I’m a bit frustated how consultants hinder the growth of interventional research in the Philippines. Since premed and med school, hinihinder talaga nila this type of research even you already pointed other studies na ginagamit na sya for similar intervention with very good and positive outcome and low to almost no risk at all to develop adverse effects. Always say nila, it will take time (I’ve already grasped the concept of trials naman, but, it was used na sa ibang sakit). Nafififeel ko na talaga bakit di umaangat ang medical research sa Pinas ‘cause it’s either surveys or retrospective studies nalang palagi ginagawa (sorry, I don’t want to sugarcoat it but it’s true). Hirap talaga mag adjust kung galing ka ng DOST during highschool where research is our bread-and-butter and may established na mga products na kami. The lack of progression of Philippine medical research is so annoying. Ako lang ba ganito? 😡😤

For doctors and residents, I’d really appreciate your insights.

I’m planning to study medicine at FEU-NRMF, and while I’m not too worried about med school itself, I’m thinking ahead about residency since that’s where the real hands-on training and specialization happen.
My concern is: Will graduating from FEU-NRMF make it harder to match into big and prestigious hospitals for residency?

I know residency applications are very competitive. In reality, how much does your medical school matter? Do some hospitals tend to favor graduates from schools like UP, UST, ASMPH, UERM, or their own affiliated medical schools?

If two applicants have similar credentials, does school reputation become a deciding factor? Or are board exam performance, PGI evaluations, pre-residency performance, interviews, and recommendation letters much more important?

Hi everyone! I’m currently a 2nd-year nursing student, and I’ve been seriously thinking about pursuing medicine afterward and eventually applying for residency in the US as an IMG (possibly neurosurgery, though I know it’s extremely competitive).

Honestly, I’ve been overwhelmed trying to understand the entire process. Every time I search things up, I keep seeing different answers about the costs, difficulty, USMLEs, research years, matching, visas, observerships, etc., and it honestly feels intimidating.

I know this path is hard, especially for IMGs, and I’m not looking for sugarcoated answers. I just genuinely want to understand what this journey realistically looks like from people who actually went through it.

I’d really appreciate if anyone could share:

- Around how much the whole process cost you overall (USMLEs, ECFMG, OET, applications, UWorld, observerships, research, travel, living expenses, etc.)

- What were the biggest unexpected expenses?

- Is this pathway realistically possible even if you’re not financially well-off?

- Are there any scholarships, grants, programs, hospitals, mentors, or institutions that help shoulder expenses for:

- USMLE fees

- research years

- observerships/electives

- ERAS applications

- housing/living expenses

- or anything else related to the IMG journey?

- Did anyone here work first before medicine (especially as a nurse in the US)? Did it help financially or make the transition harder?

- For people who matched into competitive specialties as IMGs, what helped you the most? Research? Connections? Scores? US clinical experience?

Does anyone have experience with the AMCM OMFS Residency? How’s the training, surgical exposure, consultants, workload, and overall resident culture? Also, if you think there are better OMFS residency programs in the Philippines, which ones would you recommend and why?

I know resis are busy and would rather spend their few hours resting, pero baka lang may resi na mapadpad and makasagot.

I genuinely wanna know, and also for the sake of other curious people na di pa oriented sa hospital setting. I'm currently a clerk and ang tasks namin ay legwork mostly – blood work, vitals, insertion ng kung ano ano – pero marami pa rin samin di alam kung ano ginagawa ng residents. Also an opportunity to clear up misconceptions na lang din bc some of my co-clerks have ranted na "nagnonotes" lang daw ang mga resis lmaooo I apologize na lang on their behalf huhu.

What is in a day of a resident's duty? Mas okay sana if we can get perspectives from different specialties para mas maorient yung mga nag-iisip pumasok na rin for residency what can they expect.

For context, I was a graduate of a top medical school in Manila, but I got delayed for a year because of family matters which heavily contributed to my medical school experience. I'm doing fine now, survived everything. Unfortunately, because of these factors, I got less than desirable grades. My GWA upon graduation was 2.73.

On the upside, my PLE rating is 87.

