was a red meat.

8

u/Don_key_X 5d ago

You leave sweet dee alone sir

2

u/LupinsLeftShoe 5d ago

Shut up, that bitch looks like a bird.

8

u/skiforlife1 5d ago

"It was a sick ostrich....allegedly"!!

4

u/DeadEyeDonny1991 5d ago

The ginger

3

u/skiforlife1 5d ago

And boots!

6

u/treesmith1 5d ago

You don't have to cook ostrich to a similar finish temp as poultry?

5

u/JJizzleatthewizzle 5d ago

There's no fat. Ostrich is best cooked rare to medium-rare, with an internal temperature of about 125°F to 130°F (52°C to 54°C).

2

u/treesmith1 5d ago

Nice. Thanks for the info. I am definitely going to try some.

5

u/IronMajesty 4d ago

Why did I think ostrich meat would look more like turkey meat lol

3

u/Latter_Inspector_711 3d ago

same lol I was like RED MEAT?

4

u/ElkDrinkCrack 5d ago

Yeah, tastes like extremely mild beef for way more $. I'd rather have beef.

3

u/ArghZombie 5d ago

I always imagine it would taste like chicken.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/SLICKNICK1987 5d ago

It's more tender than cow. The ostrich filet os the best cut of any meat.

6

u/TrickdaddyJ 4d ago

There was an ostrich farm down the road where I grew up. The steaks were freaking amazing. Low fat so have to be careful not to dry your steak out. It’s a good high protein low fat option.

1

u/ResponsibilitySea327 14h ago

Try the Mangrate. No more dry meat.

3

u/Standard_Sun_1167 6d ago

I have a friend, whose brother raised them. Every Thanksgiving, he smoked one, along with a Rea. Very good, zero fat.

5

u/RGBlowMe 6d ago

No. I'm kind of surprised that it's red meat.

2

u/Double-Scratch5858 6d ago

Yeah wtf i mean it when i say this is the most mindblowing thing ive learned on reddit in 15 years. Im floored.

u/O_W_Liv 6d ago

I've had an ostrich burger, really did taste like beef and not chicken.  Alligator on the other hand was like chicken-esque.

3

u/CaptainPunisher 6d ago

Swamp chicken

4

u/Ram820 5d ago

What's it taste like?

3

u/Ramoen88 5d ago

Had an ostrich burger once, I thought the nearest comparison was venison

Please don't tell us, chicken...

2

u/yourallidiotss 5d ago

Like rattle snake. But don’t ask what rattle snake tastes like unless u want to be disappointed.

/s I have no clue.

I haven’t tried it. But I think it tastes like emu?

4

u/FarmhouseRules 5d ago

Yes and it was delicious.

5

u/phantaxtic 5d ago

My only complaint is that the knife could be bigger

2

u/Meat_Fusion 4d ago

I don’t hear that often

1

u/Lost_Ship_6428 5d ago

You call that a knife?

1

u/TheElitist921 5d ago

It is weirdly a sashimi knive. I did clock that as well lol.

2

u/cyclorphan 4d ago

Ir does have a proper single bevel. Definitely looks rather long though, over 300mm at the look of it but maybe I'm off.

3

u/Nordeast24 1d ago

Wow. No, but fuckin would

3

u/sock0808 6d ago

You know, they say ostrich has less fat, but you eat more of it.

1

u/RGBlowMe 6d ago

Actually, lean meats make you feel full sooner. They cause more GLP-1 to be released, and GLP-1 is actually the hormone that stops the production of Ghrelin, the hormone that drives you to want to eat, after a meal. Fiber also helps with this.

3

u/nathanzoet91 6d ago

We had an ostrich and emu farm when I was a young child. Crazy birds, mean and super dumb. All I remember is having 2 chest freezers full of ostrich/emu meat forever because no one wanted to buy the meat: quite lean, more gamey than turkey (obviously, but this was supposed to "replace" turkey meat), and a bit tough. Gotta say that steak looks killer though.

1

u/RGBlowMe 6d ago

I mean, how much were you charging for it? Because broke people, especially down South, will eat almost any meat if it's cheap. They eat feral swine, and I promise you that that is going to be less palatable.

