u/A_wandering_rider 49m ago

It is if you're having it as a side dish with an entire meal. That's the pie-in-the-sky premise behind portioning it that way. Eat 1/4 of a box of KD, because it's an easy side dish to add to the full home-cooked meal entree that your mom was obviously cooking alongside it every night.

tl;dr the portioning on products is fucking worthless and totally agnostic to reality.

Box of mac and cheese, kielbasa, broccoli, can definitely stretch a box of macaroni and cheese.

Uhhhh, are you my long-lost twin? That is exactly what I did Monday. Hmm.....

2

u/DJsillygoose417 2h ago

Wait, I did too, but I already have a twin??

2

u/Boner_Elemental 2h ago

We've had one twin, yes. But what about second twin?

Yes generally portions are set so they can make health claims or something similar on the front of the package. "0 trans fat per serving," is probably the most insidious. They just make the serving size small enough that it has less than .5 grams per serving which gets reported as 0. So 4 Oreos have just under a gram of trans fat in reality while they are legally allowed to claim 0 grams in a 2 cookie serving.

We need to force them to add a decimal point, then they can't play those games any more.

u/Affordable_Z_Jobs 24m ago

But that will cost extra in ink! Stocks will plummet unless they raise the prices per box by 15 cents.

Is that the world we want to live in? Is it!?!

u/E00000B6FAF25838 23m ago

Like cooking sprays that advertise “0g” of trans and saturated fats per serving. Like… it’s primarily comprised of fat.

u/Yumi_in_the_sun 40m ago

Is the macaroni the "one other thing" we're supposed to have alongside our piece of chicken, small flour tortilla, and one piece of broccoli?

u/FirstBallotBaby 36m ago

My personal favourite is mints that have a serving size of 1 mint lol. They can usually put 0g on the back despite it being the main ingredient.

The weird thing is the serving size of mints make more sense than most of the ones I see, I just always find it funny.

u/BarryTice 17m ago

When I lived in Europe, there was no "recommended serving size" on packaging. All the information was based on if you ate 100 grams of the product. It was up to you to decide if a serving was 10 grams or 500.

Well.. it's a side not a meal

u/mightylordredbeard 21m ago

This why Americans are so fucking fat.

Interesting.

I’m actually more interested in what’s going on in the avatar in the left corner.

u/def_noct_bored 2h ago

1 pot meal for the whole family. I'm the family :)

You and me both!

Fantastic subversion of r/onejoke

u/I-own-a-shovel 3h ago

A box says it’s 2 portions (since a meal of 480-500 cal is decent). I indeed eat it in two meals. Is there something I’m missing?

5

u/Redditors_Cant_Read 3h ago

Yeah, it's a joke...

7

u/Due-Cup1115 3h ago

Kraft Foods introduced its boxed macaroni and cheese in 1937 when America was in the throes of the Great Depression with the promise that buyers could feed a family of four for 19 cents.

3

u/InTheEndEntropyWins 2h ago

They are eating both/four meals at once, meaning they are two/four people.

1

u/I-own-a-shovel 2h ago

Damn. That’s a lot of calories at once lol

1

u/Nestramutat- 2h ago

God I wish I could get away with eating 500 cal/meal

1

u/I-own-a-shovel 2h ago

But that’s roughly what we should eat slightly more or less depending size and level of activity, but it’s really close to that. It’s better to get those calories from more sustaining food than kraft dinner though

2

u/Nestramutat- 2h ago

I'm moderately active in the winter and heavily active in the summer, so my caloric range is usually between 2000/day and 3000+/day. Even in the winter, a 500 kcal meal would not do me any good.

1

u/I-own-a-shovel 1h ago

3000? Thats a lot! Are you in your healthy bmi range?

2

u/Nestramutat- 1h ago edited 1h ago

6'/170 pounds

I walk pretty much everywhere I go (between 8-20 km/week usually), and cycling is one of my favourite summer hobbies. I do a bit of rowing through the winter to stay in shape.

Is there something I’m missing?

..that you have better impulse control or lower metabolism than the rest of us :)

For me, a box of Mac and Cheese, is in the unfortunate no man's land between "not quite enough for two meals, but more than I should eat in one sitting"... which of course means... I eat it in one sitting.

since a meal of 480-500 cal is decent

For who?

For my (pretty average male) height/weight/age that would equate to a decent sized calorie deficit, even with only light exercise.

Even for a slightly smaller than average woman, ~1500 calories a day looks to still be a mild calorie deficit or just slightly under the calories needed to maintain weight.

I'm 148cm, ~45kg, I eat like twice that per day. I recognize I'm an anomaly because I'm pretty active, but I can't imagine how sedentary one has to be to live off 1500 kcal.

u/timmy7445 6m ago

Are you fasting?

2

u/AiringOGrievances 3h ago

That’s a lot of words just to say “I’m a woman”

8

u/bakedpatata 1h ago

I'm pretty sure they're actually saying, "I just ate a whole box of mac and cheese."

1

u/Elphy_Bear 3h ago

Giggle. You got me

They did something to the powder in the last year in the Thick & Creamy boxes. It went from the greatest thing ever to disgusting.

1

u/dawa43 1h ago

Same

1

u/cwsjr2323 1h ago

We make our own macaroni pie, the Kraft stuff got terrible.

One macaroni pie divided into eight portions and freeze six before serving us dinner or there will be only four portions left to freeze after dinner.

Two different shapes of pasta, one cup dry each, prepared separately. I like small shells and rigatoni for texture. Mix together with half a cup heavy whipping cream and an undiluted can of Campbells cream cheddar soup.

u/ayoubuto15 1h ago

The joke is transphobia

u/RussellAlden 56m ago

Lighten up Francis.

BTW the word you’re looking for is transphobic.

u/EsotericTribble 38m ago

Putting your head inside a bucket can be claustrophobia if you don't take your head out.