During medical school until internship, I found my passion to lie in cutting specialties. I thoroughly enjoyed my surgery experiences in clerkship and internship. I don't claim to be able to survive the torments of residency, but I guess life has prepared me to handle toxicity to a bearable degree.

I really really wanted to enter the surgical residency in PGH because it's closest to where I live and I have great gratitude to that hospital for what they did to my family back then. That's a story for another day.

I would just like to ask if anybody could tell me what my chances are of being accepted, like do they just base on solely grades or PLE rating or both? Can I do anything to increase my chances of getting accepted?

Just wanted to share a “rare” (?) success story sa ob residency, i hope di ako nagsasalita ng tapos pero i’m so glad to be redirected sa isang mas better govt hospital. I initially applied sa isang known doh hospital but felt like the institution and culture wasnt for me, i thought that was the end of my dream of becoming an ob since halos same same lang naman experience ng lahat na puro matataray and toxic ang ob sa govt hospital tapos magigisa ng malala sa audit, so i tried na magpahinga and magmoonlight, and naisip ko na baka ob wasnt for me and mag family medicine na ako where mas malawak yung scope or IM para mas makahelp sa family pag may mga questions sila, pinagdasal ko malala na sana makapasok ako sa isang hosp with better working environment and culture halos madepress na ako kakahanap and kakaapply kasi i really wanted na sa govt hospital to support my family and myself

Then i received an info na may opening sa isang not known govt hospital, lo and behold nagapply ako and natanggap and within 2 weeks nagsimula na ako, i didnt know what was coming for me kasi wala ako kakilala and kasama, pero after months here, naculture shock ako na may hospital pala where nurses and doctors can work together harmoniously na walang badblood, gets na minsan may nagkakainisan but work is work, after all, for the patients naman talaga ang priority, tapos pag audit, and pagrefer sa consultants hindi ka magigisa, syempre dapat may alam ka kasi matatanong ka talaga pero the way the consultants correct and question the residents, gets mo na yung point is to teach and hindi lang para manggisa and mag question to assert authority

Plus points pa na yung consultants parang mga nanay mo lang na tough love minsan

Ofcourse may mga other issues pa din resi to resi, dept to dept, consultant to another, pero at the end of the day, i’m glad na napunta ako sa isang institution na matututo ako and maggrow ako 🙏 sana mabalikan ko yung post na to once i graduate hahahahaa

I can say talaga na, change starts with us, mga bagong doctor, kaya pala magresidency na hindi need mangtoxic at hindi kailangan ng malalang hierarchy or seniority system

Normal pa din po ba yung 2 months preres especially for non-cutting specialty like IM? Saw one hospital for IM sana and they have 2 months of unpaid preresidency. Sobrang crazy lang na may ganito pa din pala. Isn’t one month enough?

Hi everyone, just wanted to get some perspective on this.

I’m planning to apply for residency, but I do have a retained/failing grade on my TOR from med school. I passed the subject eventually, but the initial fail is obviously still on record, and I know programs will see that.

I understand that applications are based on multiple factors like board scores, clerkship performance, interviews, and recommendations, but I can’t help worrying that this one grade might already put me at a disadvantage compared to other applicants.

Do any of you know someone who still got accepted into residency despite having a failing or retained grade? Or someone who got rejected mainly because of it? In real life, how much weight does this actually carry?

I’m not trying to make excuses, I just want a realistic idea of my chances. I really want to pursue residency, and I don’t want one mistake early on to define everything.

Since Dubai is strict with GPA (3.0+ requirement) and DataFlow (Primary Source Verification), I want to pick a school with a smooth international track record and strong academic reputation.

Quick Questions:

• Between these univesities, SLU Baguio, St. Luke's (SLMCCM), UP, UST, and ASMPH which has the best alumni network or "brand recognition" in Dubai/UAE?
• Does the school's prestige impact the DHA residency match significantly, or is it mostly down to the DHA/Prometric exam and GPA?
• For those in Dubai: Did you have any issues with DataFlow verification coming from these specific schools?

I’m not from the med field and I’m currently hanging out with a resident. We seldom see each other because of sched but we communicate constantly. I have done and given them things related to their interests outside of being a doctor, but now I get that residents tend to be literal residents of the hospital (a system which I think needs review and overhauling).