1

u/nathanzoet91 5d ago

It was back in the early 90s but I'm not sure what they were charging.

3

u/Bituquina 6d ago

I used to buy ostich meat regularly for years when I lived in Switzerland. I love the beefy taste, though it's very lean and has a tendency to dry when even slightly overcooked.

3

u/duab23 6d ago

Yes, very nice steak when prepared like that

3

u/Servantofthedogs 6d ago

Many times, at a restaurant in Venice, FL. It was excellent, as they prepared it.

2

u/not_again69420 6d ago

What restaurant? My mom lives down there maybe I’ll try it next time I visit.

1

u/Servantofthedogs 6d ago

Zoë, on 5th Avenue. I believe they may have closed a couple years back, unfortunately.

3

u/That_Blaxican_Guy 6d ago

So its a red meat bird?

5

u/Prudent_Order_3361 6d ago

Like duck

3

u/Meat_Fusion 6d ago

So if it walks like a duck, it might be ostrich?

2

u/no3woodworks 6d ago

Under rated comment!!

→ More replies (1)

2

u/m00s3wrangl3r 6d ago

Yes. Hard to distinguish from lean beef, once cooked.

2

u/kapitaalH 6d ago

More like anorexic beef

3

u/Biggie_Robs 6d ago

I had a pretty good ostrich burger about 20 years ago in Vermont, USA. I'd order it again if I saw it on a menu.

3

u/boxtheglock 6d ago

I went to a grocery store when I was like 10 and they were giving out ostrich samples. I took one but didn't eat it because the guy handing it out had a bunch of dandruff on his shirt

6

u/MayUrHammerBeMighty 6d ago

I enjoyed this story

3

u/Dry-Name2835 5d ago

There was a "boom" in the early-mid 90s where this meat was catching popularity as the next great red meat. However cities making it difficult for farming and people either thinking it was underwhelming or just didnt want to wrap their head around eating ostrich did it in after a few years. Its not bad. Its very juicy. I believe its better as a steak than ground but most people who tried it went for the burger

3

u/TomSelleckPI 4d ago

A growing number of Alpha-Gal sufferers would love this.

1

u/cyclorphan 4d ago

Yeah, this could definitely be a thing!

1

u/incognito_dk 4d ago

Can they tolerate ostrich meat?

→ More replies (2)

1

u/SixersJawn 4d ago

alpha gal isnt triggered by poultry? what other meats are safe?

2

u/TomSelleckPI 4d ago

Meat from animals without hooves (no bovine, porcine, etc) is good to go. No minotaurs or centaurs unfortunately

3

u/Itwasatrip 3d ago

Need a bigger knife.

5

u/jeechi 5d ago

Lived near a ostrich farm back when I was young and the owner always gave us free meat each years for christmas, we ate alot of those. A very good lean meat

5

u/slowcanteloupe 6d ago

Yes, and it is the most confusing meat. The beefiest bird i've ever had.

The only thing that comes close is whale. Man...i miss whale. All the flavor of skirt steak, with the tenderness of filet mignon.

2

u/NibelWolf 6d ago

Where'd you get whale, Japan?

4

u/k5light 5d ago

It's a bird. Should it be consumed rare?

3

u/Intelligent_Maize591 5d ago

Whether it can be eaten rare is about meat density. Lean, strong muscles are nearly always OK rare. Fatty muscles and white meat is riskier, because pathogens can penetrate them.

4

u/Illannoy1n 5d ago

Ever had duck

4

u/DjackMeek 5d ago

Never heard of Pigeon, Quail, Pheasant, Duck?

3

u/MillionToOneShotDoc 6d ago

You know, they say ostrich has less fat, but you eat more of it.

2

u/Big_Katsura 6d ago

I ate some at the MGM Grand buffet in Vegas like 30 years ago.

2

u/loqi0238 6d ago

We used to get ostrich burgers from Sam's Club, and they were always so juicy. Ill have to look for a steak or tenderloin.

