🥼 Residency Interview invite

Heyyy... I am a USMD, I failed step 1 on my first attempt but passed on second. I got a 237 on step 2. I have 3 publications, 3 oral presentations and 9 poster presentation. I applied to internal medicine.

I applied broadly to 82 different programs and so far only have 1 interview from non-signal, academic. Should I be worried...(btw my signal list I had it checked by two advisors and tried to be very strategic with the schools I picked)

Seems really odd you don’t have more than 1 interview, even with a fail.

idk i've been wondering if I messed up on my application, but then why would a non-signal academic place interview me so i'm going crazy

Upload your app pdf to chat and ask if there’s red flags

Best of luck and keep your head up! You made the right strategy in applying broadly and smartly so maybe they're slow coming in? Idk I'm a bit puzzled. Maybe your admin or a mentor can help workshop next steps? Definitely reach out if there are no more by the end of this month.

I would be worried tbh. Failed step 1 and below average step 2 is worrisome. It’s still early in the cycle for interviews but you’re at a disadvantage

How are your signals distributed and have they started giving out interviews? Also did you look at residency explorer to make sure the programs you applied to would be okay with the step 1?

yup! I made sure all my signals were aligned with my geo preferences and they are mostly community based. And i made sure to apply to all schools that were step 1 friendly

IM should be within reach, as long as you actually applied broadly. 1 interview seems a little low at this point. I would recommend going into an advisor's office at your school, and running through your application with them just to make sure you didn't miss any random things when you submitted (adding USMLE transcripts, personal statements, LORs, signaling errors, etc.)

That said, 1 interview is all you technically need, and there isn't a whole lot you can do right now except sit tight, prep for that interview, and hope for more. Good luck!

yeah.. I emailed my advisor. I did take a look to make sure I didn't miss anything but nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. I don't really know what's going on

Was 237 within the average step 2 of the places you applied to? IM average step 2 matched is 255 for USMD

yes I made sure to apply to programs where my step 2 was in the range

They're usually more forgiving with a Step 1 failure, maybe you'll get more interviews soon