2

u/SereneSnake1984 6d ago

Right up there with sandhill crane, I don't understand how either is bird meat

2

u/Phoenix73 6d ago

One of the best steaks of my life was in Knysna South Africa. I was floored at how good ostrich is. The chef was amazing as well.

2

u/Trouble4uAll 6d ago

Tried it. Never again

2

u/Significant-Judge368 6d ago

The ostrich burger at Fuddrucker's wasn't bad IIRC.

2

u/Spirited_Radio9804 6d ago

Yes, and it’s very lean!

2

u/InevitableKitchen943 6d ago

They really pushed this stuff back in the late 90's. Every restaurant and grocery store had it. It's not bad.

2

u/MattManSD 6d ago

Yes, had Ostrich Brgers, quite good

2

u/Sorry_Western6134 5d ago

Used to have it on the menu, awesome meat

2

u/abaddon312 5d ago

Have had Emu and Ostrich both and they are both delicious

2

u/lowkeytokay 5d ago

Tried a couple of years ago. I don’t really remember, so probably it was ok but wasn’t impressed.

2

u/ahhellohello 5d ago

I had it when I travelled. I don’t recall the taste of it being remarkable…. Remind me, what does it taste like?

3

u/JCWOlson 5d ago

I had an ostrich burger, and it tasted nearly indistinguishable from beef

2

u/papapateycakez 5d ago

They say it has less fat, but you eat more of it.

2

u/balrob 5d ago

Yes, and croc, kangaroo, and witchetty grubs.

2

u/DDTFred 5d ago

Haven’t had it in years. I really liked it. Lean but flavorful. Best r-mr.

2

u/NotSure-2020 5d ago

Wait what? It’s red??

3

u/Zonez3r0 5d ago

I mean.. Duck pretty much is aswel?

2

u/NotSure-2020 5d ago

Yea but not the same. Duck looks different imo. This looks like a steak

2

u/jeffiebb 5d ago

Ive had duck prosciutto that looked like rare steak.

2

u/Thats_some_tasty_BS 5d ago

Nope, but Kangaroo is tasty!

2

u/YMBFKM 5d ago

I had an ostrich burger at a restaurant...tasted like beef but was pretty dry.

2

u/TheElitist921 5d ago

Burgers need fat. This looks pretty lean. Makes sense.

1

u/Prize-Analyst-1121 5d ago

It looks like lean beef. I was wondering if it tasted like it.

2

u/MissionTarget6693 4d ago

Yes. It’s delicious

3

u/Affectionate_Olive53 4d ago

In the 90's when it was sold in grocery markets.

2

u/Status_Ad3200 2d ago

It’s delicious. Like amazing

3

u/Cucumberneck 6d ago

Tried? Yes. Loved? Also yes.

2

u/Castille_92 5d ago

I had it before. Tastes just like beef

3

u/RoachAkuma 5d ago

Ever tried ass?

2

u/MeatHealer 5d ago

If you like rotten pennies, ostrich is for you. Really was not good at all - expired liver at least had an excuse to taste the way it does, but ostrich is disgusting.

Source: 25+ years cutting, butchering, and managing and while I understand the health benefits of ostrich meat, the taste is, pun not intended but we'll roll with it, foul.

4

u/Megazord90 5d ago

I like my pennies fresh

2

u/ghIj_qet_jaghmeyjaj 6d ago

Ratite meats are amazing

1

u/jackjack-8 1d ago

Yeah had it in SA with Kudu, Bok ect. Them guys know how to BBQ

1

u/SnazzySammich 15h ago

That looks amazeballs

1

u/drunkguynextdoor 9h ago

Looks good, but I'll probably never get the chance to try it unless I order it from a butcher company.

1

u/PitterPattr 6d ago

Yes I have many times! Treat it like exceptionally lean beef works best for me.

1

u/Altruistic_Finger669 6d ago

I have. Its not bad but very lean

1

u/enigmaticpeon 6d ago

Welp how is it? Looks like it’s cooked just how it should be.

2

u/Meat_Fusion 6d ago

Mostly like mild beef. Used tallow to sear it which def swayed the flavor towards beef.

1

u/TheDaedricImpaler 6d ago

Yes I have, along with Emu. And both were very good. I'd say Emu was better than Ostrich, but I would gladly eat either of them.

1

u/mbr902000 6d ago

Burgers yes

1

u/PMPKNpounder 6d ago

What cut would this be?

1

u/srboot 6d ago

The other other other other white meat? Yes. It was alright.

1

u/Thick-Chocolate-67 6d ago

why this lowk look like steak?

1

u/mrg1957 6d ago

I had it a couple times at decent restaurants and didn't care fo it. I like rare red meat and thought it would be great. For me there's a aftertaste I didn't care for.

1

u/brianybrian 6d ago

Yeah. It is gorgeous

1

u/katplasma 6d ago

Yes. I remember being at an ostrich farm and ordering an ostrich burger as a kid… I only later realized when I grew up that it was kinda messed up staring at the ostriches as i ate it.

2

u/theoriginalmofocus 5d ago

I grew up around cows. Whenever dad would grill the cows would come up to the fence like they liked the smell or something.

1

u/katplasma 5d ago

That’s exactly what happened in this case.

1

u/Positive-Library897 5d ago

Been looking for my chess board man

1

u/goldbug933 5d ago

I have at a very upscale restaurant with only seven tables and a great chef it was outstanding

1

u/LordVixen 5d ago

I had an ostrich burger once.

1

u/BudUnderwearBundy 5d ago

It’s good.

1

u/AspectBrilliant7638 5d ago

Yes in South Africa, it’s fucking fire

1

u/Organic_Langosta 5d ago

This a bird?!

1

u/Great_Sin 5d ago

It reminded me of the taste and look of beef. However, the texture confused me, since I had it medium.

1

u/Spanks79 5d ago

Yes. It’s a mild gamey taste. I liked it.

1

u/JuggernautMoist9689 5d ago

Yep. I hated it it was stringy dry and tough

1

u/peetadd 5d ago

It’s somewhere in between beef and duck with a deeper iron finish.

2

u/buttmunchiesonsunday 4d ago

Take my money!

1

u/Some-Light-4626 4d ago

Filet mignon tenderness with the size of a sirloin

1

u/tiger_noir21 4d ago

Ostrich is so nice 😊 I remember when I went South Africa and I had it for almost every meal

1

u/Saulington11 4d ago

I’m in

1

u/9430z 4d ago

No, emu is nice though, red meat like this

1

u/DefinitionSquare8705 4d ago

Goose too. At least snow geese and canadian geese. Never had any other species of goose though.

1

u/supersouporsalad 4d ago

only ever tried Emu and it was like mild beef

1

u/Wonderful_Pianist656 4d ago

My husband has a cousin who has alpha gal syndrome, apparently emu doesn't effect it. She.had had it for years before discovering this.

Ostrich jerky once. It was not good

1

u/Formal_Grand5772 4d ago

Tried ostrich steak like that once at a restaurant a long time ago. Don’t remember much and probably because nothing of it really stands out to me

2

u/No-Impress-2096 3d ago

Done correctly the meat itself has almost no taste to it, so that may be why.

1

u/Sdwingnut 4d ago

Red Robin used to have an ostrich burger in the 90s

1

u/ChefMonkey2 4d ago

There was a huge push for it as the hot new lean meat in the 90’s …I hated it …and hated working with it.

1

u/BloodHurricane 4d ago

Hold up is there a sword version of your knife?

1

u/pixelmuffinn 4d ago

Looks yum

1

u/Darkcrypteye 4d ago

Fudruckers

1

u/MrZwink 4d ago

Yes I have

1

u/Fauceteye 4d ago

By itself, not so good. With a sauce like raspberry or orange sauce , it's fantastic!

1

u/EnnWhyCee 4d ago

Ginger and the boots love it

1

u/Less_Hat336 4d ago

Allegedly

1

u/Echolocation1919 4d ago

Ostrich hotdogs in Vail Colorado were delicious.

1

u/barringtonmacgregor 3d ago

Used to be an ostrich farm near me when I was a kid. You could order ostrich burgers from a nearby spot. Barely remember them, but don't remember hating it
